Narrative Background

Open if you wish...:

The sun is so bright today! It feels a little warm, at least warmer than the super cold wind. I wonder if Elissa is able to come out and play in the snow today? A small girl, hair the color of burnished copper ran out of the sturdy wooden house and across the frozen dirt. She skidded to a halt in front of another heavy hide door covering.

'Lissa! Let's go play in the snow! It's so pretty out! Looks like a bunch of sparkly jewels all across the ground!

Another small girl, bundled up in the furs of a northern fox came running out of the building, a smile plastered across her face.

Mea! Let's go! she screams as the pair runs out past the boundaries of the village.

They threw snowballs and tumbled into the powder, making angels. As the sun started to set, the howl of a wolf in the distance snapped their attention back to the present.

We have to go 'Lissa, I'm scared! We should get home now!

Nooo Mea! I wanna stay out here and keep playing. The stars will be out soon, they are even prettier than the snow!

Stars out? If we're out when the stars come out, we're gonna get eaten by that wolf!

They argued for another few minutes, the disagreement bringing Imealla to tears. When she finally broke, and began bawling, Elissa started to scream. Imealla opened her eyes and blinked the tears out.

Why is it so bright out? The sun is going down? Why.....

Her thoughts were interrupted by 'Lissa's continued screaming. Across the snowfields she saw a handful of adults running across the field.

Her head is on fire! Save her!

********************

Imealla sat up in a sweat. Her room was dark and the only sound was that of her heart thudding in her ears. Closing her eyes, a soft light slowly filled the room as her halo swirled into existence around her head.

Why would I think of 'Lissa after all these years? I haven't thought about that day in - how long has it been? Not since before I came to Absalom at least.

Ten Minute Background

Elements:

1. Grew up south of Hoarwood Forest, in a nameless village. Her parents appeared to be standard human stock.
2. When she was about 16, she met a wandering Sarenite priest that introduced her to the glory of worshipping Sarenrae. She left home to travel with him for some years on his pilgrimage.
3. Found her entire clan slaughtered when she returned to visit her family.
4. Decided to abandon the frosty Northlands with the priest at 24 years old. The priest took her to Absalom to get more training at a Sarenite shrine.
5. Considers herself the arm of Sarenrae. Believes that many of Sarenrae's clergy fail to measure up to the ideal of the Dawnflower.

Goals:

1. Eradicate the white witches that slaughtered her family.
2. I would love for her to find out exactly how she came to be Aasimar. The was only ever told it was the blessing of the gods shining on her family.

Secrets:

1. In her quietest moments, her most intimate times, she honestly questions if her ability to wield magic is any different from the witches she hates so much. She refuses to breath a word of this outside of her mind and does her very best to keep even the thought of it hidden around other people.
2. She was meant to die in the attack on her family. It was a matter of misinformation that kept her alive. The white witches could not abide the presence of an aasimar in their domain. She is totally unaware of this fact and she's never considered it a possibility.

People:

1. Father Eryck Smythely - Sarenite priest that acted as a mentor and confessor to her. He has retired from his wandering missionary work and has settled in to his dotage as a professor in Absalom.
2. Underpriest Sandara Quinn - A lower ranking cleric in worship to Sarenrae. She and Imealla studied together. What started as a friendly competition turned foul when Sandara found out about Imealla's view that many of the clergy were not serving Sarenrae in their fullest.
3. Gwynne Blueglass - Halfling proprietor of "The Blue Moon", a small tavern on the road between Absalom and Diobel. She took to visiting the tavern during her extended stay in Absalom. She considers Gwynne her closest friend outside the church. She's blessed the arrival of two of Gwynne's children.

Memories, Mannerisms, Quirks:

1. As a child, the first time her halo presented itself she scared a playmate that thought her hair was on fire.
2. She, uncommonly, offers direct prayer to Sarenrae both at sunup and sundown. Typically, clergy in worship of Sarenrae will only pray directly while the sun rises.
3. When she found the bodies of her parents, she was devastated and her connection to Sarenrae was nearly broken. The only shining light that kept her on the path was the counsel of Father Eryck. It was his words and actions that brought her face back to the light.
