Background:
Ilya was born in a village ten-days’ ride from Whitethrone. Once every five years a cold sister would visit and select one child to be taken away and eaten. Her selection methods bordered the perverse, as she would sniff, lick, and squeeze each child in turn before selecting the one she wanted. On the day she selected Ilya, there was not much deciding to do. His bestial features betrayed his celestial heritage, in particular his rather large rabbit like ears and she took him kicking and screaming back to her hut. Instead of eating him, the sister chose to make him an apprentice, citing his long life and meek nature as reason enough to suspect he that he would be useful; Though sometimes she would torment him by saying she thought rabbit meat was sounding tasty. Despite her torment, which would sometimes send him into stuttering fits that invited her to torment him even more, Ilya grew to be an exceptional apprentice. Under the treat of cannibalism, he never felt he had any choice other than to be a great apprentice. She never once taught him a spell, or a hex, or even let him have a friend to serve as his familiar. She would often burn his books, beat him if he even looked like he was casting a spell, and cook his animal friends just in case they were intelligent enough to be familiars (there was a crab in particular that had Ilya falling into crying fits for months afterwards). One day, while gathering firewood, Ilya was ambushed by witch hunters and kidnapped. Under the threat of violence they forced him to tell them everything he knew about his mistress. The they bound him and took him with them back to her hut where he watched as they dragged her out, killed her, and burned her body. They then unbound Ilya and left him there in the ruins of what had been his life for the better part of sixty years (he was four when she took him, and had not grown up much since due to his celestial heritage). Not really knowing what to do he set about cleaning up his former home and burying his mistress who, despite her cruelty, was still the only family he had known all these years. He went back to the village he was taken from and told the townsfolk that the witch was dead, and that their children were safe but was rebuked by them, for he had been the only child that lived, and they knew he was the crone’s apprentice. Ilya swallowed his hurt and moved on, knowing that they hated him only through association, and it was the Jadwiga who were to blame for this. As he left his former home behind, intent on wasting away in the wilds of Irrisen, a young tiger appeared before him one night. With steely blue eyes that hid its intent and magnificent white fur that glowed in the moonlight, it stalked toward Ilya. However, Ilya wasn’t scared. When he saw the tiger he felt something other than fear, he felt love. It was a strange feeling to go with a strange encounter. As he moved to touch the tiger it backed away and started walking in another direction, south, away from the center of Irrisen. The tiger’s tail was covered in moths, which was coincidental, because they matched the butterflies that had fluttered into Ilya’s stomach Near death and emaciated, he found himself in Heldren. It was a miracle that he had been able to leave Irrisen, and an act of god that he made it as far as Heldren. The people of the town were as accepting of him as they could be to such a haggard looking boy with rabbit ears, and treated him as if he had been born there all along. Within weeks he began living with the family of Menander and Kale Garimos, a local beer crafting family and tavern owners. Going from an apprentice of witchcraft to an apprentice of beer craft was a surprisingly easy transition for Ilya, and his hosts treated him as if he were one of the family without hesitation. His tiger, who by now he’d named Sascha, took up residence in the Borderwood, away from the town; though Ilya visited him regularly. Life slowly became better for the Idyllkin, and it was not long before he felt like he could truly forget his time under the cruel tutelage of the white witch.
Some notes on Ilya:
Ilya is uneasy around arcane spell casters, and is afraid of witches in particular. For most of his young life they were the monsters in the fairy tales, eaters of children, oppressors of the masses, and he was unfortunate enough to serve one. Though his adoptive family are more than loving, he does not feel at home in Heldren. The imp of the perverse often bites him, and he longs for his homeland every day despite his harsh upbringing. He feels like a coward sometimes for running away from Irrisen. It is a strange place he finds himself in, and he often adopts a forlorn visage when left for too long in his own thoughts. Despite this he is friendly and generally well liked by others in the Heldren.
Life in Heldren:
Ilya began his time in Heldren learning the Garimos family trade of beer making. The Root’s brewery has long supplied the Silver Stoat with unique ales and stouts, though the latter has been more in demand lately due to the long winter. A klutz at first, Ilya quickly adapted to the craft thanks in no small part to his many years apprenticed to the cold sister.
