Personality:

Ileum is naive in the ways of the world, most of his interests lie in what he can read from books, holding a high interest in any written history he can get his hands on. He often stops to study his surroundings spending most days as if the time passing by holds no meaning to him.

Description:

Ileum is an average sized elf with long light brown hair, pale white skin, and grey eyes. He appears to be a traveler equipped for a colder region and carries himself as if seeing the world for the first time, stopping in awe to study even the most common things. Although naive, Ileum is skeptical towards what information others may be willing to give being he was fed nothing but tails of the past only to find out things were much different than what he had put together from the stories he had gathered.

Background:

A door of ice, articulately caved with different designs and symbols, stood firmly pinched between two snow-capped mountains. Inside, a channel of connected rooms, elaborately carved out of frozen water, defined the existing world of the Snowcaster elves and Ileum’s place of refuge. The ice carved caverns periodically displayed signs of elven magic that heated and illuminated the ceiling’s edges where minor amounts of water trickled down onto carefully prepared herbal crops.

Inside, hard at work with his study sits a young elf lost in thought. The crown of the world echoed through Ileum’s mind as he recited the metaphor used by his mother (Thessalia) earlier that day. It was an interesting claim about the survival of his race, but one that Ileum had his doubts about. His recollection of the outside world was limited to books and stories that were told to him during his youth. Even his father (Rayleen) had spun a tale or two about some supposed catastrophe that took place a lifetime ago, which he called Earthfall. Over the years Ileum grew tired of the stories and even began to question their sincerity. The only truth he had come to accept was the fact that he and his people where cut off from the rest of the world. That’s assuming anything was even left of it. He had been told by more than one elder that many of their race fled, that isolation in the frigid lands is what insured their survival, and that… well… Bla, bla, bla. With each passing fable, Ileum grew more and more intrigued with the idea of escaping the isolation and seeing the world for himself. Thessalia’s most recent story about being the crown of the world, had him gnawing at the bit.

A day eventually came that seemed different from the rest. All the elders had gathered in one of the side rooms to have a meeting about something of major importance. For the first time in a long time the door had been left unguarded. Ileum knew the significance of the opportunity and was more than prepared to act on it. Without hesitation he quickly gathered his things and headed straight for the door. His mind was racing with thoughts of what may lay beyond that door and what was left to see of the open world. When he approached the unattended door, like many times before, he felt his knees buckle under the strain of the wards that magically protected the portal. Ileum learned years ago to relax his muscles and not strain against the wards. That a relaxed posture would circumvent the magic of the door. Slowly he rose to his feet and calmly walked forward. His heart pounded with every step. His mind rushed with urgency, yet he knew that the process couldn’t be rushed.

For the first time in his life, Ileum made it all the way to the ice covered door. His hands quivered as he pushed up against the barrier with all his might. With each fruitless effort, Ileum’s hopes began to fade. He knew his time was growing short. In a single, last ditch effort, Ileum dropped his backpack and began rummaging through a collection of items that he thought might be of use. During his frantic search, an old amulet that had been given to him by his father, fell out of one of the side satchels. Ileum brought the rustic item more for sentiment than any practical use. Although, he knew time was short, he couldn’t help but stair at the amulet as it clambered to the floor. With a deep sigh, he reached down and took hold of the amulet’s small chain. It was then that he noticed small etched markings, across the surface of the talisman, begin to glow. He watched as the markings began to pulsate with a faint blue aura. At the same time, the door’s larger glyphs began to pulsate with a similar glow. Do to the change in events, Ileum decided to make one last attempt. He pressed his hands firmly against the door and began to push. The door showed no sign of giving, but his hands began to faze through the ice as though it weren’t real. In a flash, the world around Ileum began to spin into a blur. When it subsided, his vision settled on a vastly desolate world of snow and ice. The snow covered hills stretched as fare as the eye could see. The door, that should have been behind him, had now vanished. Stranded and cold, Ileum wrapped the collar of his cloak tightly around his face and then stepped forward into a world of unknown dangers.

Dropped into the harsh environment of the north, Ileum was forced to adapt to the cold weather using what knowledge he had obtained through books and study. Although the weather stayed unchanged, each day seemed to pass a little easier till eventually the cold no longer held much of an effect on Ileum. Finally, after a crash course of learning how to survive without the support of the elders, Ileum’s focus shifted back to what his father had told him about “Earthfall” and the elves that did not stay behind. He recalled a place his father referred to as Kyonin, where the other elves retreated to for sanctuary. Intrigued by the history of his people, Ileum set off in search of the Forest.

Upon arrival, Ileum’s discovered many more of his people had survived and were thriving in a beautiful elven stronghold within the forest of Kyonin. Instead of asking for local rumors, Ileum sought the written history of these elves. He found himself spending much of his time in the library eager to learn the truth of his people. The elves of Kyonin came to know Ileum for his unique skills of archer and herbalism, for he spent his off time taking small requests to gather herbs and passing his teaching on to the younger generations.
