About Hyrin Hammerskôr
Appearance
Some persons turn heads when they enter the room, due to some extreme of appearance. Hyrin is not one of these. She is a young dwarven woman of average height, with a little more cushioning than a human, but not not to the point of obesity. Her dark-red hair is short and practical, tied into half a dozen braids. Her face is friendly and open, and her steel-grey eyes rarely really darken for more than a few fleeting moments.
Her build is strong and stable. Her expression nearly always hale. She prefers to wear bright colors, buttoned shirts and linen clothing for its texture.
Personality
Hyrin is usually somewhat subdued. She tends to try and blend into the crowd, not wanting to stand out too much. She is capable of making herself heard, but if someone else is as qualified to talk, she prefers to stand back. This reluctance is seated in a somewhat low opinion off herself. While not a failure by any objective standard (far from it, in fact), Hyrin holds herself to the measure of heroes of old, and when compared to a tale that has expanded with each telling for sometimes millenia, she can't help falling short.
When angered, Hyrin turns into a seething volcano. Still not one for grand speeches or hasty curses, she instead bottles up her anger, stows it away. If she can solve the issue, that works relatively well, but if irritation piles on irritation, eventually there is an explosion. Not always directed at the most deserving target, though usually not destructive beyond reason - and always followed up by frenzied, shamefaced restitution for those innocently caught in the blast.
She is easy to be around, not one to offend or make enemies. On the other side, she is also not easy to befriend, or become romantically linked with. She keeps her own issues close to her heart, and only her brother Korip (her sole remaining family) can claim some insight into her private thoughts.
Background
Hyrin's family originally made a living as weaponsmiths in Ustlav. Live was not easy, but the suplime craftsmenship of her father, and the tight household run by her mother ensured that the 4 children never lacked anything in their lives. Being the only dwarf family in the town was odd, certainly, but Valkir (her father) insisted it had been the right choice to settle in the town. The family never explained the reason in more detail than "they needed a smith".
Yet when the Tyrant stirred, youth came to an abrupt end. Their village was not swept away by gallowspire's first assault. Instead, it was struck down by a glance. Several vampires who had renegated on their vows to the Whispering Tyrant fled from their former master, and in the turmoil, seized Hyrins former home village. Most of the human inhabitants where slaughtered like cattle, but after one of their spells left her younger sister unharmed, Hyrin's family was rounded up, and passed to the party's Nosferatu. The proto-vampire drained most of their blood, replaced it with alchemical concoctions. Had her oldest brother turned into a vampire to study if the transition retained the property (it did not). Probed her mind, cut and examined every aspect of her being.
In the feavered dreams and waking nightmares, Hyrin felt edging ever closer to some fundamental knowledge about life and death. Even as the Nosferatu continued his experiments, her mind, trying hard to escape the unbearable began to turn to ways normally closed to mortal perception. To the flow of life, and unlife, and how they blasphemously depended on each other. She has never been able to formulate the links she feels in her soul in a half-coherent fashion, but what she glimpsed disinclined her from trying too hard, either.
Salvation came from the most unlikely source. Tar-Baphon's forces finally closed in on the town, to bring the wayward vampires to heel. The spectre tasked with the towns destruction, however, did not do a very throughout job at it. Korip, also delirious and half-dead, nevertheless managed to free Hyrin, and they made their escape, covered by the smoke of the only home they knew burning down.
