Hama, a Varisian woman originally hailing from the nation of Ustalav, fled to the more lawless reaches of Brevoy after facing persecution in her home village as a witch. Before being driven from her old home, she lived a simple life as a much-loved herbalist. Traveling to Brevoy, she chanced across a gang of bandits, who captured her and pressed her into service as their cook and occasional plaything.
Hama kept her magic hidden from her captors for months, fearing they would force her to turn her powers towards their raids. During those hard months, she worked dutifully, slowly earning the bandits’ trust, all the while collecting various toxic ingredients from the surrounding wilds for what would ultimately become her captors’ final meal.
Having freed herself from her captors via mass poisoning, Hama wondered the wilderness for days, slowly wasting away from starvation until she was rescued by a small patrol of Brevoy lawmen. While attempting to explain how she had become lost in the wilderness, the lawmen arrested her as a “confessed bandit.” She once again found herself a captive to dangerous men. Hoping to use their newfound prisoner as a means of professional advancement, the lawmen had her tried and convicted under false pretenses, using the ever-looming threat of hanging to leverage her for information on other brigand groups that her former captors had occasional dealings with.
Because of various deals that had been made during her trial, she soon found herself pressed into service yet again, this time on an expedition into the southern region of wilderness that she had just escaped from: “the Stolen Lands,” a foreboding area of unclaimed country infested with lawless men, deadly monsters, and treacherous hazards. Her task was simple: help the expedition to re-open the old trade routes along the rivers and scatter or defeat the bandits who have made them too dangerous to use. Only when this task has been accomplished will she finally be free from both the law and the lawless to do as she wishes. Having continued to conceal her magic from most of those around her, Hama primarily serves her new companions as chef, as expedition quartermaster, and as an occasional advisor on matters concerning the local bandits.
