Hey gang. I hate to say it but I'm really struggling to keep up on this thread. The game is awesome and I love Hal. He's a really challenging character personality (and I got to incorporate my RL ridgey into the game too). The team is great too with some really unique character concepts! But between the 3 RL & Roll20 games I'm running, a podcast and video editing (not to mention the day job going 10 hrs per day latley) I'm going to have to step away for the time being. Please feel free to bot Hal'dorel and Inceku, I'll leave his character profile alone so you can know his stats.

Good luck, everyone!

Sorry game, I thought I had posted up a notice that I was going to be out of pocket for the next few days. I'll catch up here, and do my best to post something this afternoon or tomorrow morning. I'm sure we can get into trouble all the boss is out of town having fun!

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 + 2 = 19 Zilcher

Hal watches as the human and his lackeys depart. He feels anger boiling beneath the surface, seeing years scum Zilcher leave behind such a challenge to the authority within the Goblin's walls as though it means nothing. Humans, roaming their respective territories and pissing on the ground. No better than dogs... He glances down at Inceku, the Ridgeback meeting his eyes. "No offense." Hal mutters in elvish.

He rises smoothly from his seat, bow now at his side as he slips the two blunt arrows back into his quiver. He steps to the balcony railing and glares down at the gathered gamblers and pathetic hangers on. I shall show you territorial pissings... Hal'dorel brushes a tankard of half drank ale from the railing, letting it crash to the floor below and drawing attention to himself. "Hear me well! Knowledge, gold, merchandise...stealing is stealing. And you'll be held accountable." He sweeps a finger across the casino. "Ask around and see how far you'll get after stealing from here! Ask how far you'll get before I find you and put a f+!&ing arrow in your head!!" Hal places his hands on the railing and concludes. "Then we'll see how far 5 gold goes towards paying the rats to eat your sorry carcass."

Intimidate: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 (26 vs humans in room)

The wild look in Hal's eyes spills over the crowd as he withdraws from the rail and resumes his seat. In his rage he barely notices that Inceku is next to him growling low to match his master's mood.

By the dark pits of my soul I hate this place. I want it to burn...I need it to burn for its inequity...

The elf begins searching his memory for word on this Mardebo fool serving Zilcher. Perhaps Hal'dorel would go on the offensive and take away some comfort on the man's part.

Not moving from his position, Hal glances about for Krucina. While he can see the others, she'd disappeared from view. But she's either hidden or nowhere near the floor. A silent curse and he resumes his study of Zilcher and his bodyguards. The half-breed savage will be the most dangerous up close. But the other...I don't like unknown quantities.

As Nessa cozies up to Zilcher, Hal begins running down strategies in his mind...

Hal'dorel keeps himself as still as possible, seated in his customary chair, longbow across his lap. Inceku looks up from where he is curled up by the upper room fire but Hal simply shakes his head. He slips a pair of blunt arrows from his quiver and lays them alongside the bow and waits. Ok, what are you watching?

Hal eyes the men entering, noting the leader and frowning. When Cameron and Alayna confirm his suspicions, his eyes narrow. Zilcher...

"If it does come to a fight," Hal leans over to Alayna. "...go for Zilcher first. Keep the bodyguards on the defensive."

Hal sees Cameron go tobwarn Saul and turns to inform the others. He winds his way thru the crowd, locking eyes with both Dolgrin then Krucina then nods to the entering trio of Zilcher and Co. Then he heads upstairs to resume his perch on the balcony and watches the trio closely.

Hal'dorel pays the fee for entrance into the library and assists the dwarf with research. His attention is held within the tomes related to the elves. For those books and scrolls he'll dig a bit deeper than see how his people are involved. Could thsee pages detail some of the early exploits of my father's group?

When he notes the woman's attentions, he forces no pretenses in challenging her interest. "What is it, human? Why do you stare?"

Hal's eyes go distant. "Warnings and visions are not given lightly by the gods. You're grandsire and now you choose the path of wisdom versus ignorance." The elf nods appreciation, the dwarf's estimation in his eyes ratcheting upwards. "Very well." He motions for Dolgrin to lead the way and gives his hip a pat to summon Inceku to his side.

A look back to Krucina and he nods for her to join them. "Your days and nights spent skulking thru the shadows for survival are over. Now you set your eyes upon something of consequence and merit. Seize it and better your mark on this world. You've already proven your merit to me."

Along the way Hal considers what he knows locally about the Cyphermages. They were a group he'd discounted as meddling fools. Yet fools have a way of stumbling their way to cataclysm...

Inceku growls low as Dolgrin adjusts his grip on his weapon, the Ridgeback's hackles rising. The dog's ire may he's that of his master as Hal'dorel's eyes narrow in suspicion. "My kind...?" He chokes down the string of elfish invective that springs to mind and rests a hand on Inceku's shoulder. He glances around to ensure they are not being observed, gesturing for Krucina to step closer so they can share words in private with the dwarf and begins, "I am in this light-cursed city under similar purpose. I would just assume this Blot consume the lot of them. But if that should come to pass, what's to say this phenomenon doesn't turn it's malevolence towards my homeland."

Hal folds his arms across his chest. "I've been here for 3 months, gathering what information I could, but these fools no less than nothing. They just continue to languish in their slothful repose, blind. I think they'd continue their self destruction even as the town burned around their heads."

"All I know is that our borders to the north are...restless. I am here to cast fresh eyes on the situation and see if this place is involved. Or perhaps these cyphermages have delved too deeply into matters they do not understand nor is their business." He juts his chin towards Dolgrin. "What is it your grandfather has revealed. What are these fiends of which you speak?"

After seeking rest in the balcony above the game room, Hal leaves the planning for the Golden Goblin to the rest of the group. Efforts to find ways for the fools of this city to waste away their futures on idle games of chance only emphasizes his desire to see Riddleport burn. He let's a small smile touch the corner of his mouth at the amusement of those who cannot help but seek their own destruction.

But as he angles fir the stairs to leave the establishment there is a twist in the back of his elvish mind akin to concern for the party. It is something he's not felt in a long time. Not since his time scouting with Fir'umil and the others along the north of Arsmeril. "There is a camaraderie amongst those that shed blood for survival. Then there is the blood shed on the hunt. Sometimes the bonds formed by one are stronger than the other, for one tests trustworthiness more." Hal'dorel's father's words in his ears. Spoken after their first hunt for the Brethren.

Inceku presses his wet nose against Hal's palm, bringing him back to the here and now. "Yes, time to go."

To his right, the door to his modest quarters opens to reveal Krucina. Hal'dorel inclines his head once in greeting. But Inceku pads over to her and offers a few licks if she's willing to accept them. Hal studies the behavior, brown eyes narrowed. "I'm leveraging the day we have to ourselves to gather rumors on the Blot shading this rat hole. And perhaps any other idiots who would interfere in the operation of this...establishment." He shoulders his gear and checks the sword at his hip. "You are welcome to come along if you wish. Or you can aid the others in their efforts."

Hal doesn't wait for a response, heading for the stairs down into the common room. As he passes the group in their planning, he extends the same invitation and then he exits the tavern

Outside he spots the dwarvish warrior and wonders at his destination. "Dolgrin, the preparations for the fools of this town do not entice you? "

Just seeing if there's opportunity to investigate with Dolgrin. Or do some other sleuthing?

Hal is pretty much done with the conversation on the kid. He'd state his opinion and let it drop, leaving it to the humans and Nessa to decide on the human pup. He'll be happy to introduce them to the priest Bartleby if Eschie is ok with a randomly generated, friendly MacGuffin to get the kid safely away. But I'm thinking - ooc - Sylee is a great development tool for Nessa's pc.

For Hal, he's at a point that he's really questioning why he's in Riddleport at all. So he'd assist Cameron in finding Milon, because the elf gave his word he would do so. But then he'd start looking into the Blot above the city. Perhaps get info back to Asmeril on what he uncovers in the hopes that the Blot is why he was ensconced in Riddleport.

As for the Golden Goblin, he'll continue to aid in security, being more visual now and working closely with Krucina on using her stealth abilities to surveil the floor. Perhaps more a intimidating presence that includes Dolgrin and Alayna will promote safety in the gaming room. Lastly, Hal can work his street contacts to spread the word that you don't mess with the Goblin, or you end up penniless and half your crew in body bags.

Hideout:

..

Hal puts away his manacles and nods to the door. "You should return home. The blot in the sky tells me our brethren will have more need of your bow than this human pet of yours." He pulls a scrap of paper and scrawls basic instructions for the return to the Meirani. The path would lead him thru elvish scout pickets in case this Garspheal was a human sympathizer. (paranoid trait, yup)

"Return now. Leave this place behind and return your loyalties to your own kind where they belong."

With that, Hal'dorel inclines his head once and departs.

Totally cool with that, Eschie. The big part of his history is his father being a militant with the Lantern Bearers, something Hal is unaware of do obvious reasons. But his uprising engendered two big things: a militaristic point if view, and a paranoid nature. It'll eventually come out that Hal (and his father's Cadre worship an ancient empyreal lord. Hence Hal's distaste for the frivolity of Calistra.

----------------

At the Golden Goblin

Hal'dorel looks at the door through which Nessa and Sylee had disappeared. Then he looks to Alayna to respond. "You humans are peculiar when it comes to the treatment of your younglings. Some cast them aside like you do the years of your short lives while others engender great care, knowing that your longevity comes from your progeny." The elf folds his arms across his chest. "The expedient course would be to turn her over to Father Bartleby. Though I know little of demonspawn, I should think they are less likely to change their natures than you humans. But the injection of a child in on that equation may turn Nessa from her self-indulgent behavior."

At the Hideout:
Hal remains silent thru the elf's explanation. Why would you leave the homeland willingly? He narrows his eyes and says, (Elvish): "Have you been so long from your homeland you've forgot all decorum? I have given you my name? From where do you hail?"

Once the name is given...

"If it is your choice to stay on and repay this human for his...uhm, generosity...may I ask why? What sort is he?"

Hal's curiosity of Beltias is piqued to say the least. That, and what drove this elf to such explorations far from home.

-----------

At the Golden Goblin

Hal watches as Nessa and Sylee head upstairs. At his core, the elf feels a modicum of concern for the child. It's what motivated him to give coin to the sodden cleric ealrier. So it's his nature to think a child under the care of a demonspawn would eventually produce another human of less than desirable qualities.

"Father Bartleby will be in port next week, should you wish better than this squalid city for the child." Hal'dorel calls up after Nessa. His tone is flat, informational and devoid of judgment.

He pushes it aside and rests am hand upon Inceku's shoulder and feeds him a bit of dried meat. "We should seek our rest and prepare for the evening's folly. More desperate fools will be seeking to lose what meager possessions they hold." the elf looks to those in the group, even the dwarf, and nods once. "You've proven yourselves competent combatants when afield. The hunt was a success."

"Krucina, if you are in need of quarter, you may have use of my room. Take your rest. We can discuss your new job here at this wondrous establishment later." He points upstairs to the doorway leading to his small quarters. "I have business to attend to elsewhere."

Before he leaves, he asks Cameron, "What is your next step in finding Milon?"

DM Eschie:

A quick note on Hal, if you read his back story in my character profile, he's in Riddleport as a "spy" of sorts for his home town. He doesn't know too much of the threat of nearby Celwynvian, just that he's being groomed as one of the warrior caste in Arsmeril to keep watch on the ruined city.

While in Riddleport Hal has been sending/receiving instructions from an unknown elvish contact from Arsmeril. When I reference above that he's "seeing to some business", Hal is going to deliver his report and see if there's a message from home.

Let me know if this backstory stuff still works or if you want some tweaking done to it.

Getting caught up...

DM Eschie: Back at the Hideout:

Wasn't sure if you wanted to roll with a quick convo between the elves...glad to dig a bit here, though...

Hal leaves the remaining discussions of chips and wayward human children to the others, taking the opportunity to pull the elf aside. He takes care to walk him to another room, the clean one belonging to Beltias. (In elvish): "I am Hal'dorel Osseus. It was I who felled you from the window, affording you the grace shared by our kind in times of battle." He leads the other elf into the room and seats him in an available spot and pulls the hood from his eyes."[/smaller][/b]

From his pack, Hal withdraws a cloth wrapped square and unwrap it for his prisoner to view. Inside is a portion of elvish bread. "It's been long since my feet tread upon proper earth, but not so long I've forgotten decorum."

The breaking of bread in privacy is an old custom from his home. This version of such along with his accent in elvish would easily mark Hal as being from the cliffside village of Arsmeril that stands as a watch tower of sorts, keeping careful eye on the ruins of Celwynvian.

He seats himself opposite the elf, eyes dipping to see the manacles binding his wrists behind his back. Hal makes as though to release him, but pauses. "Tell me, how has this one found himself in the service of a charlatan and a thief? The association and apparent loyalty is...intriguing. It makes me wonder if there is more to this Beltias than meets the eye. Something more that could put one of the eldar into his service."

-----------------------

In the Golden Goblin

Hal watches Saul turn and close the door behind him. Humans. Never satisfied. To Felder Hal adds, "You can tell him word will get out that those who rob this establishment will be held to a account. This Beltias has lost half his men in the attempted robbery."

He crosses his arms and frowns down at his feet. Why should I care for that human's reputation? How does my employ here differ from...? When does my higher cause for serving this lout make itself known?

The sound of Inceku licking the feet of Nessa's new ward draws his attention. Hal forces his lip to not curl into a sneer. A demonspawn prostitute giving affections and protections to a human whelp? Hmmm, could the child turn Nessa away from her nature? Or will she just plunge this little one into the same darkness?

"Fifty gold. It could go towards sending the little one to Magnimar." Hal shrugs and continues. "A bard in the Publican House once hired me to protect a Sarenrae cleric who travels here to seek younglings for the church. This cleric, Bartleby, he grew up an orphan in Riddleport."

He let's it lay.

Hal'dorel's shadow crosses the doorway as they discuss the spoils of their little raid. He moves into the room and moves around the bodies to pull his arrows. "He seems a clever sort," he adds, plucking an arrow from the half-orc and casting it aside after a disgusted sniff. "I'm sure he can replace what's been lost here."

He rises and wipes his hands together. "And I'm sure he has more sense than to lie to us." the ranger looks straight at Beltias, referencing the info provided about Millon. "He knows that if his words prove false, I'll track him down like the vermin he is and put an arrow in his eye. In fact..." Hal pulls a fresh arrow from his quiver and taps it against his thigh. "...perhaps no loose ends is a better message than letting this one go."

One less human to trouble me. This lot are so passionate about their revenge... To remove him would be practical.

He eyes the symbol hanging about the man's neck. "The Dawnflower you say?" The tip of his long sword comes up, hooking on the string looped through the symbol.and raising it up so the lantern light shines upon it. "Your goddess casts long shadows in this cursed city when she should be burning out the wretches with her holy fire." Hal'dorel's eyes go from the symbol hanging in the air then back to the sodden drunkard. "Do you think her Everlight shines down upon you as you spend coin for wine instead of these destitute children of yours?" He let's the necklace fall but never let's his gaze slip from the man. "See to it you visit some remainder of that drunken human brain of yours before renting to this sort. And see to it every spare coin aside from what buys you food and water finds its way into the coffers. Or I'll come back here and flay your body and leave it in the sun for your goddess to burn away."

Human swine. Vermin. Even given the charge of caretaker for their younglings, they can't scrap together the spine to do that right.

Hal'dorel steps back and sheaths his blade, fishing out a pair of gold coins and tossing them on the bed. "For the children." He nods for Krucina to leave the room. "There's more where that came from should you suddenly recognize Beltias for us. He is a renter here, a human who hides behind disguises and is leader to the rabble in the other rooms. You have a few minutes to decide if your memory is worth anything."

He follows Krucina out into the hall and goes to the room with the prisoners.

If we want to speed it along, I don't want to hold up the pacing. My goal at this point is to get the chips to complete our mission. But if we want, I'd like to get a piece of clothing or personal item of Beltias' and see if Inceku can pick up his scent.

My last thing would be to pull the manacled elf aside and find out what sort of person he is and why he's working for a thieving human.

@Eschie: Yeah, and with double 20s odds are I'd have split his head open with a blunt arrow.

"Clear your head, human. And tame your tongue," Hal slips his arrow back into the quiver and draws his longsword. "Consider your next words carefully, for they can set you free, or end the book of your wretched life."

He shoulders his bow and works his shoulders. "I want your identify the room in which Beltias stayed. Then I want you to provide an object in that room personal to him. Lastly I want the names of every member of this crew." There is no move towards the filthy human, just the menace and purpose in Hal's stance. Hal is standing outside the half-breed's room, eyes studying the circle on the floor and the boxes on the shelf. His cheek twitches minutely. What sort of filthy dark arts were you up to here? When Krucina taps him on the shoulder his grip on his long sword tightens, but the odd perfume cloying subtly around her rinds the elf who is behind him. Stay focused fool. You're lucky it wasn't a knife blade announcing itself in your back.

A simple jut of his chin indicates for Krucina to lead on. Hal's eyes longer on the half-orc's room for a few beats the he turns to follow her.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13 (north room)

Hal knocks a Blunt Arrow and posts up outside the doorway, bow drawn. He nods to Krucuna to proceed.

Scum. Filth. Bargaining still as a knife blade dances on their throat. Always seeking to push away accountability for their actions.

His eyes drift to the manacled elf. If this worm's tale is true and you are bound to this sneak-thief Beltias, do I judge you by the laws of my homeland? Brand you a traitor to our kind? Or is there a deeper reason why you bind yourself to this mercurial human?

Hal nods to Krucina and then to Dolgrin. "Let us clear the rest of the level, then bring the dead for this scum to peruse." A glance to Nessa and he says, "Cease your threats. Kill him or bind him with the others. Pointless threats are as empty as those who spout them."

He first goes to the three prisoners and recheck their bonds. As he does so, he pauses at the magic-user and whispers - but loud enough that at least Cameron can hear. "A figure such as Beltias who thrives on subterfuge, would benefit greatly from the use of magic. I wonder if we've already found him?" He let's the words hang in the air then moves into the hallway. (He's got the paranoid trait, of course he'll think this...)

The elf moves thru the hallways and begins checking the rooms, long sword drawn and pointed inward to the room as he opens the door. Before opening, he glances back to ensure Krucina and Dolgrin are ready to rush the entrance.

He'll look to clear the rooms and find any lingerers. Then he'll drag the dead to this prisoner to verify identities.

Hal simply nods at Cameron's suggestion. When the questions start, he moves to the brazier and pulls the branding iron. He stands behind Cameron and waits.

"It would seem our enemies are vanquished," Hal mentions to Krucina. He gives a single nod to the fetchling. "You conducted yourself admirably in the fight. We were able to take advantage of the other's fumbling attempt at an intrusion and get our work done. You didn't lose your head nor make costly mistakes." Another nod of satisfaction. His words are meant as neither compliment to Krucina nor offense to the others, just an elf assessing the situation.

He gestures down the hallway. "I'll collect the spell caster, then we'll have a conversation with the captives."

The elf shoulders his bow and grabs up the remainder of the bindings and the hood from the torture chair. In a few strides he's standing over the unconscious magic user and tying him up and ripping a piece of the man's clothing to make a gag. Lastly the hood goes on. "It will suffice for a wizard hood since we have none." Then he begins dragging him into the torture room.

Along the way he notes Dolgrin and Nessa standing over the surrendered and bloody form of their opponent. In an even tone, the elf proclaims, "Krucina and I have this magic user and two others bound and unconscious in the other room." He looks at the bloodied man, head cocking to the side. "This one would be unnecessary." He leaves it at that and heads I to the torture room with his prisoner.

In the dark room are the instruments of interrogation used by the locals; small scissors, a hammer, a poker in a brasero. There's not much furniture, only a chair against the wall. But there's dried blood beneath it.

Hal'dorel lines up the prisoners, all three bound and gagged. Two humans and an elf. The latter is set apart from the others, Hal will question him.

"Clan Hawkwinter," He calls over his shoulder. "...do you wish to begin questioning them?"

Hal eyes the cowering human once and moves back into the torture room to retrieve the ropes used for binding people to the chair. On the way back he puts a dagger into the half-orc to ensure he's dead. Cursed and mindless filth...

If there's time...

He motions with his bloodied dagger for the surrender-monkey to turn around so he can bind his hands. Then he marches him into the torture room and plops him down next to the unconscious elf. That done, he'll proceed to gag them both and bind their feet too.

"Too many closed doors left." He whispers to Krucina. He inspects the chair and grabs the hood used for covering a victim's eyes. "And there is an unconscious magic user in the hall. We should get him gagged and blinded as soon as possible."

He slips his dagger back into its sheathe after cleaning it of the half-orc's blood. Amid the dog barking and the remaining scuffling, Hal lists for other enemies.

Broadhead is a regular kill-kill arrow. Sorry, should have been more specific. So far, I've only knocked out the elf (and manacled him) and the magic flinger.

I already have two in here to put to the question." He pauses a second and adds. "So your life does not hinge on anything you can offer other than total surrender."

Hal holds position.

Hal nods to Krucina's warning and casts a weather eye to the corner still viewable from his position in the room.

There's not enough time to bring the man into his sights as the half-orc charges down the hallway and into the room. Hal dodges to the side to avoid the onslaught, maneuvering so that brute is between himself and the hidden fetchling.

Hal braces for hand-to-hand combat as the wretch charges thru the door. But Krucina's expert stab with her rapier puts him down. The elvish ranger nods satisfaction and knocks another broadhead arrow, sighting in on the half-orc. Two halves of the most hateful of coins...

His arrow flies true, plunging into the enemy.

Hal hears Alayna's call and holds a hand up to Krucina to hold position within the room. "We have the drop on whomever emerges next if we remain here," he whispers to the fetchling.

When Alayna emerges next, he knocks another arrow, this one a broad head and gives the swashbuckler a swift signal, "Psst," then gestures from within the darkened torture room.

The elf creeps to the doorway enough to poke his head out and look in either direction. With the yapping dog, he's religated to searching the door frames for possible motion beneath them should someone be angling to emerge.

My bet is the latter...

Hal looks about the room, a grim shadow falling upon his face. He looks to the stirring elf on the floor and his hand goes to his hip pouch and produces a set of manacles. Then he gestures to Krucina, making and motion to his eyes then his ears then towards the door. "Lookout,"

Manacles:
Manacles can bind a Medium creature. A manacled creature can use the Escape Artist skill to slip free (DC 30, or DC 35 for masterwork manacles). Breaking the manacles requires a Strength check (DC 26, or DC 28 for masterwork manacles). Manacles have hardness 10 and 10 hit points.

That done, he knocks an arrow and eyes the doorway, listening...

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 (bind elf)
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

If Hal or Krucina hears/sees a baddie, he'll step forward to the doorway and put a blunt arrow into the target. I need to know more about this room. And a human will divulge faster than a fellow eldar.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 (To doorway)
Longbow: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 25 (PBS, +2 if human)
Non-Lethal Damage: 3d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (6, 1, 4) + 3 + 1 = 15

Now I'm just hoping there's a target! If there's not, Hal will use that stealth roll to move into the next room/hall.

To his left, Inceku sits around the corner, head tilted as the Ridgeback studies the downed elf with what could only be amusement. Or judgement in the elf's mind.

He grimaces and then wrinkles a lip, his teeth bared as he decides to give it another go. This time he shoulders his bow, and presses forward to get to the window.
