Background:

Gregek (or Greg as he now likes to be called), started out as a fairly normal pup in the hobgoblin creche that he called home. He grew up and was trained as any bugbear under the command of hobgoblin overlords. He was taught to fight and glory in his power over the weaker races, but deep within him, he felt that this was not right.
His first couple of battles were nothing special, just combat against a rival group of Hobgoblins. He acquitted himself well, but the next battle, prisoners were taken and his commander, not wanting to deal with them, ordered his bugbears to slaughter them. Greg tried, but every time he raised his maul to kill one, a voice kept asking him "what did they do to deserve this? They are helpless..this is WRONG".
Wrong..not a concept that he had come across before. He had been called bad when he did not follow the commands of the hobgoblin commanders, but wrong was new, and different.
The hobgoblins noticed this hesitation, and sensing it was a flaw in the training, sent he back to be beaten until he would obey, however whenever he was presented with a helpless target, he would balk and not kill it.
Finally his overlords decided that he was no good for front line combat, and sent him to a farming prison to act as a guard. It was here that he met the goblin who would change his life.
He noticed the little fellow after a few weeks at his new post. He would slip away at various times of the day, only to reappear a few hours later. Thinking he was shirking his duty, and in truth not wanting him to get in trouble, Greg followed him and discovered he was disappearing into some sort of hole in the ground. Fearing it was trying to tunnel it's was out of the prison, he jumped down to confront the fellow. What happened next changed his life.
The goblin had found an ancient temple. He explained to Greg that it was made by their people in the dim past. That they were not always the savage monsters that so many of his people embraced, but rather an ancient, noble race who protected the weak and helpless. Over the next few months, the goblin would come to him and tell him of all the discoveries he had discovered, as well as relaying his life story. When the letter arrived about his son, he knew the goblin would try to escape, and he also knew that he would go with him.
