The Story Thus Far:
Gavin was a failure in the real world. He was a shrimpy little street urchin routinely beaten and belittled at school; isolated doubly by his poverty and personality. Gavin begrudged the hypocrisy of his tormentors; why should they be looked up to just because they were the spoiled brats of rich businessmen. It wasn’t fair. So he set his sights of payback. First it was little things; taking back some of his lunch money with a little sleight of hand, then bigger projects like stealing homework or changing exam answers. The problem escalated until finally the heist of the year presented itself: SAO. Little Billy Madison and his gang had been talking about it for ages – they had been in the beta and were going to be the kings of the class next year by getting a lead on what was sure to become the game of the year. And so a plot was hatched. Gavin would shadow Billy to the store; once there it would be a simple matter to snatch the game and nerve-gear. Add in Gavin’s secret hiding place in the abandoned construction site outside school and no one would ever be the wiser. He would take it to a nearby internet café (the only good part of his plan), and finally Gavin would play one of this games everyone was going on about, and rise to the top as one of the preeminent players in Sword Art Online. All too soon Gavin would come to regret the efficacy of this plan. From the very first minutes he logged into the game he hated it; the controls were funky, and he had no idea what his character was supposed to do. He tried grouping up with others, but something always seemd off to them, and he was left out. This made killing even the pigs at the entrance of the beginner area seem a heroic feat. Gavin barely managed to scrape by, until one day out of the blue an anonymous poster sent out a play guide Suddenly Gavin understood the class system, and swapped progression to a class more suited to his real world skills. Perhaps it is a relic of his days in the real world or maybe he has yet to hit his full stride, but even in the game Gavin tends to stay behind the first wave of level clearers. Staying two to three levels behind helps his appraisal business; he expends minimal risk himself while remaining relevant enough to help even rawer newbies in their constant search to survive and level up with ever new upgrades. His personal fighting style reflects his solitary questing style; able to remake himself at the flip of a hat to fit into any adventuring party. He has but one goal; survive SAO and amend his actions in the real world. Friends List and Contact Details:
<Alembic> This rather naïve young dilettante came to the aid of the titular character late one evening, when the latter stupidly walked into an ambush. Gavin feels thankful to the flighty yet flamboyant young man, and has agreed to partner with him in an upcoming tournament. <Argus Ironeye> Argus’s sister Malory recruited Gavin into her circle of friends <The Wandering Crusaders>. They spent the early days of the death game learning to play their respective classes; in Gavin’s case this started with how to change out of his. The two lagged far behind the much better prepared beaters of the assault guilds in the leading wave for the first two and a half floors; finally catching up to her older brother Argus. Introductions were made just in time to take down the floor 3 boss together. Several rounds of drinks, and many more bar fights later the two have stayed fast friends. In spite of Argus's many rough edges, he spends more time pulling Gavin out of fires than vice versa. <Eira> Guild Master for the Black Ravens, the two have had very little interaction to date. She has a reputation for being calm under pressure, the strong strategic sense she displays when guiding her guild has caused most people to call her “driven” at best, but Gavin has yet to form a personal opinion. <Malory> Leader of the Guild <The Wandering Crusaders> Malory is Gavin's earliest questing companion, guildie, and Argus's younger sister irl. Nowadays Malory is one of the best tanks around but Gavin has plenty of embarrassing stories from "the good old days." They drifted apart after a certain event traumatized Gavin, leading him to cut ties with many of his remaining friends to strike out on his own. <Mikhail> A self styled knight, the two had little to do with each other until recently. Gavin came into contact with Mikhail on floor 2 while out leveling with <The Wandering Crusaders>. Mallory was off finishing a personal story quest at the time, and the group was having some trouble handling stronger mobs without their tank. Enter Mikhail; while he shares many features in common with other beaters, Mikhail rarely says no to those in need. So when he overheard a group chatting in a bar while on business he was quick to offer his services. The two have had occasional dealings since, all strictly professional. Contact has increased significantly since Gavin left <The Wandering Crusaders>, as they share a desire to rid the game of PKers. Less Commonly Available Background:
The event which lead Gavin to fall back off the front lines was an exploration gone wrong. I guess it would be about midway through clearing floor 4 - Gavin was in a party at the front with a bunch of friends; he had just bought new map data and combat info from a different broker than usual.
At first everything went well; they were making strong headway and taken down a couple larger mobs. Everything went wrong when they got to the cliff. It wasn't on the map. The party stopped and started milling about complaining. They were just about to turn around, when with a shriek an Area boss spawned on top of them. At first no one was quite sure what had happened, there had been no sign that this was a special spawn point and the information listed for this creature did not point out anything strange. It was a trap; the tanks went in when the creature's first line of attacks matched the description from the broker's info, but it quickly became apparent that much of the information was false. After a protracted battle the boss pulled a couple of area attacks, knocking the party up against the cliff face and threatening a wipe. The group pulled back together; starting to fall back in an organized retreat, but at his point a gang of red players jumped out of some caves up the cliff face - rappelling down to cut off their retreat. The result was a disaster. Eleven player deaths, most of them Gavin's close associates; one of the worst single incidents of player fatality following the day of launch. Gavin got away on a single point of HP, somehow sneaking past the respawned mobs all the way back to the city. Thankfully he got there in time to turn in the info broker, but he's never felt satisfied with the result. Since then he's quit the front lines; acting as an information broker partially to prevent repeats, but also as an avenue towards revenge. |
