Background
His family never knew that he was meeting with this orc, who was teaching him how to be a druid, since he sensed the deep wisdom within the boy and thought it an excellent thing to cultivate, mainly because Mako was a chaotic neutral who relished the idea of teaching a dwarf who hated mining and loved nature. Garikai's mother, a normal dwarven woman who never knew what to make of her strange little son, knew only that he was sneaking away to the forest up top, and then sometimes to the harbor where the dwarves would sell their mined wares.
She heard the drow coming up to the surface, or thought she did, and fled with her son through the forest nearby. Whereupon she met someone she had never met before; a half-orc druid who was her little boy's friend and teacher. He had sensed the coming of the drow and was on his way to find and rescue little Garikai, but had arrived too late to help the rest of the dwarves. So, as the drow were sending their evil agents to kill the last survivors, the mother returned to the battle, entrusting her son to the half-orc druid Mako Friendofsharks.
From that day on, Garikai has considered Mako Friendofsharks his father, and has been his devoted son and student. After his graduation as a full urban druid, Mako Friendofsharks told his son that he must go on a vision quest and would be back in a week. But three weeks have passed, and the sharks of the harbor have told Garikai that they are not pleased. They fear their healer and confidant is dead, and so does Garikai. On the advice of a shark whom Mako viewed as a companion, and whom Mako entrusted his adopted dwarvish son to guard as well as she could, Garikai begins the quest to find his missing father. He joined the Scarab Sages because Mako belonged to them. Mako believed that the long lost great beyond was where the jewels the Sacarab Sages sought were hidden, and he was fascinated with the world beyond. It was his only interest outside of the sharks and the tutelage of his beloved adopted son, Garikai.
