Description
Garikai looks like a dwarf, but dresses like a half-orc druid. He wears a necklace made of animal skulls, and wears a green robe. One would almost mistake him for a scary nature spirit were they to see him, which he doesn't mind one bit.

Personality
Garikai doesn't like you. He literally carries a tarot card, The Hermit, and shows it to anyone who tries to speak to him. He's a hit and run healer and protector, who likes to step in and shield someone who is under attack and can't defend themselves, or heal people who he just happens to see. But don't try to talk to him. He only likes half-orcs and druids.

Background
Garikai was just a normal dwarven boy, except that he liked going to the surface and talking to the animals there. Specifically, he was always drawn to the sea. He didn't like stonework and mining. But he did like his visits with old Mr. Mako Friendofsharks, a half-orc druid who lived near a harbor city and relished talking with the ocean's predatory fish.

His family never knew that he was meeting with this orc, who was teaching him how to be a druid, since he sensed the deep wisdom within the boy and thought it an excellent thing to cultivate, mainly because Mako was a chaotic neutral who relished the idea of teaching a dwarf who hated mining and loved nature.

Garikai's mother, a normal dwarven woman who never knew what to make of her strange little son, knew only that he was sneaking away to the forest up top, and then sometimes to the harbor where the dwarves would sell their mined wares.
She didn't know about Mako or the sharks, but she did know that her son knew places to hide in the surface world.
And that was what saved his life, for when the drow came to kill the dwarves for mining too deeply and entering their territory, she took her son and made him lead her to his safe spot. The reason way was because drow had attacked their underground delve and were murdering just about everyone.

She heard the drow coming up to the surface, or thought she did, and fled with her son through the forest nearby. Whereupon she met someone she had never met before; a half-orc druid who was her little boy's friend and teacher. He had sensed the coming of the drow and was on his way to find and rescue little Garikai, but had arrived too late to help the rest of the dwarves. So, as the drow were sending their evil agents to kill the last survivors, the mother returned to the battle, entrusting her son to the half-orc druid Mako Friendofsharks.
Garikai never saw his mother again, but he knew in his dreams that she had died to divert the drow from finding him, while Mako took Garikai to safety in the larger harbor town where Mako lived near (but not in, for what orc wants to live where everyone hates him just for showing up?)

From that day on, Garikai has considered Mako Friendofsharks his father, and has been his devoted son and student. After his graduation as a full urban druid, Mako Friendofsharks told his son that he must go on a vision quest and would be back in a week. But three weeks have passed, and the sharks of the harbor have told Garikai that they are not pleased. They fear their healer and confidant is dead, and so does Garikai. On the advice of a shark whom Mako viewed as a companion, and whom Mako entrusted his adopted dwarvish son to guard as well as she could, Garikai begins the quest to find his missing father.

He joined the Scarab Sages because Mako belonged to them. Mako believed that the long lost great beyond was where the jewels the Sacarab Sages sought were hidden, and he was fascinated with the world beyond. It was his only interest outside of the sharks and the tutelage of his beloved adopted son, Garikai.
He passed that knowledge on to his adopted son, making him a master of lore, especially historical, to the point where, though not a normal set of knowledge for druids, history is one of his most excellent aptitudes.
So the son joined the foster-father in becoming one of the Scarab Sages, and when his father disappeared longer than he and the sharks felt to be appropriate, he began his quest there by asking their members if they knew where his father was . . .
