About Marie-Félicité-Denise Pleyel

Character Summary

Félicité has spent the past 20 years of her life trying to find a way to resurrect her dead husband. She's ready to live again.

Background Narrative:
Félicité laughed out loud as the Pharasman priest droned, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust." A black-clad Félicité was the only one that knew that inside the casket was neither ashes nor dust, but the mummified remains of her beheaded husband, Joseph Étienne Camille Pleyel. She had carried his mummified corpse around longer than she had known him. The priest and acolytes paused momentarily, unsure of what was transpiring. Félicité gestured for them to continue.

A small choir quietly sang a funeral dirge, their quivering voices betraying their terror of attracting too much attention. One never knew who - or what - would report back to the Gray Gardeners.

Félicité closed her eyes as the melody brought her back to her wedding, the memory of a 50-member, 6-part choir singing as she and Camille waltzed in a grand hall as hundreds of their friends and family watched in awe. Gloria, Iomedae, they sang - glory to Iomedae. Where was Iomedae when the Gardeners stormed their concert hall, where was Iomedae when the Gardeners dragged Camille from his beloved piano to his summary execution? Félicité vowed to replace that song in her memory with a better song.

The choir scattered as soon as the last chord finished echoing through the foggy air, and the acolytes began quickly shoveling dirt onto the casket. Even the Pharasman priest begged leave as fast as he could.

"Madame, please come inside. It is not safe after dark," he pleaded to the sole attendee at the funeral. The Pleyel family plot was distant from the wards that protected the cemeteries by the chapel, and there was evidence that the graves here had been unearthed - either from above ground or from below ground - multiple times in the past 10 years.

"You may go," whispered Félicité. The priest did not argue, only replying, "All who live must face her judgement," before he departed. He broke into a run as soon as he felt she could no longer see him.

And just like that, Félicité was alone.

A deep growling reverberated throughout the cemetery, too deep to localize to any particular direction, but loud enough to feel in the ground. Cries in the distance suggested that the priest and the acolytes could hear it from their location. Félicité calmly reached down and drew her bow.

"Thou has yet to pay the pox," a haunting voice echoed. "This meaningless defiance does not absolve you of your debt."

"Then, come collect it," she replied.

Félicité's Repentance:
Félicité sits down at the piano and looks at the keys. Nocturne, in B flat minor, a familiar voice echoed. Félicité looked over and saw Camille sitting beside her, and a sense of calm settled upon her soul despite the raucous conversation from the masque, intimidating threats from Gregoth, and the furious dance battle Turrey was engaged in.

Nocturne in B flat minor, Opus 9 No 1

The first B flat rings out across the hall, and Félicité dives into the piece with her eyes closed. Camille sits beside her, nodding approvingly as she breezes through the pencil-marked pages, murmuring his appreciation. He was a virtuoso; Félicité was, at best, an enthusiastic amateur. But he loved to listen to her play, and she felt no trace of self-consciousness as she played for him.

Félicité watches as Turrey and the creature dance. When the creature looks to have the edge, Félicité adjusts the tempo, just slightly faster or slower, to throw them off balance. When Turrey has the edge, she holds steady, letting the predictable flow of the music carry them to victory.

As the vestiges of the song reverberate across the hall, Camille rises from his seat and applauds. Félicité stands and curtsies to him. She reaches out for an embrace, but he has already begun fading. This time, however, Félicité feels no anger. She smiles like a beaming bride as he disappears from her view, and vows to reunite with him in the next world.
