About Fellen, The Arcane

Fellen was born the son of an Elvin prostitute in the city of Absalom. Fellen’s father was a low ranking young noble of house Medvyed in the land of Brevoy who kept Fellen’s mother as a mistress. When he learned of his mistress’ pregnancy the Nobel used his influence to pressure the Elf to leave the country in a hurry.

Having long used her knowledge of the carnal arts to make her living Fellen’s mother found easy acceptance as a sacred prostitute in Calistria’s temple, and used the money she made there to give her son the best education she could afford. Knowing that present or not a father can often set the example for a young boy the Elvin woman told her son stories of his father every night. These stories were far more fiction than fact and young Fellen grew up believing his father was in a powerful sorcerer who went on many great adventures. The only truth the boy actually knew of his father was his name.

Fellen took to his studies well, but his dream was to one day go to a proper wizard academy, not finding himself with his father’s supposed natural talent for magic. His constant inspiration was an heirloom passed down to him from his father, a battered silver ring infused with his father’s arcane power. In reality the ring was nothing more than a plain ring left as a tip by one of the customers of the Calistrian temple and used by his mother as a prop in one of her stories.

Unfortunately when Fellen was finally able to get his hands on books to teach him self magic he was unable to wrap his head around the wizard way of doing things. He felt a natural instinct for magic, so he thought, and everything the books said went counter to the way his gut said these things were supposed to work. Still, despite the difficulty he kept at it knowing of no other path to the kind of power his father wielded. It was during one of his fruitless study sessions in a local park that he ran into Tansyladonna for the first time.

You see while Fellen’s father was not actually a sorcerer the Medvyed house holds ancient ties to the Fey, and ironically enough it was this that would open Fellen’s path to power. Tansyladonna is an ancient and powerful fey who like many of her kind enjoyed messing with mortals for sport. But where most of her kind tended to keep to the wild Tansy liked to influence mortals to bring the wild to their cities in the form of parks and gardens, giving her a link to her power in the heart of the cities built to keep the ‘civilized’ races safe from her kind. It was during a lark through one of her parks in human guise that she was drawn to the blood of a young boy reading under an old oak.

Fellen had no idea who this beautiful girl was that approached him, but for some reason he felt as easy around her as if they had been old friends. He found himself opening up to this stranger, practically telling her his entire life story. After he told her of his trouble learning wizardry Tansy asked to see the boy’s ring, and much to his surprise Fellen found himself handing over his prized possession to this girl he’d not known before today. Looking the ring over Tansy told Fellen the ring was asleep and had to be woken up in order for Fellen to inherit his father’s power. She brought the ring up to her lips and kissed the band of silver, imbuing it with some of her power and establishing herself as Fellen’s patron.
Magic came easy to the half-elf after his run in with Tansy, and Fellen met with her often over the next few years, ecstatic at finally living up to his father’s legacy. Tansy, knowing full well what kind of man Fellen’s father really was, encouraged him to seek the man out telling Fellen how proud his father would be of him. Thinking this a grand idea, Fellen gathered his meager possessions, kissed his mother goodbye, and set off into the world to find his fortune and his father.

It took Fellen a full ten years to make his way to Brevoy, as he found himself constantly caught up in adventures along the way. He managed to make a grand reputation for himself during this time, as well as a fair few friends and enemies. The closest of these friends was a gnomish bard named Dellah. Fellen and Dellah were both part of a band of adventures, brought together by chance or fate, who through much hardship managed to save the city of Cassomir from being overrun by a Hobgoblin army. When their group disbanded Dellah and Fellen decided to continue on together, Fellen’s quick thinking and arcane talent giving Dellah great inspiration for her songs, and Dellah’s songs lending great weight to Fellen’s growing reputation.

By the time Fellen was finally able to track his father down the half elf had already pieced together who his father really was. Fellen’s father was not quite as low in house Medvyed as he had been when Fellen’s mother left for Absalom, for he was possessed of a base cunning and talent with managing money. Truthfully the man would be much higher, where it not for a nasty rumor about an Elvin mistress, and a bastard son born by her. Fellen’s father denied these rumors openly, and showed open contempt for all those of Elf blood he came across.

Not long after arriving in Brevoy Fellen confronted his father, and the meeting was unpleasant to say the least. Hot with rage the half elf nearly slew his noble father, and mostly burnt down the tavern he found him in. By the time they parted Fellen had a true inheritance from his father. A large purse of money, sent back to Absalom and his mother, and a slightly blood stained letter of introduction to Lord Mayor Ioseph Sellemius praising him as the perfect man to help reclaim the Stolen Lands for Brevoy. Fellen knew full well his father hoped that he would die like so many others who tried to tame the River Kingdoms, but he didn’t care, he was off with his best friend on his next great adventure.
