2032 was a significant year in human history. It was the year that the selected 5% of the entire worlds population set off on an expedition to travel a millennia into the future. Let’s take a few steps back to give some background to the previous statement. You see Terra, by 2032 had become unsustainable for the human population and people were dying in droves as the depleted environment, lack of resources, and global wars for said resources torn the planet asunder. The writing on the wall was clear, and those in control of what remained of the United Nations decided on the unthinkable, enacting Project: Seed, an ambitious operation to transport the cream of the population into the future in the hopes that given enough time, Terra would be able to recover and heal the damages done to her during the course of human existence. A massive fleet was built from orbit in secret, with the unbelievably immense UNSC Ark as the flagship, designed to hold the 15% chosen in a state of stasis until their return to Terra. Inevitably, the secrecy of the project was soon shattered and millions rioted and died in their attempts to protest the injustice and elitism of the remaining stable governments and their attempt to abandon the “Third-Worlders”, as they were so dubbed.
Project: Seed was a gamble, based on scientific theories of time-travel, relying on the UNSC Ark, with the other elements of the fleet attached to her exterior and some docked in her interior, to attain 99.99% the speed of light in orbit around the fringes of the Sol system. It would take 5 to 6 years for the vessel to attain the speed it needed to reach, and once achieved would spend the next six months circling the system with a skeleton crew to monitor the ship’s activity. If the theory was proven true, time would slow to a crawl for those aboard, while hundreds of years would pass on Terra, with the hope that when they returned, the world would have healed. This, of course, would not turn out quite the way they anticipated…

CHAPTER 1: HOMECOMING
ACT 1: AWAKENING

There's a funny thing about cryo-sleep. Once you're under, time has no meaning and is quite possibly the closest thing to death without actually snuffing it. One moment you're lying back in the bed-like chamber, while scientist monkey about plugging X into Y and mumbling in endless techno-babble, asking you to count back to a billion, and then suddenly nothing. But of course that nothing stretches on for seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, and millennia; all within the space of a second. Then nothing. You don't exist, your consciousness wanders, and you're never fully aware of your existence or lack of it depending on how you look at it. Then suddenly...you're born again...for the second time, out of the darkness.

The first thing you hear is the sounds of gears whirling and klaxons going off, although all you can see is darkness, as your eyes are useless, preventing you from seeing your environment as you awaken. Slowly but surely things transition from darkness to blurred surroundings, the shapes and sounds of people moving about and speaking in strangely distorted voices fill your mind. Then the sensation of warm hands grasping your body nearly overwhelms you, as those shadowy forms around you lift you up from your bed, sitting you down on something you can’t identify, but is most likely a chair of some sort. A face comes slowly into focus along with a bright light that comes on with a distinct ‘click’, blinding you with its intensity. “Keep focusing on the mlsfijfhajie” says a deeply distorted voice, “it’ll help your msflu adjust.”

After a few moments the face comes into focus, revealing a man wearing a doctor’s white facemask, partially obscuring his features. The world around you swims and distorts, as if looking through a bowl of swirling liquid, causing your head to feel light. You see several other people or at least you think they're people, sitting next to you in wheelchairs. The man with the doctors’ facemask addresses you all saying: “I am going to ask you all a series of questions, and I need you to answer them as best you can”, says the man. "Don't worry if you can't remember something, as that's quite common." With that, the doctor then begins his questions, asking each of you the same questions. "Do you recall your name? What is your age? Where are you now? How do you feel?" With each answer he checks off something on a data pad, sometimes nodding, sometimes making strange expressions with the facial features you can see.

Perception Check DC 10:

Spoiler:
As the man asks you questions, you notice you’re in a fairly large, well lit, sterile-looking chamber, much longer then it is deep, although your depth perception is off. You appear to be sitting in a wheelchair, while behind you are rows of strange machines that resemble high-tech beds. What is alarming is that behind each man, is a soldier in full armor, wielding an assault rifle and watching carefully.

Welcome to my campaign, this thread is for any discussion on your characters, level advancement, the campaign, or just random stuff. Be sure to double check this alias for updates to the campaign rules, etc.

I'm currently writing up a episodic campaign using
D20 Modern/Future, and seeing as I haven't seen too
many of those type of PBP's, I figured I'd check interest
firest before I write up the campaign in detail.
The adventure is hand-written, will be point-buy, although
I haven't set how many points the PCs will have, and will
be a mix of Sci-fi and possibly some psychic powers.

The game will be pretty open-ended, but with direction, once the initial introduction is completed, and will have a dark/gritty feel. PC survival should be difficult, but fair, and no punches pulled. I have a main plot outlined with plenty of room for changes made by the PCs as the game progresses, within reason of course.

The PCs will be specialists/military personnel with an emphasis
on exploration, combat, and some vehicles.

Synopsis: The Earth has been abandoned long ago, after a series of calamities had caused the planet to become nearly uninhabitable. The nations of the world then constructed a massive mother ship to transport those of the population to be “selected” to carry on the species, with the goal of achieving near light-speed to travel into the future to give the planet time to heal the damage the people of earth have caused. The journey takes roughly 6 years to reach speeds fast enough to slow time for the crew inside, with the mother-ship circling the outer edge of the solar system with only a minimal crew to keep watch over the ships systems, while the majority of the population sits in suspended animation. It is then that several select groups of specialists are brought out of the deep freeze and used as a recon force to scour the planet to check on it’s state of recovery.

Campaign Feel: Final Fantasy The Spirits Within, Appleseed, Aliens. Although not entirely based off of those series, a lot of inspiration and mood would be a good comparison to what I have in mind.

I'm probably a few weeks out before starting, but I intend to make it as polished as possible before actually recruiting. Based on interest I’ll move forward with finishing up the first episode.

The Story So Far...
The realms of the lands are unstable; a battle for balance is always taking place. From the far reaches of the Northern Marches to the island kingdoms of Lagos in the south, the light and the dark struggle. For reasons unknown, the fates seem to smile upon you during these times, choosing you out of the thousands to prevail in the name of the light; casting down the darkness that threatens to engulf the world. For many years you have lived and fought together, strengthen by one another in the face of countless challenges that the fates have hurled against you…and you have persevered.
It was during your time spent in the Southern Kingdoms of Abrahil that you met Lord Thernthil, a minor noble of Fallcrest, sent abroad in a desperate search for help. Having been turned down by the kingdom of Abrahil, he begged your company to travel to the Vale to give what aid you could to it’s struggling populous.
Accepting the desperate mans plea, you journeyed to the heart of the Vale towards the town of Fallcrest, picking up various rumors on the state of the realm from those you came across. These rumors told of nothing specific, but painted a disturbing image of monsters roaming unchallenged, the corruption of rulers, and hidden dark forces at work behind the scenes. This, of course, is nothing new to you. Once you arrive at Fallcrest, only then will you be able to tell fact from fiction.

The Nentir Vale

Chapter 1: Into the Vale
The sky is clear and the weather beautiful as you travel from the southern kingdoms northwards towards Harkenwold, a small town within the Nentir Vale. The journey has been uneventful, with only the occasional farmer or merchant to break up the monotony of the near endless wilderness that stretches before you. Abandoned farmstead and burnt out ruins seem to be one of the most common landmarks so far, confirming the rumors you’ve heard about the Vale’s current state of decline.
The past few days however, have been spent traveling north, just east of the outer edge of the Great Forest; a place ruled by the raw power of nature, where no human has dominion. Before you lies the King’s Road, old and in disrepair from lack of use and law, while to the east and north are long stretches of grassland filled with a myriad of bright flowers and the ever present tufts of pollen that flow thru the air effortlessly.

What are you doing as you travel to Harkenwold?

Evil Evil Evil 666

Welcome to the "Curses" PbP OOC thread, I'll be your friendly DM. Any questions, comments, ramblings, character changes, and final character designs will post here.

I'd like to see if anyone would be interested in playing a module I wrote myself called "Curses". Below are the details...

Premise: This is a one shot 4E adventure for five, 7th level characters. Recruitment will be first come first serve and I will keep in mind alts, but I will need to approve the character concept before you're in for sure. Although it is a one shot, if people want to continue to play more once the adventure concludes then that is also a possibility.

Setting: Points of Light; Nentir Vale (only slightly modified). This adventure has been written by me and is totally complete and self-contained, with options to expand depending on how it plays out.

Style: Probably a 50/50 balance in combat/role-playing with variations in-between. It kind of depends how the party likes to play, as the adventure will have kick in the door moments that can be played out in a more subtle way if the party likes. The party will have a good degree of freedom to choose their path.

World-wise, it will be more mysterious and somewhat dark. Only small pockets of civilization exist, acting as "safe zones" in between the vast wilderness. The surrounding lands and forests of the world are wondrous, mysterious, and dangerous places, filled with strange creatures. Think along the lines of Legend, The Brothers Grimm, and Mirror Mask, to name a few.

Races: Generally I’d like to stick to the more conventional races, but if you have a good concept involving a stranger looking race, then I can make exceptions.

Classes: Any combination of all classes are allowed, I’ll leave party balancing up to the party itself.

Ability Scores/Equipment: Standard point buy per PHB, standard wealth for 7th level characters (1 8th level magic item, 1 7th level magic item, 1 6th level magic item, and any extra money can be spent towards whatever you wish). Can take as many non-magical items as needed, within reason of course, I don’t wanna see “Galleon” in your item list…

Background: A short 1 to 2 paragraph background is acceptable since this is a one shot. The party is considered to have been together for a decent amount of time, so you can work together with backgrounds, and you will start the adventure knowing each other. As far as character backgrounds to select, any are fine with the exception of Forgotten realms or Eberron.

Alignment: For the most part and for party cooperation I’d prefer good aligned or Unaligned characters.

Rules: Pretty standard stuff:
· Try to post at least once a day, although I’m not going to be a nazi about it, but if you are unable to post any kind of notice would be appreciated. If needed or if you do not post within a 24-48 hour window, I can/will run your character for you.
· For your characters, create an alias and detailed information for your stats/bonuses/powers/items so that in case I need to run your character, I can do so fairly easily.
· Pantheon will be core deities, although if there is a deity you really like outside of the core ones, I can make exceptions for this as well.
· This adventure will be pretty no-holds barred (since it’s a one shot), so expect the monsters to behave appropriately in respect to downed opponents and such. If a character dies, then that’s it, but I am more then happy to work in a replacement for the dead character ASAP.
· In combat it’s ok to go out of order if your turn is coming up; any retro rulings will happen for immed interrupts/reactions or if I happen to miss something. I do plan to run the monsters realistically as far as actions, so that means intelligent monsters will tend to make logical choices in regards to status effects, choosing their targets when marked, etc, while less-intelligent ones will have more knee-jerk/instinctive reactions to effects, marking, etc. This is not a hard and fast rule, but will be the general behavor...but there are always exceptions...

About me: I’ve been DM’ing since I was 13ish (red box), now I’m 32 and still DM’ing, so I have experience, but this will be my first PBP game, hence the one shot adventure. I’d like to get my feet wet but not set up a massive campaign. I will be using maps for encounters so being able to access photobucket or some similar site will be necessary.

I’m always up for a good time and friendly, so if there are any issues in game (something I miss during combat or if you have any questions) let me know in game or you can send me an email to
