Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Hey guys, I'm sorry for the extended silence. I'm overwhelmingly busy still and sadly I'm going to have to take some time away from the boards. You can bot me or write me out, or kill me off spectacularly. Thanks for the opportunity to play, I really enjoyed what I got to play of this module and the other characters. Enjoy the rest of the game.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

RL=crazy; plz bot as needed.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander frowns at the ineffectiveness of his shot, but with few other options he loads another cartridge and fires again at the damaged lamprey.
ranged touch (cover): 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 12 - 4 = 19
for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

I'm sorry- I was convinced I had posted for this round already...

Unable to safely employ his bombs in such tight quarters, Elliomander loads a cartridge and fires it at the closest lamprey.
ranged touch (soft cover): 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 12 - 4 = 16
for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

***Readied Action***
As the pile of filth shifts and rises, Elliomander fires a round at the barely revealed threat...
ranged touch (cover): 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 12 - 4 = 12, for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

***Round 1***
Elliomander feels his stomach turn as the foul creature comes fully into view. "What is that thing?!?" he asks with disgust. Without waiting for an answer, he dumps the holy water that suddenly appears in his hand into his gun then quickly charges a round and fires again... swift: draw holy water (tail); move: infuse it to ammo (grenadier ability); standard: explosive missile
ranged touch (cover): 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 12 - 4 = 24
for (p): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
and (fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9
plus (holy): 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Standing in the hallway, Elliomander pulls up the front of his shirt to cover his nose against the smell. He crouches slightly and leans toward the wall to get the clearest shot possible at the heap Gar prods.

readying an action to shot if anything pops out of the pile

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

It seems a moot point but it does keep burning (1d6/round) from the bomb unless someone puts it out

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

its on fire and takes 1d6 ⇒ 6 burn damage

Elliomander coughs and then shakes off the daze that started to creep in with the spores. Acting quickly he fires off another charged round.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20, for (p): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
and (fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander takes one more step to the side to get a clear line of fire, then he charges a round and fires at the creatures with a pair of thunderous booms.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31, for (p): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
and (fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12

using selective bombs, obviously

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

What's up with Amelia? I thought she was joining us in the tunnel when the sounds of combat started? Does she need some time off IRL? If she's just not 'in story' because we took off without her then I'll run back for her...

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander watches as Gar blesses himself.

hmm... I've been so frugal with my extracts that I've barely used them... if he's certain we're close to encountering something this would seem a good opportunity...

He draws a small glass vial and imbibes its contents (cats grace extract) before continuing to follow behind and to the side of the inquisitor.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"That's right, yeah," Elliomander confirms with a nod, "good memory." Gun at the ready, he follows Gar in.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

"There's a bag of jewels in its mouth..." Elliomander mutters as he finishes cleaning of his fingers, "that seems an odd place to keep them..."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander keeps his gun fixed on the apparent corpse while he cautiously reaches down with his off hand to pull the note from its mouth.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"I could be wrong," Elliomander quietly states while looking around, "but those creatures didn't seem like the kind of things that would have written that message...

perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander steps back from the cloaker that attacked him, charges a round as he loads it, and fires...

touch attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
for: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
plus (fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6) + 6 = 18

gosh, I hope that hit... max damage!

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

if I missed so be it, but (unless I've misunderstood the distance) I should be targeting touch AC...

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

taking my readied attack (as soon as cloaker 2 moves to attack)
Elliomander is more prepared this time and as soon as the creature moves he fires...
touch attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19, for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

dammit, I should have been ready for that

Elliomander positions his finger on his trigger and prepares to fire at anything else that comes out of the shadows...
readying an action to attack

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Well, at least we learned something," Elliomander comments, "something little and creepy is using these old sewer tunnels..."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander exhales sharply and shakes his head. Without saying a word he readies his gun and follows Gar into the probable trap...

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander pauses for only a moment before abandoning his poor excuse for a hiding spot and retreating back to his associates. "There's something else down here," he reports, "around the first bend; it sounds fairly large..."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

2 questions: whatever made the sound is still outside of my 60' darkvision, right? and, am I aware that I totally botched my stealth check or was it so bad that I think I'm well hidden?

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"I can see in the dark..." Elliomander offers. "I'm going to poke around a little bit while you look around here..."

With that he draws his cloak and disappears out of the light. He quietly makes his way a hundred and twenty feet down the tunnel before returning to the group. Along the way he searches for turns, more alcoves, and any hidden doors (or traps).
stealth: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

we can take a detour into the sewers right now if people want but, for the record, my suggestion was just to see how common it was to find these entrances near murder scenes

"Oh, heading straight in are we?" Elliomander asks as Vera draws the key. He draws his trusty firearm and gently blows across the barrels to get rid of any dust that might have settled inside.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Each time the group of investigators passes nearby one of the old crime scenes Elliomander insists they pause to look for old sewer entrances (ones in which the found key should work) within a block or two.

perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander quietly smirks upon hearing that even Amelia failed to notice that he had gone snooping as well.

"Which route are we taking to the next address?" he asks as they leave, "if we're traveling near any of the old crime scenes we could quickly look around just to see if there are any of the old sewer entrances nearby..."

knowledge(local): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
are we going near any of the old crime scenes?

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander seems distracted throughout the conversation, though he makes it a point not to be distracting.

I don't like this one bit... only one way in or out, and that rickety at best... and exposed... if our hidden adversary wanted to take another shot at us this wouldn't be a half bad place to do it...

As the others work to grease the proverbial wheels with Bill the gunman quietly checks the apartment for mirrors.

stealth: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander finally looks up from the empty bowl that had been home to his delightfully warm stew. "We ought to look around the areas where we know attacks happened to see if there are sewer entrances nearby," he offers "though I suppose we could follow up with the customers first- the watch is more likely to catch on to that one, if we want to beat them to it..."

After savoring another sip of his hot cider he tentatively adds, "Should we, uh, report to someone that we saw Muncy disappear into the Between?"

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Agreed," Elliomander mutters turning towards the tavern. When they arrive he orders a hot bowl of stew and a warm tankard of mulled cider.

"So..." he continues after a few swings of his drink, "the Between is a real place, eh? That casts some new light on our investigation..."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Either of those rooms come with a hot bowl of stew?" Elliomander asks as he meticulously wipes the condensation and melting snow from his gun.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Shaking his head, Elliomander hurried through the portal.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

its almost as though we shouldn't have rushed into an unknown world and then trecked for hours through falling, blowing snow away from the portal home...

Elliomander grits his teeth. "We don't know anything about this place..." he responds, "there's a slim chance it could actually be safe. And if it's not then the idea of luring our hunters into someone else's trap has merit..."

As Gar starts to move, he moves towards the music too.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Or you guys can stay here as bait and I'll try to sneak behind the huntsman and take him out?"

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"That seems like a terrible plan," Elliomander replies, "if we stay here that mysterious figure gets to send everything he's got at us with the order and pace he likes... if we have to fight we should become the hunters rather than the prey. If we pursue the man with the horn we might be able to avoid some of his beasts, and if we kill him it should end the hunt."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"There's more coming..." Elliomander states, knowing that everyone else can hear it as well, "we need to keep moving. We have to decide now, quickly, do we flee and look for a place to hide or make a stand, or do we head for the whoever blows the horn? That seems more dangerous, but it may also be the only way to stop it from calling more hounds..."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

As someone who GMs PbPs also, I struggle with those kinds of posts... saying something and doing something aren't the same. Truthfully, I probably wait too long for someone to post an action a lot of the time but there's like a danger of posting as if someone had acted (and got themself in trouble) when all the did was say 'we should _______'. Probably if any of us had posted something like "Elliomander follows Amelia to her defensible position then turns and readies a shot" we would have had the advantage (although, then I would have been forcing you into an action you never said you took).

I believe PbP really need to be player-driven as much as possible and that requires that we actually declare actions (which I'm not sure any of us really did in this case). I appreciate that sometimes we need time to discuss (and I still wish someone had answered Elliomander and handed him a bow- I probably could have taken out at least 2-3 dogs by single moving and shooting every round until they got to us) but we went all weekend without anyone taking an actual action so getting set upon is what we get.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

The rules aren't always 100% logical, but they're the rules. I think it's largely to represent the slight edge that whichever side dictates the terms of engagement receives (which is true to real life- there's a benefit to making the first move).

In this case, it's really our own fault- none of us made a definitive combat action so they get the advantage. We could have posted 'I stand and shoot' or 'I ready an action to attack when they get close enough' or 'we run until we find a natural choke point and then form up behind Gar' or any of a ton more things that would have constituted us being ready but we didn't.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Elliomander steps back from the singed dog attacking him, charges another cartridge and fires at it.

ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
for (physical): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
and (bomb/fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9
8 splash damage in 10'... I can leave 4 targets out of the splash but I'm not sure how tightly we're grouped... if the whole party is within the splash then I'll exclude everyone but myself.

damm... I'm running low on bombs... we need to find somewhere to hide soon...

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

You didn't mention distance... if they're more than 30' away I'll wait to pull the trigger until they hit the 30' mark.

"Sh!t," Elliomander mumbles between labored gulps of air. Without pausing to think he draws a vial of alchemists fire with his tail swift, infuses it into a cartridge move, charges it, and fires standard at whichever dog will allow the wide splash to hit two or three other dogs...
ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
for (physical): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
and (bomb/fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15
and (alchemist fire): 1d6 ⇒ 2
plus 8 splash to everything in 10'

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

this is exactly why I should have built myself some kind of musket or hackbutt by now...

"Anyone have a bow?" Elliomander asks looking at his companions, "at this range we could get off quite a few shots before they reach us..."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Amelia, I believe you also count as being protected from the cold by your racial cold resistance (unless you took some ability that trades away that resistance?)

"I have things we can use to start a fire, if we have to stop and seek shelter for the night," Elliomander offers as Gar shivers. "For now, we need to figure out what our next step is... we came chasing Muncy and that's a dead end now. We could look for what killed him, we could explore and try to learn more about what's crossing over from here and why, or we could try to find our way back before we're completely, hopelessly lost and then come back with some warmer clothes and whatnot."

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander frowns as he chambers one more cartridge and stares off after the vanished beast. "Well, if we're going to go let's go," he answers heading off in the direction of Muncy's tracks.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"It could bring back friends if we let it go..." Elliomander remarks as he loads a cartridge and fires it at the fleeing creature...
ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 - 2 = 10, for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander moves to follow the creature dragging Vera away, and to get a clear shot at it...
ranged touch, wind: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 - 2 = 24, for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander grimaces a bit at the sight of the spongy gray child latched on to Vera.

best not to risk a bomb so close to those two in these winds...

Loading a normal cartridge, he takes aim at the bloody-mouthed creature and fires.
touch v grappled, with cover, in wind: 1d20 + 10 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 - 4 - 2 = 8
for: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

editted to remove penalty for firing into melee- I have precise shot.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander smirks as he feels Mama's magic creep in. He moves up to within thirty feet of the densest grouping, charges a cartridge and fires it at the child in the center of the cluster...
ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 10 + 1 - 2 = 19
for (physical): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5, and (fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12
plus 8 points of splash damage within 10'; I'll exclude any PCs in range if necessary

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

cold resistance

"I can smoke them out if you like," Elliomander offers twirling a glass vial in his hand.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Apparently unconcerned with the safety of the between's forest, Elliomander charges a cartridge and fires it at the spider...
ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 10 - 2 = 16
for (physical): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5, and (fire): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5) + 6 = 17

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

With his gun still in hand, Elliomander takes a step back from the tree and looks for Muncy's footsteps.

Assuming his prints continue past here... "Let's not get distracted..." he cautions quietly, "we'll never catch Muncy if we don't keep moving."
