Eklektos Apofysi is strange in appearance. He is tall for a man, being 6'3", but very thin at 185 lbs. His dark hair seems perpetually storm-tossed, and at times seems to flutter in wind that is not there. Though brown, it has at times a metallic sheen. Strange as this seems, his eyes are his most striking feature. They are violet, and have a glow to them. He is accompanied everywhere by a black cat that comes up to his hip. Background:
Eklektos Apofysi has always been different. He never knew his father growing up. His mother, Kella, was never one who wanted to marry, and in fact had refused all of the offers in the small village in the Barrowood. 18 years ago, there was a storm in the area that blew for three days and nights. On the second night, at the peak of the storm, a knock came to Kella’s door. On the doorstep was a tall man, with wild hair and beard, and with violet eyes. Kella invited him in against the storm, and as they talked, she fell in love with him. She took him into her bed, and when she awoke in the morning, he was gone, leaving only a copy of the Hymn to the Winds and Waves with the name Eklektos Apofysi written inside. A baby was born 9 months later, and from birth it was apparent that there was something different about him. He had his father’s violet eyes, although they had a slight glow to them, and his hair was perpetually storm-tossed as his father’s had been. Nobody else in the village had seen the man, having all been inside against the storm. They viewed the birth with a combination of fear and awe. Kella gave him the name inside the book. As he grew, Eklektos showed a great affinity for the things of nature. It soon became apparent that he was more comfortable in nature than with his mother’s people. He was naturally able to walk among wild animals, and he easily knew the ways of herb lore and healing. His knowledge of nature and his ability to see and survive away from his mother’s people was unparalleled among his peers, and rivaled many of the experienced hunters in his village. He would frequently spend days at a time away from the village in the woods. One day, when he was perhaps 12, he returned with a young panther. It was completely black, with the shadows of spots throughout its fur. Eklektos announced that his name was Theron, and that the cat would be his companion. As time went on, Theron grew and Eklektos began to learn things that gave his fellow villagers pause. He could create water, and he soon learned to be able to see poison in a body and to make objects shed light. At age 15, he left home. His mother thought little of it, since he was often away from home. He didn’t return this time, however. He began walking with Theron, and didn’t stop for many days. Eventually, he made it to Westpool. In his journeys, he saw many things that troubled him: people harvesting the darkwoods of the Barrowood; people having set a leash and control on the mighty river. He tried to stop many of them from despoiling the natural beauty all around them, but nobody would listen. He tried to find the source of their, as he viewed it, madness. The only thing he could find out was that Westcrown was the local seat of power. Eklektos made his way down the river toward Westcrown, at this point 16. Theron continued to accompany him. When he reached Westcrown, he was struck by how unnatural the entire city was. As he wandered, he found a building that was beginning to become overgrown again. He tried to enter, wishing to see how nature was reclaiming the building and how he might encourage the process, but guards denied him entry. From them, he got the name of those who had built the building: The Pathfinders. Eklektos asked around, and after being beaten several times by city guards, he managed to get a message out to the Pathfinders, asking why he couldn’t get into their building. For many months he did not receive a reply, and he had some work as a healer and helping people. Then a message made its way to him through a small child, along with a package. The message merely encouraged him to try and find some way into the building to investigate, and provided a contact at the main Pathfinder Lodge in Absalom to whom reports could be sent. The package was an old wayfinder, which was a gift that would “help you in your investigations.” The initials EK were on the inside cover of the device.
