About Eirikr ThundersbloodBackground:
Eirikr Thundersblood is the son of a Ustalavan peasant woman and a Ulfen wanderer. The wanderer, whose name was Svarig Thundersblood, regaled the villagers of a small hamlet in Lozeri with tales of his adventures and one of the townsfolk, a woman named Serina, was immediately smitten with him. Svarig began to court her and soon they were wed, and they began a life as farmfolk, and soon they were blessed with a son.
As young boy, Eirikr was part troublemaker and part charmer. He was prone to getting into fights but was able to talk his way out of any mess he found himself in. This attracted the ire of some of the sons of the nobles of the Palatine council of Lozeri, and Eirikr frequently clashed with them, especially when he started to show musical talent; Serina dreamed of sending him to train as a musician--he showed particular talent with the flute, and Serina saved her money to buy him a particularly fine one--but Svarig had other plans for him. Unbeknownst to Serina, Svarig was a werewolf and a worshiper of Jezelda. He began to kill the village’s inhabitants one by one to honor the demon lord, all the while watching to see if his son had inherited his lycanthropy—Eirikr’s bestial features and attitude gave him hope that he had, and he planned to eventually introduce him to the worship of Jezelda. Secretly, Eirikr had discovered his father’s unholy symbol an seen the strange symbol tattooed on his back, and after consulting with a travelling soothsayer about the subject and had thus guessed that his father's secret religion. Svarig’s depredations soon attracted the attention of the noble council of Lozeri, who dispatched hunters to track down the monster terrorizing the village. Svarig was soon cornered by the hunting party and wounded with a spear—he managed to escape back to the Thundersblood farm but
The villagers didn’t care who, exactly, was the werewolf—all they knew as it had been tracked down to the Thundersblood house, and now it could be slain. They were egged on by fathers of the boys who Eirikr had fought with, which is perhaps why they barred the doors of the farmhouse and lit it aflame instead of simply entering and killing the werewolf.. Svarig, already weakened from the night before, quickly succumbed to his wounds. Serina hurried Eirikr into the basement but when she went to try to find a way for them to escape the burning farmhouse she was killed when part of the house collapsed on top of her. Eirikr attempted to escape the basement but found that he was trapped; his attempt to break free merely ended with his hands severely burned. He prayed to Jezelda, begging her to give him the strength to tear out the throats of the villagers, but she did not seem to hear his prayers. As he slipped into unconsciousness, he imagined that he saw strange blue-green lights flitting through the flames. When he awoke it was the middle of the night, and all around him were the ruins of his former home. His hands and forearms had turned black and grown sensitive to touch, and the rest of his body was pockmarked with black scars as well. He found in the ruins of his home his father’s unholy symbol—it had cracked along its center and its unholy power had been snuffed out, replaced with something that he couldn’t understand. He took the symbol and the spear still lodged in his father’s gut, and then he escaped the village under the cover of night. He fled into the Shudderwood, hoping that he could find refuge with one of the werewolf packs located therein. He sought shelter in a strange stone ruin and that night he was alternatively tormented and comforted by his dreams. When he awoke, he found himself surrounded by a pack of wolves, and for a moment he thought that this was the end—but the wolves did not harm him. After living among the wolves for a several years, Eirikr felt compelled by his dreams to depart them and return to life among the civilized people. One of the wolves went with him, a beast with black fur and red eyes that he has named “Ashen”. He met a caravan of Varisians, and traveled with them for a time; as he journeyed, he found that since his time in the wood he had gained strange magical powers. Eirikr paid for his keep by helping to guard the caravan; he also rediscovered his gift for music, though now he turned to song since the burns on his hands made playing the flute too painful. Though he appreciated his time among the caravanserai, part of him still yearned to find and join a pack of werewolves, though his dreams seemed to warn against it. Eventually, he grew to trust one of the Varisians he had developed a bit of a crush on, and he asked him if he understood what his dream might mean. At first the Varisian talked about Desna, but as they spoke he realized that what Eirikr described sounded more like Ashava. Eirikr began to wonder if she was the source of his oracular power; the dreams that haunted him—of dancing in graveyards under the moon, of being pursued and devoured by giant animals, and of flames—were supremely unhelpful in answering that question. Now he has begun to dream of winter, and snow falling on summer flowers. Strangely enough these dreams have drawn him south, to a land where snow is nearly unheard of—to Taldor.
Appearance:
Eirikr is a tall young man, with wild, unkempt hair the color of copper, ruddy white skin covered in countless freckles, and sky blue eyes. He is tall and wiry and his teeth seem a bit too large for his mouth and his canines in particular are far too sharp, and his nose is, in his own words, a bit like a pig’s in the way that it is shaped. His ears are especially prominent, with just the slightest suggestion of a point that is easily mistaken as a mark of elven heritage—a mistake he is usually fine with not correcting. Personality:
While the loss of his family have rendered him somewhat melancholy, Eirikr covers this up under a façade of humor and sarcasm. He is a bit of a flirt but tends to go cold when someone tries to reciprocate. Years of living in the wild and on the road have left him rather unconcerned with social niceties, but he makes up for these failing through his innate charisma. Still, he can be rather curt even when he’s trying to be polite; wolves tend to be more frank than people regarding most matters. He tends to be evasive about his family history, at most admitting to having been orphaned in a house fire but little else. He tends to be a bit fidgety, and usually hums or whistles to himself when he’s not talking. Eirikr strongly dislikes nobility, and is generally distrustful of followers of moralistic gods, though he tries to judge people on an individual basis. Equipment:
Eirikr’s most important possessions are the items he recovered from the ruins of his house: the spear that killed his father, the broken unholy symbol of Jezelda, and his flute. While the tip of the spear was originally made of silver, it broke off when it lodged in Svarig’s chest, and Eirikr had to craft a new spearhead himself. The unholy symbol is no longer recognizable as belonging to Jezelda; the moon is broken down the middle and half of it has gone gray and cloudy. The flute is broken as well (and even if it wasn’t, Eirikr would have difficulty playing it because of the burns on his hands). Eirikr wears a combination of tattered furs and hide that he has scrounged together, though usually a little less than is appropriate for the climate. Religion:
Eirikr was raised in the Pharasmin tradition of his mother but was being slowly drawn to the worship of Jezelda before his parents were murdered. However, the intervention of Ashava and the indifference of Jezelda has left him confused and uncertain in matters of faith. He sometimes wonders if perhaps they aren’t as different as they seem—the moon, after all, has many faces, and wouldn’t the god of the moon have many as well? He is of course aware of how heretical these thoughts are so mostly keeps them to himself. Motivation:
The witches of Irrisen have much secret knowledge, and Eirikr knows that more monstrous folk run free in Irrisen—but deep in his heart he hates those who seek to place themselves over others. Character Sheet:
