Character Bio:

"Doc" Arthur Wilkens has had a long and somewhat interesting life. He was born to Melissa and Jonathan Wilkens of Boston, MA in Feb 1840. His father was a lawyer in the town who encouraged young Arthur to pursue his education. Arthur's home life was primarily uneventful. He was attending university when the war of the states began. He volunteered to help as a medic for the 2nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and saw action with them at both the Battle of Atietem and the Battle of Gettysburg. After Gettysburg he was transferred through a number of hospitals serving wounded soldiers behind the lines.

After the end of the war, he finished what little was left of his degree and moved to New York city. There he joined his business partner Samuel Harper. Together they ran Harper and Wilkens Medical Dispensary until Arthur retired in 1878.

Wilkens met his wife Elizabeth Jane Hamer while working during the war and married her in 1866. She died during childbirth in the fall of 1869. The child (a son) died soon after. Arthur never sought any further companionship and instead took solace in his work helping others to live. He still keeps a picture of Elizabeth inside his breast pocket.

In the summer of 1875, Samuel Harper offered to buy out Wilkens' half of their business. Wilkens agreed and decided that it was time to see what the south had to offer after the newly ended reconstruction. His choice of location, Devil's Fork, was based on a wanted add placed the town's mayor. In his semi-retirement Arthur hopes to relax and take care of people just as he has for most of his life. The small town atmoshpere offers a welcome change from the stresses and strains of living in a large city.

Personality: Arthur is a calm personality that is slightly world weary. He is commited to helping people and will only attack to defend himself. The atrocities of war that filled his formative years has shown him what conflict and violence does to a nation and its people. Therefore, he seeks to resolve conflict where and when he can. His favorite pastimes include reading the books in his personal library and watching the children of the town play together. He still hurts from the loss of his family, and has never mentioned them to anyone in town. Even though many people in the town have told Wilkens of strange happenings that they chalk up to extraordinary powers, he is an educated realist and believes that there are scientific explanations for such accounts (hallucinogenic swamp gasses for example).

Appearance: Wilkens stands about 5' 7" and is fairly slim with a little bit of a ponch showing his age. Usually he dresses in a utilitarian manner because he might need to travel to a small farmhouse at any moment. He started to go bald and so he decided to just shave his hair off. It gets in the way during operations anyway. His eyes are a somber brown that belies the mix of peace and sadness he lives in. In all other ways he is a fairly nondescript individual.
