Detective Roldán is the spitting image of an educated Berian on first sight, from the thick beard kept meticulously groomed and trimmed, his dark, curly hair that is often pulled back and tied into a tail to keep it out of his golden eyes, right down to his manner of dress which is always kept simple, yet fashionable. Of note he's the sort to never be without a tie and vest, though a curious manner of pockets, bandoliers, pouches, and holsters seem to cover his clothing, all of which are filled with curious vials, strange bundles, and assorted tools of the alchemical sciences. His skin is more grey than green, usually left sunkissed from long hours outdoors. Frequently Digeo can be found tinkering with micro-measurements of firedust, eyeballing viscous tinctures while adding new reagents to them, or rolling loose-leaf tobacco cigarettes to keep in his personal snuffbox. Tidy, disciplined, and composed, the Berian is nevertheless a rolling wave of fury and passion beneath his erudite appearance.
Diego Ferran Roldán was born the son of a Risurian diplomat and a Berian Executora dola Liberta, his head filled from a young age with tales of his peoples' glorious political revolution. His mother, ever the firebrand, fought tirelessly to maintain the ethics of Vairday Bruse, and so Diego, too, learned to uphold the qualities of liberty, equality, and fraternity. His father paid for his education within the Panoply, pleased to see that it instructed in Risurian traditions as well as those of Ber, and it was here that Diego flourished. The young man had an avid love of science in all of its forms. He studied physics and chemistry, marveling at the wonders of Danoran firedust and what it could achieve. He delved into the social sciences, trying to figure out why, if Ber prospered in the throes of The Revolution, did other nations cling to obsolete concepts like religion and fuedalism? The world was changing, Diego saw, and he was bound and determined to be a part of that change. He pushed the limits of his studies, becoming quite enraptured with the chemical sciences. The way that an additional reagent, a subtle twist to a solution, a spark of electricity could bring forth an entirely new result, it all fascinated him. He delved deeper and deeper into understanding the ways to fundamentally rearrange the world: Alchemy. But the world was not quiet during his education. His father returned to Risur after being called home: the war with the Danorans required more bodies, and even those overseas would need to do their part for the crown. While Diego experimented with mind-and-body altering substances he had developed, his father fell somewhere in the Archipelago that had claimed so many lives senselessly. Due to the chaos of the Fourth War, Diego and his mother were not informed until the conflict had finally ended. The loss of his father changed him: at first he became angry at Risur for sending his human parent to die so needlessly, but over time he realized Risur was not truly the focus of his rage. It would take him time, though, to figure out just what had caught his vast ire. When The Panoply advised it was gather students and scholars to send to Risur as part of an educational expedition, Diego signed on immediately, vowing to see just what was it about Risur that had convinced his father it was worth fighting and dying for. Arriving in Flint, Diego was at first horrified of the conditions. His people, amongst many others from Ber and abroad, lived in segregated communities, not accepted by the local humans. Workers toiled away in boiling factories for long hours, barely making due while the businessmen and nobles who practically owned their lives pocketed ungodly amounts of gold. Where were the Enforcers of Liberty, he wondered, when police took the coin of factory owners and beat down any who clamored for better treatment? Why did the regional governor do nothing to alleviate the suffering of the working class? While the Panoply gave its lectures, Diego watched and studied. Flint, Risur, was wrong, and no matter how he tried to point this out to his teachers, he was told time and again that it was not their place to force the ideals of Le Roye Bruse upon foreigners. The young Berian insisted his father was Risurian, however, and that made the people of Flint his people as well. When the Panoply returned home, Diego stayed. At first he found work as many upon the wharfs did. He unloaded cargo ships, shoveled coal into steam engines, layed bricks for rising buildings. As he did, he came to meet the members of The Docker movement, and in them he saw something familiar. A spark of life, a desire to overthrow the shackles of oppression. These, he thought, were the Enforcers of Liberty for Risur. These would be the ones who would slay the dragon tyrants of their homeland, just as his people had once done. Rolling up his sleeves, Diego dived into the political party and was left frustratingly wanting. The Dockers, it seemed, were happy to paint revolutionary propaganda or give intellectual diatribes on egalitarian ideals, but when it came to true overthrow of the industrialists and the aristocracy, they barely had the time. Sure, a riot would break out once in a blue moon, or perhaps a poet would cynically point out the flagrant exploitation all around them and be dragged out by Pinkertons in the night, but these never went anywhere. Diego used all that his mother had taught him to try and instigate true change: he organized labor unions, he encouraged worker strikes, he pushed for mass protests. Biting Journalism. Industrial Sabotage. But in the end it was always for naught. The police would come, crack skulls, and that would be that. Picket lines would be broken. Protestors would flee for the alehouses, romanticize how much they were doing for "The Cause", and be content to drown themselves in booze and pleasant company. It was soul crushing for Diego to see that the Dockers just could not be pushed into true, radical revolution: their movement was based on artistry, not dragon slaying. Dejected, he came to the next best solution: The Dockers still needed help, and the state wasn't giving it to them, so he would. Where the police ignored Docker crimes and troubles, he put his education to work by opening a Private Investigations office. He made it known far and wide that those needing assistance could come to him when the authorities would not listen. His talents with tonics and tinctures served him well, and Diego became a respected detective amongst the local neighborhood. Yet, while serving the intent of the law by day, by night he still did all he could to spark a fire within the Dockers. It was another failed attempt at this that sparked his latest idea: if The Dockers would not change society by force, society itself would have to change. Scowling at the idea the entire time, Diego joined the RHC to serve a force for justice from the inside. If he could change the perception of The Dockers, or make the eyes closer to the crown realize the injustices they perpetrated, then perhaps. Perhaps. Revolution would come to Risur after all. |
