BACKGROUND
The best mistake Dereje ever made was trying to rob a priest of Abadar. The dwarf cuffed him hard across the face and proceeded to drag him all the way to Skyside. Dereje begged for his life, fearing what retribution awaited him, but instead of being handed over to the authorities, he was promptly deposited in the temple and put to work. Over the next few months, the boy atoned for his sin by keeping the temple tidy and polishings its golden surfaces. He was fed and dressed in fine linens, under the expectation that he would work even harder to pay off his debt. Before long, his sponsor was providing him with an education, teaching him all he knew about the sciences of chemistry, economics, and engineering; after teaching him how to read, of course. On paper, he was an indentured servant, but in practice, he had become an acolyte and an apprentice to the priest.
By the time he was a young man, Dereje had been inducted into the clergy of Abadar. And yet, he was plagued by the realization that he had taken on a loan he could not possibly repay. The solution he was offered was a simple one - to pledge the rest of his life to the Master of the First Vault, to bring great wealth to his church, and to help ensure the prosperity of Alkenstar City. For this end, he spent the next chapter of his life learning to fight. In lieu of his god’s favored crossbow, for his own weapon, he chose the gun, a symbol of everything that was great about his city. Since then, Dereje has taken it upon himself to defend Alkenstar’s vital trade routes from the likes of pirates and the monsters lurking within the Mana Wastes.
One day, the paladin was assigned a mission of particular importance - an attempt to establish trade with Sargava, on the other side of Garund. Given the distance of the colony, it was necessary to send the shipment by water. Thus, Dereje now accompanies that shipment aboard the Jenivere, sworn to protect the ship, its crew, its passengers, and its cargo.
APPEARANCE
Dereje is a tall, broad-shouldered man of Garundi descent, though some of his facial features betray a probable Keleshite ancestry. His eyes are hazel, and he tends to keep his prematurely white-gray hair cropped short, or covered by a tricorne. He wears a white leather duster trimmed with gold, that while usually colored tan by dust and dirt, has managed to stay pristine during his voyage. Underneath is his leather armor, hidden in plain sight. The golden key of Abadar hangs prominently around his neck, a proud symbol of the wealth he has already gained and tithed to his church.
PERSONALITY
As a paladin of Abadar, Dereje is sworn to protect his fellow passengers from harm. He is far more gregarious than most Abadaran priests, if only because he is not a banker or taxmaster.
Despite his own humble origins, Dereje does has the habit of looking down on those less fortunate than him. Not out of meanspiritedness, but out of the genuine belief that if they worked harder, they could elevate their own status, just as he had. He does not believe in altruism, but will always help those in need regardless, confident that in doing so, he is providing them with an opportunity to better themselves.
BONUSES
Learned some secret Red Mantis fighting techniques from Sasha, granting Dereje an untyped +1 bonus on initiative checks.
