Backstory:
There were many fates in Varisia for unwanted babes. Many were cruel. Those of Chel might find themselves sacrificed to a devil or even consumed in a deviant feast. The Shoanti with their traditions and mysticism have been known to cast out children bearing marks or blemishes to die of exposure. If not broken on or under the unfeeling stones of tribal graveyards. To be simply abandoned was almost a kindness, and many a babe found themselves left in the care of traveling Varisians. This was how Chiri found her home. Alexana Cioban had been the one to find her. She was primarily a healer and mystic, and some claimed to be a witch. The woman had been surprised to find in her wagon a bundle of silk bearing Thassilonian runes, and wrapped inside a tiny babe. The child was half elf, a quiet and inquisitive babe that simply stared back at her matronly features. As she overcame her surprise and stooped to gather up the baby tiny hands reached for her braided hair, clutching it and inspecting her auburn locks. The child herself, a girl, had tiny wisps of sandy colored hair. She would later make the rueful claim the runes had been enchanted. There could be no other reason she woudl have taken in the awful little child as her own. As far as burdens went, the caravan found the child a minor one. Quiet and cheerful, many found Delin a delight to care for. She grew into a shy child, and would often keep to herself while poking about and stowing away in wagons seemingly at random. The only curious thing about her was that she could speak and eventually read Thassionian. This was discoved by the illusionist Wilfrith Gobdeye when he found her happily reading through his books on evening. That was one of the few times her curiousity earned her a good tanning. This did not stop her fascination with books and text. The feel of parchment on her fingers, and eventually the scratch of a quill across it would entrance Chiri. There were not many subjects for her study on the road, but she quickly found that understanding Thassionian opened many pages to her. So she began to study other languages, quickly working out their patterns so she could make full use of any reading offered to her. She would occasionally be asked to scribe them into common or other simpler languages. Many of these texts opened her eyes to history, magic, and curious lore that she would often bring to her adopted mother. Alexana found the girl a rapt audience, teaching her mysticism and protective arts. The girl, as always, learned quickly. Though her personal skills were lacking, she grew fast into a well educated and talented scribe and healer. Now she finds herself thinking of a life beyond being her mother's assistant and a part time scribe. Sandpoint was opening a new temple, and it had many religions. That meant many different texts. Perhaps she could find work as a scribe. |
