What's the reality behind coating your weapon with lamp oil and lighting it on fire for extra damage?

What are some neat tricks you've used in your sessions that you're proud of?

Hello Everyone,
I'm seeking assistance to determine whether or not the features mentioned stack. RAW and RAI preferrable.

The only indication that I could find that they do not stack is in this quote from source material:

Quote:
"Improved Damage (Ex): One of the eidolon's natural attacks is particularly deadly. Select one natural attack form and increase the damage die type by one step. This evolution can be selected more than once. Its effects do not stack. Each time an eidolon selects this evolution, it applies to a different natural attack."

While it explicitly states that this does not stack with itself, its context seem to imply that this rule isn't taking into account the monster feat: Improved Natural Weapon.

Anyone have any insight to this? Thanks a bunch

Hello, question in regard to familiars.
Obtain familiar specifically states: "You can obtain a familiar in the same manner as a sorcerer or wizard (see the sorcerer class description and the accompanying sidebar, page 52 of the Player's Handbook). As with a sorcerer or wizard, obtaining a familiar takes 24 hours and uses up magic materials worth 100 gp"
Is this a one time thing? If my familiar dies, can I obtain another without having to purchase another feat as long as I pay for the materials, etc? Also, I ask because the prerequisite for improved familiar / dragon familiar states this:
ability to acquire a new familiar
Or is this treated similar to summon familiar?
Any help to clarify this would be great. Thanks

Hello,
I'm working on a new race, and would like to mimic canon material in balance and functionality. I was wondering if there's any guidance anywhere in regards to how to formulate alternate favored class bonuses, specifically for balance. I could just compare other race favored class bonuses, but I'd feel more comfortable with some official writing or guidance anywhere. If none exist, how would you tackle this? Or avoid it all together? Thanks.

Good Evening Everyone,
Thought I'd give the Race Builder a go and see what I could come up with.

Considering how overpowering the half-dragon template is, I decided to go about making a quasi-dragon race, or dragon descendant. Please let me know what you think, what I should add, or take away. I'm sure this has been done before, as half-dragons are quite popular, but this is my variant idea. This is the human variant of the Dragon Descendant. I hope you like it!

Dragon Descendants

Quote:
Dragons are known to mingle in the every day lives of what they deem as lesser inhabitants. Their curiosity and fascination sometimes lead to the rare off-springs known as half-dragons. These powerful hybrids are few and far between, and quite unsettling to lay eyes on. On rare occasions, they, too, have children of their own. Half-dragons who couple with a non-dragon species still pass their bloodline on, and thus the Dragon Descendants come to existence. While their heritage grows more distant, Dragon Descendants still possess prominent traits that distinguish them as rare and extraordinary beings.

Human Dragon Descendant Racial Traits:

Quote:

+2 Strength, +2 Constitution: Human Dragon Descendants possess the strength and toughness of their draconic heritage.

+2 to One Ability Score: Human Dragon Descendants also get a +2 bonus to one ability score of their choice at creation to represent the varied nature of their human counterpart.

Medium: Human Dragon Descendants are Medium creatures and receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Normal Speed: Human Dragon Descendants have a base speed of 30 feet.

Bonus Feat: Human Dragon Descendants select one extra feat at 1st level.

Darkvision: Human Dragon Descendants can see in the dark up to 60 feet.

Energy Resistance: Human Dragon Descendants have resistance 5 to the energy type that corresponds to their dragon variety (see below).

Dragon Variety, Element

  • Black, acid
  • Blue, electricity
  • Green, acid
  • Red, fire
  • White, cold
  • Brass, fire
  • Bronze, electricity
  • Copper, acid
  • Gold, fire
  • Silver, cold

Dragon Hide: Human Dragon Descendants have thicker than normal skin, tinted slightly to the color of their dragon variety, and gain +1 natural armor bonus.

Languages: Human Dragon Descendants begin play speaking Common. Human Dragon Descendents with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic).

Alternate Racial Traits:

The following racial traits may be selected instead of the standard Human Dragon Descendant racial traits. Consult your GM before selecting any of these new options.
Quote:

Claws: Some Human Dragon Descendants are born with claws and gain two attacks. These are primary natural attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage.

Bite: Some Human Dragon Descendants possess sharp teeth capable of rending flesh, granting a natural attack that deals 1d6 points of damage.

Wings: Some Human Dragon Descendants heritage are much younger than others. Their potent bloodlines can sometimes lead to the growth of wings. While not full-sized for agile flight, these wings are powerful enough to provide a flight speed of 30 feet with clumsy maneuverability.

Breath Weapon: Some Human Dragon Descendants inherit the dragon breath similar to the one of their dragon variety. Once per day, as a standard action, the Human dragon Descendant can make a supernatural breath weapon attack that deals 2d6 points of the damage type and shape relevant to their dragon variety (see below). All creatures within the affected area must make a Reflex saving throw to avoid taking damage. The save DC against this breath weapon is 10 + 1/2 the character level + their Constitution modifier. Those who succeed at the save take no damage from the attack.

Dragon Variety, Element Shape

  • Black, acid, 50-foot line
  • Blue, electricity, 50-foot line
  • Green, acid, 50-foot line
  • Red, fire, 30-foot cone

  • Gold, fire, 30-foot cone
  • Silver, cold, 30-foot cone

Hello,
I'm pretty new to Pathfinder, but I'm coming from the world of 3.5e. One of my long-time favorite ideas presented by the WOTC was the Dragon Disciple. The idea of a gradual transformation into a completely different creature was fascinating to me. In spirit, I think this class was great, but I know there were a plethora of reasons as to why the Dragon Disciple lacked a lot of potential.

"An arcane spellcaster who has embraced his latent draconic heritage and, over the course of training and devotion, undergoes a partial transformation into a dragon."

After reading up on the Dragon Disciple PrC in the Pathfinder book, and reading up on a few posts from Pathfinder Veterans, it seems that while Pathfinder shifted a lot of the Dragon Disciple's focus toward spellcaster potential, they have totally gimped the idea of half-dragon transformation. It feels like the Dragon Disciple's draconic progression is much less literal, which killed my enthusiasm behind the character.

So I've been thinking of ways to blend the two paths (caster potential and half-dragon epicness) without overpowering the character itself, and this is what I have so far:

Quote:

- Adjust arcane spellcasting class progression to +1 every other level (loss of 2)

- Level 2: Change Dragon Bite to Claws and Bite:
At 2nd level, a dragon disciple gains claw and bite attacks (permanent). Use the values below to determine damage values.

Bite Damage (+Strength Modifier x1.5):
Small: 1d4
Medium: 1d6
Large: 1d8

Claw Damage (+Strength Modifier x1.5):
Small: 1d3
Medium: 1d4
Large: 1d6

A dragon disciple is considered proficient with these attacks. When making a full attack, a dragon disciple uses his full base attack bonus with his bite attack but takes a –5 penalty on claw attacks.

- Level 10, Choice between Dragon Apotheosis or Draconic Apotheosis:
Dragon Apotheosis
At 10th level, a dragon disciple fully realizes his draconic heritage and takes on the half-dragon template. He gains +4 to Strength and +2 to Charisma. His natural armor bonus increases to +4, and he acquires low-light vision, 60-foot darkvision, immunity to sleep and paralysis effects, and immunity to the energy type used by his breath weapon (see above).

Draconic Apotheosis
At 10th level, a dragon disciple unlocks the full power inherited by his draconic bloodline. He gains +2 to Strength and +4 to Charisma. His spellcasting class increases by +3.

- Complete removal of dragon form

In regards to trying to bring the dragon transformation back to the Dragon Disciple, What do you think? Any further adjustments? Looking for some honest feedback. Thanks guys
