Shard of Pride (Major Artifact)
Aura overwhelming illusion; CL 25th
Slot none; Weight 1 lb.
DESCRIPTION
The Shard of Pride is made of coppery horacalcum. As long as the Shard of Pride is carried, its owner can use major image as a spell-like ability once per day (at a caster level equal to the class level of the bearer), gains a +2 insight bonus on saves versus illusion spells, and gains a +2 insight bonus on all skill checks.
Curse: The owner suffers delusions of grandeur, and is sickened whenever she must serve another creature as a subordinate of any sort for as long as that arrangement persists. She cannot gain the benefit of the aid another action, nor can she take the aid another action.
The ioun stone still works in the shard (+2 Int, associated skill Knowledge: History, bonus language Thassilonian), and cannot be removed. If so, the ioun stone loses its magic, and the curse is no longer suppressed.
Background: Dareon was born into a noble family whose priorities were far different than his own. As he grew, his family's libraries only instilled in him a burning love for more and more knowledge, while all his family wanted from him was work and more babies. He had no interest in the family business, and so as a late teenager they disowned him. Out on his own for the first time, Dareon couldn't be happier. It didn't take long after the Pathfinder Lodge in Magnimar opened up for him to join. They offered everything he wanted: new knowledge, adventure, housing, money. He, in turn, offered them what they wanted: a big, strong body and a desire to explore.
When he attempted to join the Pathfinder Society, he was put to a confirmation test by the Heidmarchs to see whether he had the skills. He had the training of his noble birth behind him, and a purpose, but it wasn't enough. He failed the first time, as infiltrating a minor Magnimarian ruin alone and returning with a relic proved too much for him.
Humbly, he submitted himself to the Heidmarchs for further training. He spent months within the Lodge, receiving weapons drills from Sir Canayven, and endurance drills from Sheila. He pledged his steel to the protection of the Lodge and all that it stood for, and attempted another test. This time, he was better prepared and equipped, and when he brought home a minor relic, the Heidmarchs were pleased and formally inducted him as a member of the Pathfinders.
Now, he awaits his first real mission with zeal.
Appearance: Dareon is a big guy, and he uses that to his advantage when he can. He's a fighter, and isn't often seen without a weapon or two at his belt. He's got short blonde hair with a bit of bangs, and has a fairly plain-looking face, but an impressive body. He carries a record-book with him for the purpose of putting down the things that he accomplishes. He wears a well-made steel breastplate over fine noble's clothing, and still wears the signet ring of his noble House (for the social benefits).
Personality: Dareon lacks social graces, and he knows it and doesn't care. If somebody is offended by something he says, that's their own problem. All he really cares about are results, and the results that concern him are the gaining of new knowledge. He's a pretty typical Pathfinder, and adheres to the guidelines strictly.
