Caelin is a somewhat short and chubby-cheeked lad, clearly not quite having grown out of his baby fat and maybe having a few inches left to grow yet. Despite his craftsman attire and apparent profession, he doesn't have the telltale muscles or forge-tan of a blacksmith, and he has an intelligent and cultured manner about him. He enjoys reading, study, and the act of crafting, but wishes that there was some easier way to go about it than constant hammering and smelting and whatnot... Caelin can be somewhat absent-minded and oblivious, and is often distracted by minutia (and yes, he's a perfectionist with his work). He's a pretty genial and friendly guy overall, though, with patience as long as the Rawrn River.
Background:
Alistair Ferrier is well-known as a high-ranking advisor in King Theodoric's court, having worked his way up from common roots to be a commandeering figure in the capital. His young wife, Caelianna, was a frail soul, who sadly passed away during the birth of their only son, Caelin (named in memory of his mother). The boy was raised in opulence, but strictly, his no-nonsense father throwing himself into his work to drown his sorrows—and having plans for his son to join him in the executive as soon as he was qualified. However, it turned out that fate would have other plans for the young Ferrier boy.
His father paid rather exorbitant fees for the best wizards in Bernhold to tutor Caelin from a young age, although he had little talent for the more subtle courtly arts Alistair had hoped for. Instead, Caelin developed a reputation for accidentally summoning things from his daydreams while pretending to pay attention and quietly skipping class by literally teleporting himself through the walls of the library. He learned of magic and history and worlds beyond ken, and yet found himself bored by the most of them. However, there was one thing that really captured the young mage's imagination... the tales of ancient and powerful artefacts created by master craftsmen of yore.
Alistair began to personally tutor his son in the ways of the court when Caelin was 15—but the boy could not stand the stuffy and structured nature of it all. He approached his father with a request to instead pursue his own desires—research and crafting—but Alistair would have nothing of it. After a loud and heated argument, Caelin realised that his father would never be able to accept that he had his own path in life awaiting him... and so Caelin left, leaving behind a lengthy letter condemning his father's stubbornness but wishing him all the best in life to come.
Caelin left Bernhold, eventually landing in a small town a few days travel from the city where he was able to obtain work as an apprentice blacksmith. Of course, as a magic-user raised in luxury, he wasn't exactly the most suited for heavy and hard forge work, and spent a lot of time being made fun of by the other apprentices of the forge. Smith Dorrick was a patient man, though, and gradually Caelin learned to use his magic and his cunning instead of relying on brawl and muscle. That said... he was often the one sent to neighbouring towns to sell their wares. He wondered if Smith Dorrick wasn't simply taking pity on him...
He's currently on one of those journeys, this time heading back to Bernhold for the first time since he left a couple of years ago. Loaded up in his donkey cart is a selection of Dorrick's horseshoes, ready to hand off to a certain dealer in the city. But perhaps something exciting would happen soon to break him free of his life's doldrums and let him join the ranks of master craftsmen as he so desired...
