Cadeyrn hails from the lands of Lloegyr, though he left there as a toddler.
Lloegyr is a shambles; a people living in the ruins of their ancestors. Fine stone villas dot the landscape, but nobody knows how to repair them properly, so stone walls are patched with daub & wattle, and tile roofs are filled in with thatch. Serious metalworking knowledge has been lost, making weapons, armor, and even tools into priceless heirlooms. To make matters worse, the rich farmland and generally pleasant weather have made it appealing to a large, and growing, group of outsiders who have decided to forcibly settle themselves there.
Lloegyr's people are hardy, strong, and stubborn. But they lack the numbers, skill at arms, and military equipment to stave off invasion. They can slow it, even reclaim land periodically, but those who look ahead clearly know that they will lose one day. Not for a few more years yet, but within another decade.
Cadeyrn's parents sent him away, as a toddler, as many parents have done. Every child, every cripple, every elderly person they send to cities like Danel is a plea for help. So far, those pleas have gone unanswered. But it's also a chance for the children, the old, and the injured to live a better life. Cadeyrn has only the faintest memories of Lloegyr; he grew up with his mother's cousins (whom he calls "aunt" and "uncle", on a farm just outside Danel proper. He spent most of his free time wandering the woods and hills.
Cadeyrn follows the god Garanhir, who is known as a powerful, but reluctant warrior. Legends tell of how Garanhir defeated hundreds to defend his lands, in wars and raids, but never struck back. Most of Caderyn's knowledge of the god comes from the letters his parents sent to him; his family in Danel has little interest in the faith. But for Cadeyrn it is a profound facet of his life. All the moreso because of how the birthmark on his right upper arm seems similar to part of Garanhir's holy symbol; Cadeyrn had a tattoo of the holy symbol build around that birthmark.
