The light-hearted halfling looks up at the dusky-skinned warrior woman. As if reading her thoughts, Brand wrinkles his nose and furrows his brows. "O' yea, win I single-'andedly faced de demon-spawn skeleton an' laid it low. Course, dat dint go teh well fer me, either... Dare moight a been one sarcophagus left?"

trying to search back through old posts and find it now...

Brand had been enjoying dismantling the sequence of traps when the bat on the statue animated. "Blast it all te 'ell, let's slautta it!" And lunging forward, the diminutive warrior tries to score a wound or two on the flying rodent.

with a 4 hour duration, it should still be active. And that makes my AC 21, causing both those attacks to miss... hazaa!

Brand miraculously slips through the two deadly strikes at him, and smirks as he does. Not liking the scenario he finds himself in, the diminutive rogue decides to divide his attention between the two gnolls, hoping to down the wounded gnoll and injure the other.

With the web removed, Brand darts forward and lunges at the nearest gnoll.

That attack was made assuming it will take a move action to get into range to attack, and that I am not flanking with anyone. Should either a full attack and/or flanking situation be possible, I would be happy to roll more dice...

My apologies, for some reason I was thinking a grappled target was denied their dex against non-grappled opponents. I stand corrected. Not that it matters much with my Nat 1 for an attack roll...

Running along with the hoard of elves, Brand surprises his taller companions as he keeps pace with them. Drawing in close, he takes a swing at one of the restrained dog-men.

as a target effected by Web is considered grappled, that would mean they are denied their Dex to AC, granting me sneak attack!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Apologies for my sporadic posting the last week. Between catching up from my time away, a surprise visit by our VP, and the pre-holiday shenanigans, work has been absolutely crazy. Think I have everything all caught up and attended to, so hopefully its back to normal for me!

Brand gives a cross-eyed glance at his companions who are focusing on the blind gnolls rather than the one still posing a legitimate threat. Luckily the chamber is small, and with so many allies in close, it takes Brand but a quick step to put him in a flanking position across the lone non-blind gnoll while also allowing him to strike one of the blinded gnolls.

Taking advantage of catching their foes unaware, Brand rushes forward, thrusting a brutal jab at one of the gnolls.

Thanks to everyone for baring with my absence. Traveling home today, did a LOT of chasing around to see family (on both sides) over the past week. It was a good time, if incredibly chaotic.

@GM Parrot I will post some RP for Bristleback and Sawen here in discussion to wrap up the scenes before we headed back to the dungeon. No reason to clutter the gameplay thread with out-of-timeline posts.

@Anzath I would recommend dropping the Str to 17 and bumping the Dex to 14. Increases AC, Refl, and Init, plus grants an additional AoO via what I will assume will be his 3rd level feat of Combat Reflexes (trip build?). Also, perhaps a breastplate or chainmail for armor (AC+6 vs +4)?

Since the party departed Zelkor's Ferry and Brand wished a tender goodbye to his bonny lass, he'd been a decidedly more muted halfling. Indeed, while talkative, his typical devil-may-care attitude has been strangely absent, and he has seemed to be lost in thought at times. Clearly, the rogue's new role as a fiance and future tavern owner have drawn his attention elsewhere.

Yet as the party descends into the dungeon, a spark seems to re-emerge in the little rascal's demeanor, and standing beyond the door holding back an as-yet-unknown growling beast, a rye smile crosses his face. "Time fer a bit o' trouble, if'n ye ask me! I kanno be deh gud lil lad all de time..."

Damn, lost my post from Sunday it would seem. Rewriting to get back on track

Brand uses the few days in Riddleport much as his companions do: causing a little trouble, sharing a few stories, teaching Tragershen his native tongue, and tracking down some much needed equipment. After having to assume the role of front-line warrior with the departure of Hakram, Lolly, Chases Moonlight, and Joden, Brand is determined to find a set of armor, one of exceptional craftsmanship, that he has only heard of in drunken boasts from warriors and thieves alike. Mithral they say is an otherworldly metal, that both the elves and dwarves have learned the secrets of crafting into mail as light and flexible as normal clothes, yet it is able to turn aside weapon blows with ease.

In addition, during his lessons with Tragershen, he will discuss the mage's offer of enchantments with him. In Halfling "Indeed, these encounters of late have been very dangerous. I have managed to replace the goblin's leathers with something a bit more resilient. That said, I have heard tell of an amulet that can harden your skin itself to weapons. Would you be willing to craft such an item for me?" During his training Tragershen has noted, among other things, that Brand speaks quite clearly in his native tongue.

Finally, he will seek out an enclave of his kin. There is always one in every major city, hidden in some forgotten neighborhood. There he seeks a few things, including his people's travel food, and gifts for his bride-to-be and her father. For Bristleback he seeks out a bottle of the fabled Greybottom's Dragon Punch Whiskey, an exceptional production of an already unique halfling spirit. For Sawen, he has something special in mind...

purchases:

Yes, I realize the mithral shirt is the same AC bonus as the studded +1, but as it has no enchantment on it yet, it will allow it to be upgraded further as we progress. Plus, a small suit weighs only 5 lbs.
mithral chain shirt - 1100 gp
materials for amulet of natural armor +1 - 1000 gp
wandermeal x120 - 1.2 gp
dragon punch whiskey - 50 gp (normally 10 gp, figure x5 for an especially refined version)
guard dog (Valhund) - 125 gp (normally 25 gp, x5 for a top-breed specimen)
I sell off my old masterwork studded leather, standard half price: +87.5 gp

536.3 gp remaining, added to wealth

Brand accepts Sawen's greeting with quite the rudy blush - he might have even turned into a tomato! At the young lady's plee that they stay in town until the next full moon, he smiles as he strokes he face. "Ah, lass, but wut kind o' friend wud I be if'n I let me allies go back in wit out me protection?! I mean, duh ye tink dey kin take care of demselves? But, lass, 'ave no fear. I know it's a bit early, but I tracked down a roight proper weddin' gift fer ye. It may seem strange, but among me people, dis is considered a most noble present. An', even when I be off raisin' a ruckus, ye'll no longer be alone." Brand whistles, and a spunky diminutive dog comes running into the tap room. "Dis is Aegis. 'e's a Venhoun, a breed o' shepherd an' guard dog kept by me people. An' dare gud wit lil'uns too." He throws in a devious smirk with the last comment.

I figure the Vallhund would make sense for a halfling's dog

After (hopefully) getting to witness Sawen's excitement at the gift, he smiles and turns to Bristleback. "Now, I know ye are deh proprietor o' dis fine establishment an' 'ave no doubt enjoyed countless libations, but dis is a rare whiskey among me people, an' seein' as 'ow ye are now me people, well, I tawt dis made sense. Just, be careful, it's got one 'ell o' a punch!"

I definitely agree the NPC/Hireling pricing needs to be adjusted, but the chart goes up exponentially, and starts at a point (CR 1/8) that doesn't even exist on the NPC list you linked (the Foot Soldier, a human warrior 1, is CR 1/3). Given CR 1/3 is the baseline for a level 1 NPC class, I would assume that is what is listed as a "skilled hireling", and could use that as the base of the chart (CR 1/3 = 2 gp).

I know in older editions it was npc level x the base pay, which would mean a human warrior 3 (CR 1) would be 6 gp (for PC class, move their level up by 1, as is done for calculating CR). Now, that doesn't sound like much, but given the average person in a fantasy setting makes 2 sp a day, that is 30x their income (or a a person in today's USA making $1740 per 8-hr day vs a person making minimum wage totaling $58 for 8-hr day). Per the NPC Codex, that would be an experienced guard, a journeyman craftsman or shopkeeper, or a minor ranking religious official or noble. I wish our police officers and soldiers were so well compensated with a $450,000 annual income!

Unique skills can then add extra costs, and conversely negotiating a longer contract, or a share of spoils, could lower or completely eliminate wages.

Just my 2 copper on the subject.

male Halfling Rogue (unc) 3 / Bard (arch) 1 || HP: 34/34 || AC:20 (T:15 / FF:16) || CMD:17 || Fort:+2 Refl:+8 Will:+4(+2 fear) || Init:+4 || Perception:+10/11 Sense +5, adpt luck 3/3, arch luck 7/7

Actually, given how I have somehow become a "frontline" fighter as a halfling rogue, I threw the goblin armor in the pile to sell, and am hoping to get a chainshirt +1.... and if I am really lucky, perhaps it will be made of mithril! Yes, it will only increase my AC by 1, but that is 5% less hits! I also left the skull and clock in the pot. They are fun items, and would go well in a trophy room one day, but right now his focus is on surviving. He's about to be married.

So in the end, the only spoils Brand is keeping is the Traveler's Anytool (250 gp).

I also did some cleaning on the spreadsheet, started categorizing things and the like.

For a PnP game I have a rather elaborate google doc excel file. I might make a copy and convert our loot for this game over into it. It works rather well, if I do say so myself.

Glad you enjoyed. I just started writing and it kept coming!

still in Zelkor's Ferry:

In her joy, Sawen picks Brand up from the bar as she kisses him, much to the jubilation of all watching. When she finally ends the kiss and sets him down, he wobbles with stars in his eyes. Though a man, the lad had clearly never been kissed like that before!

When Sawen returned with the ring and slid it onto his finger, his expression turned to one of surprise. Yet, it was not the surprised look of one looking to escape the situation that had just occurred, but rather, of confusion in the reality of a moment that was never to exist in his life. The ring was obviously too large for his finger, so he tore a shred of cloth from his pouch and looked it inside the base of the ring to make it fit. Then he smiled back at her, and somehow, while still standing on the bar, grabbed Sawen and half dipped her into another kiss. It was an amusing sight, or would have been, were the emotions not so visibly genuine.

In the moments after, as Bristleback jubilantly shook Brand's hand, the young halfling smiled up at he giant of a man. "Oi, I'll be back alroight! Got a bride teh marry now! Wait, so... does dis mean I git teh call ye Pah?" He chuckles as he asks the big innkeep.

-----

In the morning, Brand finds Bristleback privately for a few moments. "Sir, umm, ye warned me about deh dreams. I figured dey'd be, well, scary, or sumting. But, maybe it didno' work fer me. I tink I was sum animal, in a bee-utiful forest. An', I was 'ungry. An' dare were mushrooms! I cud smell 'em, like I've ne'er smelled 'em 'efore! It was glorious! An' I dug 'em up, an' ate a whole lot o' 'em." Brand abruptly stops, realizing he was getting excited. It was strange, but so real, and delicious... Shaking his head, he looked back up at the innkeep. "Is dat okay? I didno' fail sum family test, did I?"

At the Inn in Riddleport

Brand had been rather jovial during the ship's journey to Riddleport, even moreso than his normal self. He spent a good deal of time telling tales of their escapades to the sailors, who no doubt enjoyed the entertainment.

Drinking a big mug of ale as his companions determine what all to sell, Brand looks up at the comments made in his direction. "Tank ye, Tal. I'm a gettin' married?! I dunno if I believe it. An' Aurora, I confess, I was surprised by de ring, I'll confess teh dat. I like deh lass, roight propah, an' was 'opin' fer sum kind o' future wit 'er. But, I meen, 'ad ye asked me when we left 'ere a few weeks past if I saw meself gettin' 'itched soon, or ever, I wudda laughed at ye. But den, dat's cause a me past. I was born a slave, an' lived as gutter trash, dare's no 'ope in life fer one such as me teh live deh normal life. But de lass, she sees in me sumting, an' well, maybe I ken be dat man one day. She knows me goals, an' proposed all de same. So, I guess I'm gettin' married in two moons. Ye all best do yer darnedest teh keep me alive, lest ye face Bristleback's ire!"

Apologies, fell asleep last night while writing the first half of this post, so it is a little out of timeline

still in Zelkor's Ferry:

Brand had been in the tavern during Sawen's outburst, and clearly caught her father's gaze on him. He decided not to step into the situation that evening, and was rather subdued compared to other days.

The next morning, well after the rising hours when the tavern room was quiet, Brand found Sawen. After a bit of playful flirting, he climbed up on a bar stool and sat down on the bar, putting him at eye level with the young lady. "Sawen, lass, ye tink I came 'ere fer a bit o' shiny gold, o' magical rings teh adorn me 'ands? Sure, I tell gran' stories eh entertain yer patrons, it's in me nature. But a treasure 'untin' glory seeker? I tought ye tought better o' me den dat. I cum from nottin'. Me mah an' pah, dey were slaves in Cheliax. An' I was born teh dem dare. We served cruel masters, dat consorted wit devils an' dare ilk. Me pah, one day 'e angered deh master's son - gave 'im to a pet monster teh watch 'im be torn apart. Me mah fled wit me dat night, an' after sum time, made it teh Westcrown. She 'oped teh book passage on a vessel leavin' the accursed place. Dat never 'appened. Took a knife in deh gut. I was seven, an' alone on deh streets of deh City o' Twoilight."

Brand pauses for a moment, cocking his head but still looking at Sawen. With a long sigh, he continues. "Somehow, I made me own way in dose years. Beggin' an' scavengin', an' hidin' in lil holes no one ken follow ye down. I got bigger, well a bit, an' ran wit a gang o' teeves, til dey got pinched. By den, I could manage well on me own, an' 'ad never liked dare tactics, so I kept teh meself mostly. Shared me spoils with deh young lads an' lasses like I'd been, de urchins an' orphans. But still, deh rulers o' Westcrown were like me old masters, cruel devil worshippers who plagued deh lil people. I cudn't change dat, least, not yet. But maybe, if I got a lot better at sneakin' an' fightin', an' I found some friends, maybe den I cud make a dif'rence. So I set out teh do just dat. Managed teh win me way on teh a ship dat 'appened teh be 'eadin' teh Magnimar, an' off I went."

Brand scratches the back of his head, then chuckles a bit. "Got meself in teh a scrap or two pretty quickly dare, an' was out o' dat city in a flick. Ran in teh sum 'adventurers' in a roadside tavern on a rainy noight. Dey were 'eadin' up teh Riddleport, an' from dare were plannin' to raid deh temple o' sum demon-cult. Well, sounded like roight propah trainin' fer me plan, an' a few adventurers brave enough teh face demon cultists in dare own temple, well dey cud be roight good friends. Dat temple... well, it ended up bein' Rappan Attuk, an' de folks I arrived in town wit were dose adventurers. Sad teh see so many of dem gone, only Aurora an' Tragershen from de original company are left. It's terrifyin' down dare, it is. But, I must face it. Fer in it's terror, it can make me de man I need teh become. An' if, in preparin' teh face deh lords o' Cheliax, I kin destroy Orcus' un'oly temple-dungeon an' its many 'orrors, den so be it. Dare's no place in Golarion fer such evils."

With a smirk, he reaches up and touches her face. "But lass, ye need no' fear, cause... I ain't dyin'. I got far teh much teh do. An', I'd 'ave ye by me side trough it, if ye can stan' me messy mop o' 'air."

Aboard The Laughing Dolphin

Brand leans against the rail of the vessel as they talk. "Oi, I tink yer roight. Dare 'ounds be chasin' us down dare in deh water! Look at dare teeth!" He smiles while pointing down to the sharks swimming around the side of the vessel. "In all seriousness, if demon-worshippers be anyting like devil-worshippers, I'd 'ave teh agree. Dare all a roight dirty lot, an' we need teh keep our wits about us!"

His strength continuing to return to him, Brand re-enters Zelkor's Ferry like a conquering hero. His already lively personality rises to a new level, with boastful yet eloquent storytelling shared each night at the tavern. From his flying assault with Joden on the bandits who had taken their camp to fearlessly facing down the demon-cursed black skeleton, or disarming the magical trap and riding the falling block to recovering the glowing skull from the pool, Brand accents each moment to show his bravery, heroism, and unending luck. He uses Gelver's mad rants and reenactments surprisingly well to accentuate his storytelling, and seems to be throwing more than a little charm at Sawen as she flirts with him in turn.

Perhaps surprisingly to the others, Brand's stories also present each of them in a heroic light, from the timely arrival of Bedlam charging into battle against the worgs to Tragershen blinding half the would-be robbers with a single spell. Though he paints himself at the center of his stories, the others note that he never claims another of his companion's deeds as his own, and gives them all great praise and honor in the stories.

Perhaps to Anzath's great displeasure, her lecturing of Brand regarding his comments about her and Tal seem to have the opposite effect, as he whispers of a budding romance between the two at several points in his stories, though never in any vulgar terms (nor does he in fact mention either of them fleeing in fear). Quite the opposite, he paints them as two kindred souls, both of whom lost their allies to the horrors of Rappan Athuk, and yet both found their way to the same company, and perhaps to an understanding companion in one another.

At some point during Brand's daily wanderings, he likely finds himself drawn into one of Aurora's lectures on faith and magic. He chuckles, poignantly replying, "Aye, ye cen lurn magik throo years o' study, or ye cen devote yerself to a god, an' maybe day will answer ye prayers. Or, ye cen get lucky just playin' wit magiks, an' POOF, be able teh cast spells, like me!" On cue, he waves his hands theatrically and touches a lingering wound on his arm, causing it to immediately heal up!

Well den, good day teh ye!" He slips his swords into their sheaths and retrieves a piece of fruit from his pouch to begin eating.

His elven companion's vision returned, he gives one of the bandits a soft kick in the rear as they scramble away. He glances over his shoulder as they continue their journey to Zelkor's Ferry. Turning to the others, he shakes his head. "Damn, bested by an invisible witch! I ne'er e'en saw 'er..."

Brand frowns as the negotiations transpire, but stays himself from charging the nearest cluster of bandits. Instead, he offers a few words, hopefully well-timed to assist Aurora's place. His ploy having allowed Brand to slip into the woods and disappear, he makes his way alongside Anzath to an outer member of their would-be ambushers. Happy to be here! And the busier I am, the more I need to play. It helps me relax from the stresses of work. I am having a lot of fun with Brand. Trying to type in a Cockney accent is definitely interesting, but home it is coming through in an entertaining way for everyone. And as for his mindset, well, he is a street urchin blessed with uncanny luck, and a slightly less than average intelligence, so it's act first and think later...

@GM Parrot, glad you are enjoying teaching. I miss it, though admittedly not the bureaucracy. And I have no interest in going back into teaching in North Carolina - definitely not a pro-education state.

@Tragershen, a Bavarian themed alpine town? Sounds like a nice place to have "down the street"...

While the mace, resized, would give me a magic weapon to wield, it would not benefit from my roguely Finesse training and thus not benefit from my dex-to-damage as short swords do. As such, it would spend most of it's time on my belt as a backup weapon.

@Anzath, if you are going to actively use it, I would not oppose you keeping it. At some point, we should start to consider wealth distribution, and it may make sense to sell it so everyone gets a fair share. If nothing else, use it for now.
