Character Background & Description

Spoiler:
His parents did not name him Beren Kemble. His original name is lost to time. He was born in a small nameless village on the border of Droaam and Breland. Which country you ask? Depending on what year of the war you are referring to, and who you are asking, it could be either. This village lay in a hidden cove at the edge of the Silver Lake. The inhabitants stayed neutral throughout the war. Their hope was to go unnoticed and the war to end soon.

Unfortunately, when Beren was very young-just learning to walk, jump, and climb, the village was caught in the middle of a border skirmish between Breland's Westwind Riders from Fort Orcbone and a band of orcs from Droaam. Breland's calvary overpowered the orcs this day and chased them far back into Droaam. Although a nameless battle according to war historians, many lives were lost and the innocent village was destroyed.

A few riders stayed behind and did not pursue the enemy. One of those riders was Duran Kemble, and he found something. Out from the burning homes, slaughtered livestock, ruined soil, and decaying bodies crawled a lone survivor, a male shifter of maybe two years of age. Duran, a strong but compassionate man, lifted the young shifter boy up on his mighty warhorse Kelgrag and took him back to Fort Orcbone. Knowing full well that if he did not, the young shifter would perish.

For the next few years, life was not easy for the young shifter. Growing up in a military environment dominated by humans, half-elves, and a few halflings covered with unique tattoos was confusing. Duran showed great compassion though. He named the shifter Beren and when he was old enough to make personal decisions he took Duran's surname as well. To earn his keep, he scrubbed floors and cleaned up after the soldiers in the mess hall. In return, he was given the basics. Also, he recieved a decent education. He learned to speak & write in common, elven, and orc (the fort's main enemy). He was lectured in the teachings of the Sovereign Host. He excelled at learning about his natural surroundings, and loved to look at maps. He never truly understood etiquette, but he tried which his tutors found acceptable.

Eventually with age, he was givin less mundane tasks. The fort commanders noticed how quick and agile he was and made him a message runner inside the fort. One particular officer , Lt. Kuven Lonn, took a particular liking to Beren after a job well done. He gave Beren the responsiblity of polishing his armor and weapons. One day, Kuven noticed that Beren was taking a particular interest in his longbow. It did not take much prodding for an archery lesson. On Beren's very first shot, he was almost perfect from 60ft away. Astounded by his immediate skill, Kuven began Beren's martial training. He trained on many weapons but was fascinated with the longbow. The delicate accuracy and power astonished young Beren. He decided that one thing he would like to do is make his own longbow. He also became interested in replacing a shield in his left arm for a secondary weapon. His has not mastered this fighting style, but he practices every day.

Age 15 and confident with his martial progress, Beren requested a post on the wall to use his skills in battle if Orcbone was attacked. This request was denied by the fort commander, Lord Veirner ir'Tajar. The reason for this is that Beren is considered a non-combatant because he is not a registered soldier in the Brelish army with any formal training. He is also too young.

Disgruntled, Beren decided to leave Orcbone. After weeks of planning his escape, late one night he snuck out determined to make it on his own. Traveling towards the Graywall Mountains, he shifted to find some food. Instead of picking up the scent of wildlife though, the scent of orc aggitated his nose. Stalking the band, he discerned that this was a sneak attack planned on Orcbone. Running back to the fort ahead of the orcs, he raised the alarm just in time. The guards were shocked to see Beren outside the walls but allowed him entry and told him to help man the wall. They needed every cabable body until off-duty reinforments arrived.

Thanks to Beren, Orcbone staved off a huge attack and was defended properly. Now seeing Beren's potential, Lord Veirner ir'Tajar awarded him a post of scout for the Westwind Riders. Fulfilling this new role, most of his time was now spent outside Orcbone scouting the surrounding terrain and the Breland/Droaam border. He even had countless forays into Droaam sneaking into orc camps to study them. He observed their behaviors, fighting styles, and hierarchy. Beren knew that they were the enemy and he generated pure hatred and disdain for them while mastering their weaknesses.

When the war ended, Beren continued his role as scout. He would wake every day with stretching exercises and a two-weapon style routine. He was still sloppy with this style but saw improvment everyday. The Breland/Droaam border still had hositilities despite the Treaty of Thronehold. He spent his time guarding the border and protecting innocents from poaching, banditry, and illegal encroachment. He also gained a good reputation with the simple villages that sprouted up along the border. Beren helped the less fortunate by hunting and feeding them through rough winters or crop disasters. Some of these villages were even in Droaam. He figured that if the Brelish considered parts of Droaam Breland, then these were Brelish villagers.

On a now infrequent visit to Orcbane, Beren could tell that something was amiss as soon as he reached the gate. The gate guards, men he knew for years and knew him, seized his weapons before allowing him entry. Upon walking through the fort, there was a bustle of activity. Questioning the first availble person, he found out that an assisination just took place and the murderer escaped. To Beren's complete dread, the victim was his mentor Kuven Lonn. He rushed to the scene of the crime, Kuven's living quarters. In the room lay Kuven, his stomach torn apart, blood everywhere. Beren shifted and the smell of orcblood permeated the air mixed with human fluids. The trail was still warm but fading. Beren quickly followed, grabbing his supplies on the way and promising to bring this orc scum to justice.

The trail led to Sharn where it was lost in the midst of all the smells. When Beren first laid eyes on the City of Towers, his jaw dropped and he was overwhelmed. He was determined though, and after following some clues, he booked passage on a ship to Xen'drik and the main port city of Stormreach. A bit on edge because his mission was stalled, he did find comfort in a friendship made with a human female named Velessa Marr. They shared some meals and conversation together, and he learned alot about city life during the voyage.

As the ship docked into port, Beren was determined to visit every tavern and establishment until he picked up the stench of the murdering fiend. He was going to start with the first tavern he saw and move methodically through the city. The access ramp was lowered, and he set foot on dry land. To his right he found his first destination. Floating in the harbor, two docks down was the Tethered Wench. A seemling less than respectable establishment. A perfect place to start his search.

"Valessa, it has been nice meeting you. My mission starts here. Are you sure you want to set foot in such an unsettling environment?"

Physical Description:
Beren is short by shifter standards but lean and muscular He has long-coarse black hair on his head (pulled back and combed when he feels compelled by the limited ettiquette he has learned otherwise wild and unkempt), bright green eyes, and a darker skin with a redish hue barely seen through a shaggy black coat of hair.

Personality Traits:
From years of growing up in a human nurturing environment with formal education, Beren is unlike many shifters. He is hard-working, determined, altruistic, eager to please, charitable, chivalrous, confident, curious, honest, independant, methodical, sociable (by shifter standards), sincere, tactful, but also vengeful.
