Backstory:

Spoiler:
Berel was born as the third son to a minor member of the noble house of Zenderholm. His position at the very end of any possible claim to an inheritance, as well as his somewhat slow learning made it very clear he would never amount to anything even remotely resembling a position of power in the backstabbing world of politics.

Instead, he was groomed to be a peacemaker and face to present. Not someone with the right to make any actual decisions, but someone to present them in ways that were agreeable. More agreeable than many a "real" politician would be. Accordingly, great focus was placed on making him "socially presentable", with immaculate grooming, fine clothes and the best food the pantry had to offer.

But like so many boys, once he started to become a man himself, all this work was undone in a fit of rebellion. After seeing a Hellknight Commander in her glorious battle gear, her helmet under her arm, and firey hair flailing in the wind, he was instantly enamored with the harsh image, and finally was able to threaten, cajole and otherwise worm his way to his family allowing him to petition the Order of the Nail for membership.

It was the worst mistake of his life. While the order whipped his already considerably gifted body into top shape, the laws of Hell were appalling to him, and seeing them executed so ruthlessly just made him feel numb, and before long he began loathing himself for having any part in this.

Still, his ambition and the knowledge that turning his back on the Order would make all the objections of his family right kept him going. First from another novice, later direction from Lamm he received his balm... Shivers. His dependence grew daily, and his achievements crashed just as swiftly. What sealed his fate was the discovery of his stash, carefully hidden in his bunk.

He was sent home in disgrace, with his family not only paying a considerable fine to the city, but a much larger amount of hush-money to cover the whole sordid affair up. He was kept on a stipend, just so he would have no incentive to further cause problems.

He nearly killed himself with Shivers three weeks after this. Yet in the twisted dreams he found himself face to face with... himself. He saw the wreck he had become. How close he was to dying. How it would only take one step away from himself to end it all, and bring oblivion. Yet he could not turn away from his own face, could not abandon himself.

As he watched himself, he saw his features melting. Becoming ever more like the Dawnflower, until he could no longer tell if it was truly himself, or if it was the goddess. He does not know if it really was her, of if his mind constructed something to hold on to, while fighting back the death inside his body. But he says he does not care much.

Redemption is possible, even in the worst of situations. Everything has a chance to change. And he has to bring that chance to Ghedren Lamm. One chance to look into the face of all the misery he brought, and finally see through himself. But only one. He knows it is possible, for he has never since even touched a glass of wine, let alone a drug. Anyone can change. But those unwilling to do so, who do harm to others... these must be prevented from working their evil on the innocent.
