Backstory:
Baldor Fortstrong began his life in a Dwarven mining colony north of Silverkeep and Goldcrest. Originally given the duty of defending the colony from attackers he quickly discovered a knack for using fire magic. However, Baldor quickly became bored with the colonies constant focus on mining and was fascinated by the world around him. Between that and his gruff nature even by dwarven standards Baldor found himself at odds with most of the colony. As such his father, Horfth, tasked Baldor with taking the precious gems and minerals from the colony to the markets at Silverkeep and Goldcrest with his older half-brother Jorad. Both brothers were competent fighters although Jorad far exceeded Baldor in both experience and strength. Jorad was one of the few in the colony who tolerated and actually enjoyed Baldor’s company having gotten to know Baldor and his gruff mannerisms.
Wandering the areas north of Silverkeep and Goldcrest with Jorad, helping the colony at the same time, and learning from Jorad were some of the happiest years of Baldor’s life. Loyal to none but the colony they went to whichever city offered them the better price at the time. They had various adventures occasionally getting into trouble but always pulling through. At one point they ran into a dragon that demanded the valuables they had on them in order to allow them passage. Needless to say Jorad slew the mighty fiend educating Baldor at the same time and giving him pointers on how to use a double sided weapon while driving the spear end of Gerrut’s Fury deep into the beast’s skull. Collecting the hide of the beast Jorad then took it into the market with them in Silvercrest and without Baldor’s knowledge had it made into breastplate armor for his younger brother and surprised him with it in front of the entire colony on their return.
Upon their next run into the markets in town things had begun to heat up between Silverkeep and Goldcrest. A few days before they arrived at their destination they encountered a Goldcrest patrol. The patrol asked them who they were and what they were doing there. Upon discovering they were miners the patrol then asked to which of the two powers they sold their wares. When Jorad replied that they had no favorites and went to whichever one offered the best price at the time, the patrol became suspicious and encircled them. One, the leader of the group, an elven archer who introduced himself as Ilvan Silverleaf became aggressive pointing to Baldor’s armor and saying that they were clearly not only trading with Silverkeep but purchasing goods from them as well, as the make of the armor was clearly from a Silverkeep smith. Ilvan then demanded that all the goods they were planning on trading were to be traded with Goldcrest. Jorad replied with “Over my dead body will I be told where I can and cannot trade” to which Ilvan replied “with pleasure” and all of the patrol drew their weapons and became openly hostile. At a nod from Jorad, Baldor began his most complicated spell yet causing an area 15 feet across to erupt in flame and burn all the guards in the area. Jorad then immediately set about wreaking havoc with Gerrut’s Fury in the confusion. In a matter of less than a minute the entire patrol of 8 men except for Ilvan who could be seen fleeing through the trees, had been subdued. As Jorad wiped his weapon clean and turned to Baldor he said “well that will teach them to order us around won’t it la—“ Jorad lets out a long sigh as he falls to his knees and slumps over revealing the elven arrow now protruding from the base of his skull. Baldor looks up and sees Ilvan turning around at what Baldor could only imagine was the absolute maximum range of his weapon and fleeing out of sight.
Baldor goes over to his half-brother’s body, his best friend in the world now dead, and quietly buries him. After he’s done he slings Gerrut’s Fury over his shoulder and swears an oath that he will one day see Ilvan dead at the hands of that weapon. He then begins the journey back to the colony. Not one to bandy words Baldor walks up to his father tosses the bag of goods they were suppose to sell and says “We never made it. Jorad’s dead. Killed by a Goldcrest Patrol demanding we sell our goods there. I am leaving to make them pay.”
Baldor then headed to Silverkeep where we now catch up with him as the call to arms goes out throughout Silverkeep…
