The Zenju are a patriarchal people, but the patriarchal head of their family passed early in young Bahari’s life. His mother, Zuri, was a very strong-willed woman and saw no reason to replace the man she had loved with all her heart just to appease the sensibilities of others.
So Bahari, his mother, and his five older sisters lived on, despite haughty pitying looks from the neighbors.

The Nyukis (their last name) ran a small glassworks called Nyukimji (translates to Bee Town), or occasionally called the HiveWorks. They specialized in glass that followed the geometric patterns of bumblebee hives, which they also kept hives of and sold honey from. His sisters were amazing artists when it came to glass. Brash but sweet, playfully dotting on their youngest brother all his life. He was not as artistic, though he understood the craft well enough, so he grew into the manual labor parts of glassworking, which there are plenty, and even more so in taking care of the Bees.

A calm, slightly outcast but very happy life. Unfortunately, time moves on, his sisters found love, his mother grew older, tired of being alone. Bahari’s place in the universe grew uncertain. One day while he was talking to the bees, something he did often, a stranger appeared one with a large head and a frail body, asking questions that couldn't stay in young Bahili's mind. Still, the answers must have pleased the strange one, especially the ones about Bees, because he insisted he attend the prestigious school of Magaambya.

There was a large party of siblings, their husbands, a growing horde of toddler nieces and nephews, and his Mom. He got niknaks, books, a suit of armor of all things, and hugs beyond hugs, plus a few tears. Then he was off to make his way in the world.

---

Short of stature with his body hidden under layers of light robes combined with his steady politeness (though heavily strained at times), makes Bahari easy to underestimate. His life of handling a lot of the physical aspects of glassworking has given him strength, and his mother’s insistence that all her children shall know how to defend themselves has taught him how to use it.
An additional misconception is his gender at times. A face easily referred to as comely, a body hidden under colorful flowing robes (protects from irate bees and errant flecks of hot glass, a style of dress fostered by his five older sisters heavy involvement), a gender-neutral name, and a red balm rubbed under his eyes (a family receipt to keep insects from one’s eyes, once again his sisters might have added the coloration unnecessarily).

• “Who are you?”

In a clear but respectful voice he answers “Bahili Nyuki, son of Zuri Nyuki, of Nyukimji, glassworks inspired by nature and a delicate touch.” His mom requested to mention the works at least once in a while.

• “What most interests you?”

Nature. And how it can weave into our day-to-day life to enhance instead of conflict.” He pauses then adds “Especially in regards to Bees.

• “What do you consider your greatest strength?”

He has thought about this one a lot. Five sisters have taught him to not boast about much or the onslaught of friendly teasing would descend on him. Instead of a skill or an ability, he ended up choosing something he believes in, that was tempered by his upbringing “My belief that our differences as people are the strength of a community instead of its weakness.

• “What work have you done to bolster those in and around the Magaambya before now?”

I have just reached the city recently. I have gifted the family that is allowing me to stay with them with honey and trinkets made from my own hands. I have offered my repeated thanks to all aligned gods for the opportunity to stand in front of you now. But ultimately, I have done nothing worth note for the school itself.” he lowers his head in an apologetic bow.

• “What do you seek at the Magaambya?”

Knowledge and understanding.

• “Once you have attained that which you seek, what goals do you wish to achieve?”

I do not believe I will ever be done seeking those, for there is too much to learn in a lifetime. So my goals will be to continue seeking and to help others down the same path.
