BACKGROUND
Axton Lorgenberger was born in one of the poorer districts of [City]. He never knew his mother, but his father was a socially aware man who was bitter about his economic status, and would often preach convoluted, philosophically-rich arguments to justify his career of thievery and thuggery. He swayed Axton's younger brother and his cousins with his arguments, and now there's an infamous "Lorgenberger" branch of the thieve's guild. Axton's grandmother, being a devout and practicing follower of Asmodeus, is the likely cause of Axton's father's outlook on life, but it is Axton's grandfather who saved the boy.
It was he who would comfort Axton when the abuse would get to be too much. It was he who would assure to Axton that the rest of the family was "crazy" and that he, at least, loved the boy. And one day, it was he who managed to spirit Axton away to [the City's premier/only] magical academy. Axton never figured out how his grandfather got him admitted or how he paid for it, but Axton thrived in an environment where his mind was constructively challenged and he didn't have to fear that his other family members were behind every corner. Axton worked hard and developed his critical thinking and his magical talent, and grew into a confident, capable man.
But the newly-graduated wizard never forgot the troubles of his childhood, and he never really let go, either. Surprising many of his instructors and peers, he enrolled in the city's guardsperson training program. Axton blatantly directed his inner turmoil to drive himself to succeed in the program. He wasn't as strong or as nimble as some of the other recruits, but he didn't shy away from taking a hit, and he showed that he could often use his brain to think and react quickly and to find alternate solutions to a problem that others would solve with brute force. And that was noticed.
Today, he doesn't look completely out of place patrolling the streets, but the lack of armor beneath his city guard tabard and his fox familiar following him around certainly set him apart. He is older than most of the other men and women on his beat due to his years spent at the academy, but not so old as to make anyone uncomfortable. His spells and sharp mind make him somewhat respected by the others on the force, but his bristly personality and his naked ambition to advance in rank doesn't leave him with many friends.
Description:
Axton is a tall man with light brown hair and a bristling mustache to match. He keeps his guard uniform sharp, and the fact that his armor has been replaced by the spellbook he often studies is noticed only by those who don't have his heavy crossbow aimed between their eyes.
