About Avelia Jaugaffre
She could have been a sorceress. But it was not to be.
Born to a minor retainer of House Jeggare in Westcrown, Avelia was raised in service. Her boundless curiosity about magic and natural affinity caused her no end of trouble.
Though opportunity was rare, she relished every chance to glance at a scroll or dare to speak to a Diabolist. In this her natural charm and eagerness served her well. Those who would never reveal any trivial secret to a peer or rival were disarmed by the young child curious about their trade.
By age 14 she had accumulated enough odds and ends to begin attempting magic on her own. It was then that her father discovered her stash of manuscripts and materials. Mistaking a few basic scrolls for Diabolist manuals, he grew fearful of what her life could be in the grand power struggles of Cheliax, so he sent her off with a contingent of House Jeggare to Korvosa.
The House put her to work in their harbor offices, For three years she worked as a clerk, seldom managing to pursue her magical hobbies. Over time, however, she saved enough from her pay to purchase release from her duties. Eager to explore, she traveled the civilized areas of Varisia. In Magnimar she chanced upon an ancient Elven sage.
The sage was of greatly different temperament. While Avelia had gained her knowledge of magic through intense enthusiam and risky interactions, Skerrin Maltisse had spent countless decades accumulating a wealth of knowledge. Nevertheless, she was fascinated with the old wizard and resolved to learn as much from him as possible.
Avelia is slender and ebullient. She travels in plain clothes and wears a buckler that she engraves with magic symbols and runes in her down time.
