Description: As Ashess walks into the tavern he takes an unoccupied corner booth where the lighting is low. He is mostly all black cloak. Inside the hood of the cloak are two eyes glowing green with some unknown eldritch energy. Removing his hood he is mostly a typical Tiefling (if there is such a thing). His skin is red and his hair is black including the typical facial hair that comes to a point at his chin. The horns are indeed there. Protruding from either side of his forehead they slope back before detouring around his ears like a large ram. Pulling the cloak over his shoulders reveals this Tiefling is ready for trouble. His chest and shoulders are adorned with a set of black studded leather. It is well worn but cared for. The belt around his waist carries the only offensive weapon evident. A dagger sits there. His pants are worn, dirty and muddy. The brown boots go up to his calf and appear new. More than likely either stolen or "borrowed". In his hand sits a plain old walking stick. Those green eyes look over the room like he is searching for something. He then laughs to himself and quickly gives off the appearance of boredom.

Origin: Around 84 years ago a woman died in agony giving birth to a monster. At the moment of her death the bells rang at the Temple of Asmodeus. The nursemaid, unsure what to do, took the child outside in the cold and rain. "May Desna forgive me," she said as she ran down the alley away from the child. The child screamed into the night and it's cries were soon answered by the sound of hissing and chittering teeth. The Dire Rats approached the easy meal. Just as they were about to gorge themselves on the abomination a shadow streaked down from the rooftops. A blade flashed right and then left as two Dire Rats quickly fell. The baby continued to scream in protest. The remaining rats ran away squealing. The elder Tiefling looked down and pushed the blanket to the side with a clawed finger to see what he had just rescued. "Blast! What was I thinking." He turned to walk away but before he could the baby stopped crying and looked up at him. No one knows why Pepperjack took the baby but he picked up the egg crate the baby was in and said, "Let's get you somewhere warm." The Devil's Bells rang again.

Pepperjack named the baby Tiefling Ashess, because his skin was somehow covered in dry ash and not blood which the other races are known for in child birth. Growing up in the streets and rooftops of Kintargo Pepperjack gave Ashess the best education he could. "Watch the people, see how they move about Ashess. In everything there is a pattern. Everything is relative. They have a place. Pay attention to the details. From the smallest details you can see."
"See what Pjack?"
"Everything!"
The Devil's Bells rang again.
Looking up at the Church, Ashess asked, "Tell me about the bells again father?"

One day Pepperjack approached Ashess and handed him a leather vest. "Put this on." He did as he was told. "Why do I have to wear this? It's uncomfortable! I don't like it!"
"Stop pouting! It was expensive. This is armor. Not big and clumsy like the plates those stupid Hellknights wear but quick and fast. Get used to it! Learn to overcome it's limitations. This armor will save your life!" He then handed Ashess a dagger. "You know what that is for." Ashes just smiled up at the only friend he ever knew.

"Here Pjack try this!" Ashess handed his friend a cup.
"What is it?" he said looking down at the liquid with a frown.
"It's good just try it."
Pepperjack took a sip and soon downed the whole thing. "That is good! What is it?"
Ashess just smiled. "You are always telling me to find the patterns. I just found another one."
Pepperjack just looked at the young man. With pride he asked, "Have I ever told you of Cayden Caileen?"

When Barzillai Thrune took control the days seemed to get darker and darker. Pepperjack had to slow way down on stealing the few things they had. Not only that but he was getting too old. He couldn't outrun the Hellknights and other lawmen like he used to. Ashess had to resort to playing his old violin on the street for copper pieces. Sometimes even the Hellknights would flip him a copper. But the priests of Asmodeus and the rulers of Kintargo would frown and walk right bye.

Thrune issued a series of decrees. The last three were especially bad as it affected his business in making his drinks. Grain for beer and mint for tea. "No night tea? Really?" A few times he would sell his drinks to people. One day he gave out free samples. Part of a business plan to bring them back for more. When a riot almost broke out for free stuff he had to pack up shop and run.

When he got home his world shattered. Their small, discrete home was destroyed. All their meager possessions were intentionally burned. Everything he owned was gone. The only thing he found was his backpack with the formula book in it and Pepperjack's cane with the hidden blade. Later that night Ashess watched from the rooftops as the only friend he knew was executed for stealing what little food they survived on. He was considered a "repeat offender". Before Pepperjack was run through, he could have sworn he looked in his direction. And the Devil's Bells began to ring again. Ashess began to get very, very angry.
