Furtive and vindictive were two words that aptly described Apsalar’s life. Abandoned by her parents, she was forced to live by her wits. Self-preservation has become the necessary driving force of her life, because who else would look after her, if not herself? It wasn’t her fault that she was born different; it was whoever had consorted with a devil in her ancestral past! She had come to make peace with her tainted blood though, although she loathed how different she appeared to others, and despised their stares, she found herself able to hide more easily, and lie more convincingly in order to conceal her identity.
When she was unable to hide any further, she would resort to violence, lashing out at her tormentors. As a child, this would result in other urchins running in fear with various cuts and bruises, but as she grew older it turned into more serious injuries, and eventually her tormenters left her in relative peace.
She secured employment as the apprentice to a thieves’ guild assassin, and excelled under his tutelage, soon developing a reputation amongst the criminal element as a ruthless killer.
After the rise of the church of Mitra, a purge of the unsavory elements began. Slums were cleared out, brothels destroyed, and thieves guilds dispersed and imprisoned. During the paladins raid on the guild’s headquarters, as she was escaping out a back window, Apsalar saw her master cut down under a number of. Taking to the shadows and back alleys, she stalked his killers for days, tracking their movements, and dispatching them one-by-one.
Unfortunately for her, her movements had not gone unnoticed, and before long, she found herself manacled before a judge, sentenced to death, and in a cell at Brandescar.
