History

Anya was born the sixth child of a well-to-do, though not overly important family from the Medyved line. She remained the only girl to spring from hger parents, and was succeeded by yet another boy at age three. Throughout her earliest years, she had to battle her older siblings for every scrap of attention, love and gender-appropriate clothing. Her father, Orig, found himself a little at a loss on how to treat her, and as a result much raising was done by her brothers. Dotting in her early childhood was a series of misfortunes. When her brothers would twist an ankle, she'd break it. If her brothers were sick for a day, she was confined to bed for a week. If they got a scrape, she developed a scar. This problem persisted through her formative years, prompting whispering of disfavor among the fey courts. Her parents tried to guide her into more scholarly interests, but her brothers countermanded that as best they could - out of sheer adolescant cruelty.

She lived her childhood reasonably happy. Mostly she was concerned with pleasing her parents, learning reading, writing, social decorum, and the ability to accept her fate and betters. That lesson never quite sat well with her, though whenever she grew too vocal and rebellious, a hideous boogeyman was conjured: Lev. A child some said had been enchanted by the "Fair ones" in the womb, or else switched in the cradle. If she was going to be too disobediant, it might be an annoyance to the fey - and they might take her too. Merely the thought of being spirited to some realm, while another lived her life frightened the little girl into behaving.

As she grew closer to maturity, there was one influence on her that eclipsed all others: Her family's fencing trainer. Algrev was a "semi-retired" Swordlord of Rostland, an aging member of the Swordpact that still carried himself with poise and security. He never aimed to please one with flattery, never played one against the other, and most importantly to Anya never played favors or disfavors. At first she loathed his lessons. While she had a history of getting herself hurt over trivialities, he took her to task as hard as any of her brothers. Soon, though his harshness melted enough for her to spy the growing satisfaction - and the two developed a close, almost paternal bond. When they took to sparring, or simply practiced her swings against a dummy, she began to confide in him. Her youthful troubles brought a smile to the old face, while she was on occasion treated to tales of the swordpact, of duels fought and rivalries.

When she announced she was going to join the Swordpact, it caused a huge scandal. Algrev was accused of abusing his position. Even rumors of him having seduced Anya were circulated and little was done to stop them. The aging swordmaster resigned his position in disgusting, and Anya was about to be ushered to a nunnery for her best years, only to return as a bitter matron. She argued vehemently against it, even threatened to simply run away as her parents would not relent. Finally an uneasy compromise was reached: She would run away - for entire the world to know. In several years time, she might hope to return the prodigal daughter. However, while her father still ruled, she was unwelcome in the families' estates. Her brothers would decide in due time what to do with her.

After her departure, she found an entirely unhealthy dose of reality waiting for her. She made her way to Rostland on grudging "parting gifts" and prepared to apprentice in one of the fencing schools - but found none to take her. With no patron, no money and not enough good luck to find someone to take her in on talent alone, she kept herself afloat for a month on her dwiddling coins, considered finding work elsewhere - but ultimately somewhat at a loss on what to do now. When she heard the "unmentioned" Lev to not only having left his "half-exile", but also involved in some legitimate business, she decided to join up with her almost unknown "brother" - and see what his venture was all about
