Handsome, brash, arrogant, lazy. These are just a few of the words people have used to describe Anton. He grew up in his father's shop, learning the ins and outs of alchemy and all the wonderful shortcuts it provided. He never had a shortage of friends who couldn't wait to see what ridiculous brew he'd come up with next. Well that and the fact that, since he was helping to brew it, it wasn't hard for Anton to supply a little alcohol for those youth unwelcome in the taverns of Briston.

He and his father, Caleb Kree, moved to Lakeside with the end of Varisian martial rule. Grissom Kree, Caleb's father, was an extremely successful instigator in the rebellion and because of his rhetoric was facing military trial when the rebellion failed. So he fled with his son, leaving behind a wife who refused to leave and their two daughters. They fled to the small island nation of Braygo where Grissom took up his old trade, fishing, but Caleb won an apprenticeship with an alchemist and began learning the trade he'd later pass on to Anton.

Now, as Anton understands it, his father got his mother pregnant when they were very young, and Braygo was in the middle of some kind of religious revival with specific emphasis on blood purity. The islanders attempted to seize Caleb and the girl, but Grissom smuggled them out on his boat and the three of them fled to the mainland. Anton was born a few months later. Whenever Anton asks his father what happened to his mother, the only answer he ever gets is, "She went home."

They wandered for years, living off Grissom's fishing and what money they could earn from Caleb's concoctions. When Grissom passed away, Caleb knew he'd need help raising Anton, and so he did the only thing he could think of: he went home, too. He waited until word that martial law had lifted and then he took his son back to Briston where they reconnected with his remaining sister and set up shop brewing potions, crafting alchemical goods, and distilling some fine liquor to boot.

Things went fine for years. Anton grew up a clever but mischievous lad who loafed as often as he worked but still managed to pick up all the skills he needed to assist in the shop. From time to time, Anton would go out on the lake with his uncle Gunser. He was always quiet on the boats, remembering his grandfather and doing his best to remember his mother. Whenever an official Varisian group passed through Briston, whether military or not, Caleb and Anton would hide in the cellar of their shop. His aunt would bring them food and call Caleb a silly man, but that didn't stop him from hiding out again the next time.

With the death of Anton's aunt, things have fallen apart. His uncle has become withdrawn and distant. His father has taken to drinking away what fortune they had and most of their income to boot. Anton's friends are becoming adults and settling down into their own trades, beginning their own families.

Reluctantly, Anton has taken over running their business for now, but the death of his surrogate mother, the lingering questions about his real one, and his youthful need to escape his seemingly dull, tragic life in Briston all gnaw at him constantly. He's become moody and depressed, at least in private, and he's begun looking for a way to escape before it's too late.
