About Ansgar Vormirin

Son of Seldar of Clan Kir'kut of the Deep Warrens.

--- High Concept ---
I will lead my people to a better life.

--- Trouble ---
Salvation is always just beyond the next hill.
Ansgar often throws caution to the wind, and may blindly advance into unknown dangers, always expecting the situation to improve, even though it never does.

--- Aspects ---
Utterly fearless, as one who has lived in his own suffocating tomb. Ansgar fears nothing, and is often recklessly brave.
Let no one die alone. I will come back for you, my brother.
Fortune favors the brave. While Ansgar often acts impulsively, he seems to be almost divinely blessed with uncanny good luck. A greater destiny shields him, perhaps.

--- Skills ---
Great (+4): Fight

Good (+3): Toughness, Zeal

Fair (+2): Athletics, Perception, Survival

Average (+1): Intimidate, Leadership, Shoot, Stealth

--- Stunts ---
Law of the Fist: As a master of Kir'kut du fa (martial art), once per combat when I use Fight and succeed at a Defend action, I automatically gain a Boost against that foe.

Eyes of the Snake: Because I am from a race of subterranean tribal warriors, I have the ability to see in the infrared spectrum, and can see in total darkness.

Ultimate Survivor: As a native of the mining planet Taros Prime, I get +2 to Survival, Toughness or Zeal rolls made to Overcome the physical and psychological obstacles of extreme environments.

--- Backstory ---
Ansgar Vormirin is among the exalted members of Clan Kir'kut, a family of warriors dwelling in the vast subterranean system on Taros Prime.

Founded as a mining colony more than a millennium ago, Taros Prime is a hostile world situated close to its star. Though not tidally locked, its rotation period is only about twice its revolution, making a day on Taros Prime equivalent to sixty standard days. The planet has an extremely thin exosphere, and surface temperatures range from 100 degrees Kelvin on the night side to 500 degrees Kelvin on the Day side. These extremes penetrate the surface to a depth of about 100 meters, below which the sprawling tunnel systems excavated over a thousand years create habitable zones.

When the ore ran out, the miners were left to fend for themselves. The Dakkor Imperial Mining Company terraformed massive caverns within the planet interior - huge communal spaces that continue to provide food and breathable air for the humans who live there. Much of the light inside the planet is provided by bioluminescent insects, and a careful balance is maintained to insure the bugs have enough to eat without overpopulating or mutating. These insects are called "ki-li" and swarms are cultivated to power photosynthesis and also to pollinate. The ki-li are revered but must also be controlled. They are simultaneously the the thing that allows for life on Taros Prime and the the thing that, if left unchecked, would most quickly destroy it.

While the ki-li are common throughout the caverns and large open expanses, it is rare that they travel between them. The human population does use lights when necessary, but over the centuries they have developed sensory glands on either side of the head above the ears which allows them to see in the the infrared spectrum. Their eyes still work for visible light, and they can control which spectrum they are using by exerting a small amount of pressure - equivalent to a swallow - to release a hormone that switches the bandwidth.

After the mines dried up, only the senior mine managers who were not native to Taros Prime were evacuated. In the hundred years that followed, Taros natives divided into warring clans that hunt each other in the dark tunnels which crisscross the planet. Each has developed its own martial arts, called du fa for the vicious hand-to-hand combat that is most common. Kir'kut du fa uses quick blocks and strikes to convert an opponent's energy against them, turning defense into offense.

In recent decades, several clans have consolidated power, but the Kir'kut are on the outside of those arrangements. The lan faced annihilation, and must either leave Taros Prime, but whatever means possible, or be wiped out. In that context, Ansgar and his two older brothers embarked on a desperate mission to the surface of the planet to explore the long-abandoned headquarters and spaceport for the Dakkor Company. Inside, they managed to partially restore the ancient solar generators and send a distress signal back to the Imperium. Ultimately, both their prayers and fears were realized. A Space Marine conscription ship arrived while at the same time, most of Kir'Kut clan was wiped out during an attack by a rival clan. Ansgar's family managed to escape aboard the ship, but now they would be forced to serve a new master: the Emperor.
