Backstory
Ander Meliamne always worked hard, learning the trades of both woodcarving and herbalism. Though he was always exhausted, he found the work rewarding and liked that people could come to him for things they needed. He eventually joined an artisans' guild, and was able to set up a lucrative relationship with an elf-run martial academy, crafting bows and wooden training swords for use and supplying healing poultices for the occasional injury. Meanwhile, he enjoyed gleaning what he could about the art of combat, as the elves made it look like a true craft, not so different from his own.

Unfortunately, a few local dwarves (whether individually or as part of a larger group Ander has yet to learn) somehow took offense at the "elf-loving" human, and felt the appropriate expression of this offense was to burn his shop to the ground and run him out of town. Ander had to go to a different city and start from scratch, only able to avoid a beggar's fate thanks to his ties to his guild. Somewhat embittered but ultimately still optimistic, Ander has decided to take this as an opportunity for a career shift, and is trying his hand at the risky business of adventuring, hoping to master swordplay just as he mastered woodworking and herbalism.
