Ancrym hails from the Shriikirri-Quah, or Hawk Clan, of the Shoanti people. Like most of his clan, including his younger sister and brother, he was born into one of several families that formed a close-knit and mostly nomadic group. As a child, he displayed great promise as both a warrior and as a shaman. At 16, Ancrym earned his adulthood, full name and first clan tattoo by befriending a young firepelt cougar, who he named Karahkwa. All was well for many years, as the group was at peace with both the people and animals around them. All the while, Ancrym honed his magical, martial, and survival skills, and his bond with Karahkwa grew until the two were an expert and inseparable hunting team. His hope was to one day learn enough to master the ancient Shoanti fighting style called thunder and fang.
One day, as the group camped near Korvosa, Ancrym's younger sister Eyotah left briefly to see the city. When she did not return for a day, Ancrym went looking for her. There he quickly learned how difficult it was to find one person amid thousands. Despite many being unwilling to speak with him, he managed to discover that Eyotah had been kidnapped by a crime lord called Gaedrenn Lamm. Ancrym now seeks firstly to rescue his sister and return to his people, but also to aid any others who have been harmed by Gaedrenn's evils.

Ancrym is very obviously Shoanti, bearing the shaved head, intricate tattoos, and somewhat darker complexion of his people. He is a larger man, slightly more than 6 feet in height. He wears armored hides, and carries a longbow and earthbreaker on his back. He is followed almost everywhere by a large cat. Karahkwa has lines of distinctive red fur against black fur, marking her as a firepelt cougar, native to the Varisian area.
