I found that some of the Sword & Sorcery stuff was great, especially the two books of Relics and Rituals (still want to try a Summoner). The Witch's Handbook previously mentioned is a good read. Alchemists and Herbalists by Bastion Press as well as Guildcraft by the same are interesting reads. From Legends and Lairs I like Spells and Spellcraft, Path of Faith, and Path of Magic. Then again, I like arcane spellcasters and magic in general (who doesn't?).
If you're doing this with the 3 core only, start out with Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot ('cause friendly fire isn't friendly). Take Rapid Shot and Manyshot, but remember you can't combine the two. Rapid Shot is usable only as part of the full attack action, so you're getting the same benefit as a ranger with the Two-Weapon Fighting Feat (i.e. one extra attack). Manyshot allows you basically to stick and move when you use it, by giving you effectively all the attacks of a full attack action in the space of a standard action (albeit with penalties) and still permitting movement. Your wife might also want Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, Greater versions of both, Shot on the Run, Far Shot, and Improved Critical. Oh, and a composite longbow, masterwork and mighty at that. If she's a fighter, that'll keep her busy for a bit. If she's a ranger, she'll have to forgo the Weapon Specialization route, of course.
If you happen to need/want rules for Herbalism, try Alchemy&Herbalism by Bastion Press. Given time, you could produce quite a few magical or quasi-magical items. There are also some rules for finding and using plants in there that might help your cause. But be ready to start adding more skill points to your herbalism if you do that route; some of the DCs are in the 40s.
So many covers to choose from. My faves: 221-Appeasing Karita by Elmore (inspired one character)
One of the issues from 1st edition (might have been Dungeon) had a woman with a bow fighting a giant axe-wielding skeleton in the snow. That's another favorite that inspired a character. Of course, the best was really the 1st issue that inspired us all to play, whatever number that was.
I am not all that pleased with the loss of Dragon and Dungeon. They're both part of an age-old tradition that predates my current gaming group of 20 years. I recently renewed subscriptions to both because the quality of both magazines has gone up and up over the past few years. Will I like Pathfinder? I don't know. The only way to find out is to actually try it out. If it's done with the same love, sweat, and tears (let alone blood) as Dragon or Dungeon, then it'll be a worthy successor. But that won't keep me from raising a candle this summer in memory of Dragon and Dungeon. Sign in to create or edit a product review. |
