About Alim Akil

Alim Akil:

Alim Akil
male human (Badawi Keleshite) druid (swarm monger) 1 NG
STR: 10
DEX: 14
CON: 10
INT: 14
WIS: 17
CHA: 8

Concept: A wily old nomad is serving his tribe.

Appearance:
A small, scrawny man, the desert sun has baked Alim Akil brown as a nut. He wears only a loincloth, a dusty black vest and a turban; he prefers to go barefoot, though he carries a pair of sandals as a nod to necessity. His hair is a long, crazy black thatch that looks like he was caught in a hurricane (it's just as well that it's usually hidden in his turban), and his gimlet eyes are black as night. His wrinkled face and protruding ears give him the countenance of a gleeful old man. His thin arms and legs jut from his lean frame like those of a spider, concealing a wiry strength.

When ready to fight, he wears a hodgepodge of lice-ridden hides. He fights with either his staff or the same long, curved knife he uses to shave and eat with.

Having little patience for social niceties, Alim Akil is unashamedly uncivilized, scratching where it itches and speaking his mind.

Background:
Alim Akil was born to the Badawi nomads of the southern deserts of Katapesh. Too clever and uncouth by half, he became a hermit to avoid trouble from his tribe, but such was his understanding of nature that they often (albeit reluctantly) would seek him out, needing his aid or advice.

Then the drought came. In normal lands, a drought is terrible; in the desert, a drought is a thousand times worse. First, the animals died; then, the very young and the very old. Even the camels suffered. Before things grew worse, Alim Akil journeyed to find the cause of the drought, and came upon a wondrous cave, where all manner of delights lay before him. He fell upon them greedily, but they belonged to a mighty djinn, a huge figure of polished obsidian stone, with eyes like polished agate, mesmerizing and cold.

The djinn told Alim Akil that he might escape the fate he had inadvertently chosen by winning a game of stones. So skillfully did Alim Akil cheat that the djinn roared with laughter, and granted Alim Akil two boons, and two punishments. One, that he might call upon the djinn at times, so long as he honored his name - but could not call on any other; two, that the creeping things of the desert would obey his command - and would live around and on him, forever.

Alim Akil ventured from that wondrous cave a wiser man... but still, he had not found the cause of the drought. Driven from his tribe in their desperate anger, he drifted north, to distant Katapesh. Surely, there he would either find answers, or at least fill his belly.
