 Not long after her shared twelfth birthday, Alerienne suffered a terrible fall when she tripped and fell down a ravine while running in panic from a large spider her sister had shown her, fracturing her leg and hitting her head so badly that she slipped into a coma. The nearest healer was a mere apothecary who could do nothing but bind her leg and offer comforting words to her parents, but a wandering priest of Pharasma heard of her plight while travelling by on his way from Restov to Grozni Forest. Seeing a child halfway between life and death, he prayed for Pharasma's blessing, and an hour later, Alerienne opened her eyes for the first time in more than a week. Her close brush with death was a defining moment in her life, and the kind priest, seeing the new-found devotion in Alerienne's eyes, left an old, worn copy of The Bones Land in a Spiral with her before continuing on his way. Though her parents kept several books, and she had kept a personal diary ever since learning to write, this was the first true book that she had ever owned herself. Every day she would read from the book, learning of ancient prophecies, midwifery, burial rites, and how to fight the abominable undead. The nearest proper church was some seventy miles away in Restov, but the six mile walk to the home of the nearest midwife was far more in reach. Offering herself as an apprentice, Alerienne learned all the practical knowledge of midwifery, and her keen eyesight at night proved a great aid in quickly reaching the houses of women who went into labour early. When her parents learned how often she was going about her new duties at night, they forced her to begin practising with a bow, having her drill for hours on end, worried that she might otherwise end up torn apart by a pack of wolves. It wasn't until she was well into her twenties however, that Alerienne finally made the journey to Restov to become an acolyte at the church of Pharasma there. She never ceased training with her bow, and began practising with other weapons as well, for she knew that the Lady of Graves had need of warriors who could seek out the scourge of the undead and who could minister to those in wild, dangerous parts of the world. Upon becoming a full priestess in service to Pharasma, Alerienne departed Restov to begin travelling back and forth along the border, offering her services as needed and frequently guided to just the right house to ease the passing of the elderly, assist with the birth of a child, or in one case, to fight off several zombies that had risen from the shallow graves they had been left in by a small band of outlaws.
