About Alaric ZimmelAlaric Zimmel
The old man has short cropped white hair and a clean shaven face. While not particularly wrinkly, the years have taken their toll on him. His gnarled hands are covered in scar tissue. A slightly hunched back accompanies his limping gait, but if one were to look closely he or she might notice a mischievous glint in the man’s pale blue eyes. His clothes are simple, but well tailored. They look old and slightly foreign, but appear to be in good shape nonetheless. Over his faded blue shirt and brown breeches, he wears a faded cloak held in place by a tarnished silver clasp. A small ruby is set into the brooch, belying the man’s otherwise nearly shabby appearance. Ability Scores:

Background:
Alaric was born to a well-respected shopkeeper within elven lands. While his brother Aaron was strong of body and weak of mind, Alaric was the opposite. He could lift little but had a mind that constantly searched for new problems to solve. His intelligence, while acknowledged, won him no favors in the family. The only brainpower they needed was enough to keep the books. Even his brother could manage that. He grew up wanting power. As he saw the men and women of the village getting together, he had nothing like this. He needed power. So he made a witchpact. Having spent his childhood and teenage years reading through the books he could find, he knew that one of humanity’s great powers was vengeance. He chose his pact accordingly, and left home at the age of 17.
He had been watching events unfold for years, getting his hands on every piece of information he could about the fights of kings and what leaders had done. He decided to back an elven nobleman. Raderryn Striarest was a relatively minor noble, but he was ambitious and possessed the will necessary to improve his status. Convincing Raderryn to let him serve as an advisor, Alaric built his influence and the power of Raderryn. Raderryn expanded his lands and began to move up in the ranks of the Elven nobility. One day Raderryn had a prisoner, an elf by the name of Alhinis Nyfang. He led Alaric down to the dungeons one day, where the man was tied to a table, and told him “This man has information that we need about the defenses of the castle our men are to assault next. If we can get his information we could potentially save thousands of lives. I am not going to tell you what you should and should not do. I am just going to ask you: What is one man’s life worth to you? How much are a thousand? I will leave you alone with your thoughts and our friend here for you to discover that.” Within an hour the man was giving a full account of the defenses of the castle and was even “kind” enough to draw diagrams. The castle fell and a new job developed for Alaric. At first Ryostin would bring him down to the dungeons for special prisoners, claiming with each that Alaric could “save lives.” Pretty soon Alaric was regularly working out of the dungeons trying to “save their men” in his way. It went on like this for years. Men, women, children. It didn’t matter. All who crossed his path gave up their secrets as they screamed. Pretty soon Alaric found himself in his early 30s with a fearsome reputation, but one session broke him. A child of ten witnessed Raderryn murder surrendering peasants for amusement. Furious, Alaric turned on the noble and suffered a humiliating defeat. He sought out and confessed to an Imperial Knight. Because he turned himself in, the knight spared his life. As punishment for his crimes, however, Alaric’s Cacodaemon familiar was destroyed and he himself was cursed to never harm anyone again or he would suffer a slow, terrifying death. Utterly broken, Alaric left elven lands and ventured south. He finally settled outside the town of Aurra and became a hermit. After decades of acting as a herbalist and occasional healer, Alaric finally amassed enough coin to perform the ritual that would summon a new familiar. He called forth a Cassisian angel in the hope that with its help he might one day be redeemed.

Secrets from Alaric:
People:
Eleanor Illrin: Human woman. In her prime at the lovely age of 54, Eleanor works as a librarian in Aurra. Eleanor and Alaric have kept up a pleasant flirtation over many years. Helpful to their relationship is the knowledge that Eleanor is a rather powerful sorcerer who could kick Alaric’s ass with relative ease should she feel like it. Glispin Korik: half-elf, formerly a merchant trader and friend to Alaric. When the duke started to gain power and prestige Glispin was right alongside him. However, Glispin, prepared as ever, never technically got his hands dirty. He preferred to work from the shadows and become fat and rich from the trade in weapons and his pick of the newly acquired land from the duke’s victories. He retained much of what he once had even afterward. He doesn’t look upon Alaric as a friend, nor as an enemy. Alhinis Nyfang: First man that Alaric tortured. While previously an important commander in a rival army, he was suspected of being a traitor after the information was tortured out of him about the fort’s defenses. The man was imprisoned by his former allies and by the time he got out, Alaric had been sent away. |
