Living Steel:
Some trees suck up potent minerals through their roots the same way others draw water from the ground. Though these trees blunt saws and axes used to hew them and shrug off fire, they eventually succumb to time or the elements. When properly harvested, these fallen trees produce nuggets of a metal called living steel. This glossy green metal slowly repairs itself. An item made from living steel repairs damage to itself at a rate of 2 hit points per day, or 1 hit point per day if it has the broken condition. Items not primarily of metal are not meaningfully affected by being partially made of living steel.

Armor and shields made from living steel can damage metal weapons that strike them. Whenever the wielder of a metal weapon rolls a natural 1 on an attack roll against a creature wearing living steel armor or wielding a living steel shield, the item must make a DC 20 Fortitude save or gain the broken condition. If the weapon already has the broken condition, it is instead destroyed. Living steel cannot damage adamantine weapons in this way.

The Lone Wolf:
Alaina Steele, a woman who had been around fighting all of her life. As far back as she could remember, her parents were always arguing about one thing or another, although they did their best not to do so in front of her. But she always knew, especially on the few occasions when blows were exchanged and her father, Marcus, had a few more bruises than her mother, Tamera. When Alaina was 10, Marcus became fed up with the constant bickering with his wife, and just left them both in Abbhen City. Tamera took it hard, turning to the bottle to drown her woes, which in turn got her killed in an industrial accident at one of the local ironworks. Having no other family around, Alaina was shuffled into an orphanage just blocks away from the Fighters Guild.

Over the next few years, the young girl had gotten into several fights. One of which would change the course of her life forever. At the age of 14, Alaina was heading back from the Fighter’s Guild after having watched another series of exhibitions of the local fighters. As she passed by an alley, five men grabbed her and pulled her into the alley. It was clear what was on their minds, and she wasn’t going to make it easy for them. The first three that approached she put into the ground, but the fourth managed to subdue her and slam her face in the wall, causing her to lose consciousness. She awoke a short time later, her clothes slightly torn but still on her person. Her eyes went wide as she witnessed a dwarf pounding the remaining offender into the ground. When her savior turned around, she saw the Fighter’s Guild medallion about his neck.

"Are you alright Miss?" The Dwarf asked.

"Yes thank you," She replied while getting to her feet.

But her head soon began spinning once more and she nearly fell. However the Dwarf caught her. After answering the City Watches questions, the Dwarf kindly offered to escort Alaina home.

On the journey back, the Dwarf said, "The name’s Choztu Stonecask. And what might your name be?"

The young girl answered, "Alaina, pleasure to meet you Choztu. Pardon my asking, but you wouldn’t happen to be one of the Ring Fighter’s would you?"

"Why, yes I would be one of them. They call me the Jade Bear."

Alaina stopped in her tracks, "The…..the Jade Bear?" With an uncontrollable squeal, she wrapped her arms about the Dwarf, "You’re one of my favorites. That bout against Steel Raven was one of the best matches I’ve ever seen."

Taken aback, all Choztu say was, "Well, nice to meet a fan." After the hug, they continued on their way. "By the way, may I compliment you on putting down three of the goon before I got there. You seem to have some remarkable skill."

The young girl couldn’t help but blush, "Coming from you, that means so much to me."

The Dwarf smiled, this one was certainly a rare jewel. When they reached the orphanage, he looked up at it in surprise. "You live here?"

"Since my mother died four years ago, yes." Alaina responded.

"You’re an orphan?" Choztu asked in a rather surprised tone.

"I am."

"Not anymore you’re not." The Dwarf stated before marching passed her up the stairs and to the Headmaster’s office.

Alaina was dumbstruck that not only did one of her idols save her from a group of thugs, but now he was adopting her. She pinched herself just to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. And she wasn’t. Over the next couple of years, Choztu had taught Alaina much. While a loving adopted Father, he was a very strict instructor, always pushing her to do more than she thought she could and to think outside the box. It was this line of thinking that prompted her to take up a different weapon, the shield.

The training paid off, for at the age of 18, Alaina had entered her first match and won. With her first victory, she was allowed to choose a name for the ring. She chose Iron Wolf, for reasons she never made quite clear.

Excited over his adopted daughter’s spectacular victory, Choztu took her to see a cousin of his that worked wonders with all sorts of metal. He told her to pick one of any of the shields he had in stock. After some browsing, she came across a perfectly smooth rounded green metal shield that caught her fancy. The cousin explained that the shield was made of Living Steel, a special metal that slowly repaired damage done to it, and if a metal weapon hit it just right, could break the weapon. Choztu purchased the shield for his daughter.

Over the next three years, Alaina fought in many matches, winning several, but losing just as many. One particular fight, she faced the Diamond Scorpion, a man skilled at using polearms. And what skill he possessed, for the Iron Wolf couldn’t get close or get a firm grip on his weapon to break it. Then a crazy thought came to her, it was a risk, but if it paid off, it would be worth it. She waited for the right time, and finally it came. As the Scorpion lunged forward, Alaina leaped and twisted out of the way. As she came around, the Wolf threw her shield and struck the man directly in the face, sending him unconscious to the mat. A thunderous roar went up from the crowd, which for some reason had lost its luster. Looking at the fallen man, something about him reminded her of her real father. Every fight since, it was not her opponent she saw, it was her father Marcus.

Unable to bear with the not knowing of what happened to him, she started looking for him. Spending over a thousand gold pieces on investigators over the course of months, until a lead finally appeared. The last place that anyone had seen of him was five years ago in Southtown, a city north of the mountains in the Kingdom of Altiendel. Without hesitation she gathered her gear and some other essentials for the trip.

Seeing Choztu before leaving, the old Dwarf gave her a parting gift. Pulling an old cloak from his chest that he hardly ever opened, he said, "This helped to keep me safe back in my young adventuring days. May it do the same for you."

Taking the cloak, she gave the dwarf that was more of a father to her than her real one, Alaina tearfully said, "Thank you Dad, I’ll return. I promise."

With that, the Iron Wolf set off to finally get some answers from the bastard that abandoned her and her mother.
