Description:
19 yo | 5' | 110 lbs

Aja is a young Varisian woman who might be considered pretty – petite, firm brown skin, and red-brown hair. But her skin is drawn too tightly over her bones. Her sightless, milky eyes (Curse: Clouded Vision) are eerie… but made worse in conjunction with the scores of ashen pictograms tattooed across her face. Her neighbors generally agreed that the tattoos that pour like tears from her eyes and ‘drip’ down her cheeks are the most unsettling of all.

It’s likely why she was sometimes called the Banshee of Barque Bazaar when she lived in Absalom. Then there are the spirits (Curse: Haunted) that seem to surround her… and the near-constant tapping of her cane – preventing the blind woman from bumping into things. Tap Tap Tap, at all hours of the day or night, Tap Tap Tap. But something about Aja is captivating (CHA:20) to many of the locals. She speaks and people just listen… whether she is making her eerie prognostications, laughing at odd moments, or having conversations with – most people fervently hope – just herself.

Backstory:

Mother, father, elder sister, and younger brother… Aja was a mostly normal girl and had a family once. No one in the Puddles was rich, of course, but her siblings never went without food or love that Aja recalled.

Aja was eight when something exploded or burned or was disastrously magicked. The details were vague and – given the governance and what-passed-for the Watch in Absalom’s poorest district – no one looked into the matter at all. Ramshackle buildings were blasted, people reduced to cinders, and Aja was the only survivor pulled from the sinking wreckage of her shattered home – the ashes of her sister and brother locked in her tight fists. Despite the best efforts of the local healers (not the city’s finest admittedly) her eyes were unsalvageable – burned out from the horrifying brilliance they witnessed. As one of the newer of the city’s orphans, she had little time to dwell on what happened. Eating and survival were all she could manage. Luckily, she found she had some friends willing to guide and help her. They weren’t flesh and blood but what did that matter? Good advice was good advice.

And so Aja became a ward of the city which offered little but an infrequent meal and sometimes a relatively safe (and only occasionally water-logged) place to sleep for the night. She focused on the present, burying the recollections of her happy youth and the mystery that ended it all. It was a couple years later when her magical gifts began to manifest that she started to ponder about that night. How did I get these gifts? Why? Did something happen that night that made me what I am? Did someone do this on purpose?

Aja had no answers… But, with the assistance of her ghostly friends, she’d get answers eventually. It was just a matter of time. Until then, she had to eat. Being a soothsayer, a seamstress, as well as a non-judgmental local healer for people’s various ‘indiscretions’ paid the bills.

But when the world sundered, her tentative hold on reality sundered as well. Talenthanis’ voice in her head merged with her ghostly friends’ and it seemed the screaming would never stop – until it did. Before the Sundering, Aja would try to keep quiet about the conversations with her friends. She understood they made her look strange. After the Sundering, her friends are louder and she has to assert herself more… witnesses be damned.

Aja isn’t sure how she came through the ‘mist’ into Passbog. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that her view of the world was already bound by her own misty vision. At least the village wasn’t as constantly wet or dangerous as the Puddles. So, she decided to make the best of her new surroundings and help out as she could, falling back on her skills as a soothsayer, healer, and seamstress.
