Alessa was born on the road to a small caravan. She does not remember where, and it does not matter; she is and has always been a child of the road. Her family life was typical of Varisians, though she always enjoyed time with her aunt, the caravan's fortuneteller.

In fact, it seemed she had a knack for the sight from a surprisingly young age. It surprised her family, and they felt they had found the one to replace her aging aunt when her time came.

Alessa, though, felt stifled. It wasn't so much that she did not want to be a fortune teller as much as she did not want to be told she would be anything. She was stubborn, and childish, but she was a stubborn child in possession of supernatural foresight - a dangerous mix to be sure.

She ran away from her caravan one evening when they neared a large Chelaxian settlement. She knew she would not be found. She was right, unfortunately for her. Life on the lam was not kind to a 12 year old girl, and were it not for finding her instructor, and his ability to appreciate her talents she may have ended up in the slave pens.

Fortune was on her side, though, and the man, Professor Lorrimor, took her under his wing. He taught her the basics of spellcasting, and her intellect grasped the principles easily, surpassing both their expectations.
