Pathfinder Battles Preview: Hoist the Black Flag: Skull & Shackles!

Friday, March 8, 2013

I am pleased to announce today that the next major Pathfinder Battles release will be a full 55-figure set inspired by Paizo’s popular Skull & Shackles Adventure Path! Skull & Shackles casts players in the role of a gang of pirates with their own ship, struggling to make a name for themselves in the treacherous southern seas of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting!

The new Skull & Shackles Pathfinder Battles prepainted fantasy miniatures set provides players and GMs with legions of figures to kit out their seafaring campaigns, from pirates to aquatic menaces to undead horrors from the briny deep!

Our partners at WizKids have been delivering amazing new sculpts and killer paint masters on a weekly basis, and things are moving very rapidly with this set as we head toward its summer 2013 release (more later on the specific date when WizKids locks down a few more details on the manufacturing side).

As with previous major Pathfinder Battles releases, the Skull & Shackles set features a special limited-edition figure available only to folks who purchase a case. This time around, it’s the Gargantuan Skeletal Dragon Brinebones, a major antagonist in the campaign that easily stands toe-to-bony-toe with our previous Gargantuan dragon releases (and other Gargantuan dragons yet to come). Check out these very early behind-the-scenes photos of the Gargantuan Skeletal Dragon from WizKids’s factory!

Of course, the set contains a fair share of Small, Medium, and Large figures as well. Let’s take a look at a few of these water-logged beasties for just a hint of what’s in store when the set releases this summer.

Here we have the squamous Sea Troll, a deadly denizen of the deeps eager to munch your player characters into chum. He stands with a bit of a curved spine, making him a little smaller than the Troll Champion from the Shattered Star set. But when you get this figure in hand, you’ll agree that he fits right in with his big land-dwelling brother. Only I think he may be a little bit cooler, which is saying something, since the Troll Champion is my favorite figure from the last set. When WizKids brought the Sea Troll to our office, everyone agreed that it was a step forward for the line. You guys are going to love it.

Of course, the set includes lots of pirates, with this guy here being just the first of several we’ll show off in the coming weeks. The sculpt detail on this fellow is amazing, and I suspect he will see lots of use by GMs as well as players looking for a cool swashbuckling figure.

There are, of course, lots more figures to show off in this set, but we’ve got a lot of weeks between now and the summer and plenty of time to show them all off.

In the coming months, look forward to more pirates, more aquatic creatures, more creatures never before produced in prepainted plastic, and more figures specifically demanded by you here on paizo.com.

And while you’re checking out the Skull & Shackles set, keep in mind that WizKids is hard at work on the NEXT set after that. With the set-to-set improvement we’ve seen on paint steps and sculpts we’ve seen so far, I can’t even imagine how amazing THAT one is going to be!

More next week, you scallywags!

That certainly seems to leave the possibility of a Cannon Golem open!

I know if I were selecting the illustrious 54 that made it in, a Cannon Golem would be at the top of my list as soon as gunpowder showed its presence.

But hey, I guess bigger is better.

Size does matter! After last week I will likely never use the Large DDM Elementals again unless I need multiples. The Paizo/Wizkids versions are simply the best yet in PPM.

He would most definitely be a figure that I'd want to pick up as a single. Huge impact when dropping that on the table versus the AP-specific paper minis or pawns that we're using.

It turns out they were always recyclable; they just hadn't been marking it as such.

I wanted to ask this when the mini line was first introduced, but would you guys ever consider doing a contest open to the public to design a mini in a upcoming release?? A character bio or a lucky drawing at a convention?? Heck that would be great for a sweet win at Paizo-Con and Gen-Con. Get a shot at Designing a MINI!!! Just a thought :D

The Pathfinder Online Kickstarter that ended in January included the following reward at the $10,000 level:

Crowdforger Art Lover: Patrons at this level get all of the Crowdforger Alpha level rewards. In addition, world-famous Pathfinder artist Wayne Reynolds will paint your hero in the style of his head-to-toe "iconic character" images based on a 300-word description provided by you! The painting will be appear in the Pathfinder Online game as an image of a renowned hero hanging in an important NPC establishment. Additionally, the painting will be used by WizKids to create a prepainted plastic miniature for an upcoming set of Pathfinder Battles miniatures, and we will provide you with 10 copies of that miniature after it is released. You will receive the original painting, and will be given a high-resolution scan for your personal use. You'll also have the ability to use your hero's illustration as a unique avatar on the Goblinworks messageboards. (The copyright to the image, character name, and description will be held by Paizo Publishing, LLC., which reserves the right to reject inappropriate, anachronistic, or vulgar content. Your hero must conform to a race and class combination allowed by the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook.)

So you can see that what you ask is *possible*, but you can also see that we value it highly.

Love the sculpt of the Skeletal Dragon! However, still have an issue on the size, at least from what I can see of the photo shot.

I picture a Gargantuan along the lines of the white dragon from the D&D Iconic line, and it just seems the huge Black and now huge blue seem small for their size category.

Am I the only one who feels this?

I know what you mean. In my view the two product lines (DDM and PFBattles) are similar but have subtly different design styles. I think Wizkids are clearly allowing much more variance within the differing size categories, for example (the two trolls being the most obvious example, but there are others as well). I think there are also differences in style - I find the PFB design more 'cartoony' in some instances than DDM (that's not a comment on quality).

.
In my case, some of the things I found "odd" about PFBattles figures I have since reconciled as being due to my expectations/assumptions which had developed from collecting DDM figures. I have a feeling the sizing variation is one of those things that will come to seem more normal over time - once the number of gargantuan/huges (and the upcoming colossals, right Erik?) grows, I think the sculpts like this will come to seem like "small gargantuans" rather than "mischaracterised huges".

Unfortunately, in my area we have to know what the recycle code is; the recycling companies that service my area won't recycle miscellaneous plastic (Recycle code 7).

We haven't seen the Gargantuan Skeletal Dragon in hand yet, so it's difficult for me to comment specifically on the size. It's possibly they'll bring it by tomorrow when WK comes over for approvals of the latest S&S paint masters--apparently about 30 of them. It's going to be an exciting day!

The Trolls are a bit of an outlier in terms of size variance. The H&M Troll is simply too small. I personally plan to use him as a whelp or something. It's pretty cool in a lot of ways, but we were still finding our level with that set.

The Troll Champion, on the other hand, probably represents the biggest we think a troll should really ever be. The Sea Troll in S&S will give a better indication of what we think is "just right" in terms of trolls, and future trolls will be more in line with this, making the Champion the large exception, rather than the rule. You'll understand what I mean once we get a few more releases under our belts.

Glad to see people are digging the idea of this set. There are some really amazing figures coming up!

I am so looking forward to this set. But I know you guys were planning something different for huge sized minis. For long time collectors like me huge minis and larger are really where the necessary minis are. Just wondering if someone could elaborate whether you still plan to do huge sets.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The current plan is to release huges in formats other than as part of big sets.

Expect to see Encounter Packs and products like them in the months to come.

VERY exciting news Erik! I for one cannot wait to see what you guys and Wizkids have in mind/have in store regarding Huge minis. Looking forward to some news along these lines. :)

Oh ... especially if they pertain to a certain Huge White Dragon and a Huge Blue Dragon that appear towards the end of your very first Adventure Path! :D (Yes, you know who I mean). ;)

Me (again).

So...

I notice that the Skull & Shackles AP is very nautical themed. You know what else are nautical? Aboleth. Not many aboleth miniatures available on the market either.

*nudge nudge*

*wink wink*

Need I say more?

I've never gotten a tpk with a gargantuan Dracolitch, but I think I'm gonna have to work this beast in somewhere.

I'm very interested in getting these minis when they are released this summer, but I've never bought a full case before and so I'm a little vague as to how this works. Perhaps the more knowledgeable among you can help out a noob? ;D

Obviously, I buy the case from Paizo... but when they say the limited edition undead dragon is only available to those who buy a case, does that mean the dragon is a promo piece that comes with the case or is it a separately purchased item?
Also is there any ballpark idea on what prices are likely to be like?

Absolutely love the look of these figures so far, BTW... the new pictures of the Grindylows (warriors, Mother and Whale) over in the Miniatures section look just great!

You know what girls say when they see the sea troll mini?
How is he supposed to eat with that lower jaw? :D
And i said:"he doesn´t look like he´s starving, look at his belly!
But as i slept, i thought about it and the next morning i said to her: "that´s why he has the axes - he cut´s everything in bite-sized bits!" ;p

When you buy a case. You are allowed to purchase one dragon for a discounted price. When you bought the case of shattered star, we were allowed to get the blue dragon for $39.99, I believe. To answer your question it is a separate purchase. It is also will be delivered separately from your case.

Your best bet if you're going to buy a case of an upcoming set from Paizo is to add a subscription (you can cancel it if a future set comes out you're not interested in). That way you'll get sent a case plus you can purchase the incentive figure for 75% off (ie you get a case for four hundred dollars and they will automatically add the dragon to the shipment for ten bucks).

A subscription also entitles you to 20% off the purchase of any loose single PF Battles minis, plus gives you a voucher for a 20% discount off one Encounter Pack or Builder Series display (there arent many of them to choose from yet, but some more are on the horizon...)

The discount to single minis is ongoing from the time your first subscription case ships until you cancel it and the one-use voucher lasts for twelve months (I think - that has been in flux somewhat as the line commenced, but it will be for at least twelve months anyhow).

Thanks very much for the information. Time to start saving pennies! :D

Any news yet? Or perhaps any idea of when more news may come?

You'll be hearing about the next two pretty soon—they may not be announced simultaneously, but they should at least come in pretty quick succession.
