Pathfinder Battles Preview: Pathfinder Online Promo Figures

Friday, January 11, 2013

The big Pathfinder Online Kickstarter Campaign wraps up this upcoming Monday, so before we head out for the weekend, I wanted to interrupt our normal Pathfinder Battles preview schedule to give a look not just at the seven figures we’ve already revealed, but also the two remaining figures that are likely to be unlocked this weekend as we push toward the project’s ambitious $1,000,000 funding goal.

Please take some time to visit the Pathfinder Online Kickstarter page for more details on which pledge levels receive the promotional minis. There are several options available to match several levels of support.

Stats for these creatures will appear in the giant Emerald Spire Superdungeon that is also a part of this Kickstarter effort. All Pathfinder Online promo miniatures are specially created repaints of existing or upcoming Pathfinder Battles figures.

Up first we have the Bloodbriar Goblin Raider, a brutal little beastie native to the region of Thornkeep, one of Pathfinder Online’s starting towns.

Next up is the insidious Shadowfire Elemental!

Followed by the Lava Lurker!

Finishing up this sub-set’s elemental theme, we have the Mudlord!

And watch out for the Moon Spider!

I’m sad to be the first to inform you that the forests of the River Kingdoms region, where Pathfinder Online takes place, are crawling with Bugbear Snipers!

And Echo Wood Outlaws!

And now, let’s take a look at the two remaining figures, starting with the Emerald Automaton! This repaint is based off a yet-to-be-revealed figure from the Shattered Star set, which we’ll get back to next week.

And last (unless, of course, your support blows the project past $1,100,000!), we’ve got the evil Bone Priest!

And that’s it for now! Please support the Pathfinder Online Kickstarter Campaign. Your generous pledges of support not only help to create an awesome and exciting video game experience, but they’ll also net you some sweet prepainted plastic figures!

Next week we’ll get back to the business of revealing the rest of the Shattered Star set, which will finally release on January 23rd! We’re so close now, you can taste it!*

OK, I really want to see the original paint scheme for the Emerald Automaton. I recognize most of the others, but that one looks big and mean.

"That's it for this week! Next week we'll take a look at some more key NPCs from the Shattered Star Adventure Path!

Also next week, we'll reveal additional details about a special convention-season promotional repaint goblin figure that we'll be distributing throughout 2013! Backers of the Pathfinder Online Kickstarter Campaign at the Goblin Squad level and above will get a certificate to receive this figure FREE at Gen Con. So come on back and check it out, this is definitely a figure you will not want to miss!

See you in seven days!"

Lame.

I was waiting on that goblin release mentioned last week, and the key NPC's. Have to wait another week now :(

On a positive note I really like 6 of the 9 minis on the kickstarter - elementals are excellent, a goblin repaint is always welcome - and his pseudo albino look is a great idea. The automaton looks awesome, and I have been eagerly awaiting the automaton for shattered star. Of course the bone priest simply means skeletal champions of different colours - saves me repainting and may even prefer this scheme to the original muddy red! Sadly the project needs to 1.1 mil for and while I wish it all the luck I'm not 100% certain it can get there.

The only two that dissapoint me are the bugbear and the outlaw - just didn't see them as great repaint candidates. I suppose if more bugbears of the same style come out then he's handy as a commander.

(emphasis mine)

Does this mean we will see ALL the remaining minis in the set next week? Excitment overload!!

Guys that is not what the post says... If we hit 1,100,000 we get another figure. The ones shown are for the 900k and 1 million marks.

I wish there was an "all the minis" add-on. :(

A few points:

1) Mine all mine... is right. These are the minis through a million bucks. If we get beyond that, we'll reveal additional figures.

2) I'm going to have to share more info regarding the convention season goblin a different week. I'd expected to have a paint master to show, but in fact haven't received the blank figure yet. Rest assured when we show this off it will blow minds, and it will come with additional reveals no one is expecting.

3) Next week we'll get back to revealing the rest of the figures in the set. We won't reveal all the figures in Shattered Star next week, but we will get to more than four of them.

4) Time is moving very rapidly at the moment. I can't believe it's been only a week since I wrote last week's blog. Holy moley!

The store open to backers will sell them individually for a time and then they will be available here.

Oh, btw, I got pictures of all 55 figures in the NEXT full set this week. It'll be a while before we have paint masters to show off, but wow, there's some really cool stuff very near the horizon!

Erik will you be announcing the name of the next set anytime soon?

Hopefully we get 3 or 4 more iconics. I'd like to have a full set soon.

Yeah same heh =)

Maniac: Certainly not until a few weeks after Shattered Star comes out. Each set needs its time in the sun.

Duedor: The current plan is to have two iconics in each set. We'll get to all of them.

Dark Archive

I assume that means even the ones outside of the core rules?

Ya know what that the Pathfinder Online campaign really needs? An Add-on to buy additional sets of miniatures!

Spot on, I'd add on 2 packs immediately if you added this.

Yeah. My fault can't count in multiples of 100. Thats great news to me since I really like that skeletal champion mini.

The store open to backers? The goblin works store? Or the usual KS survey style store?

Horay. More than 4, thats good news. I agree with you, need to give each set some time to shine ion its own right. Let some discussion occur, get some feedback. Revel in the beauty of the minis. Except perhaps fior the next case incentive we really need to know what that is ASAP :P

Dark Archive

Sorry for the delay... The goblin works store.

Well that is good news.

Erik, given the next set is done, and at one point you mentioned the one after that as in progres, are you able to shed any light on the situation with huge minis? I know you were thinking about the issue, just curious as to whether we will see any in the near future - still many huge gaps to fill in the mini linew.

How about talking about the plans for encounter packs?

Yep.

There is one encounter pack in development at the moment. I can't talk about it yet.

There are two more that I am pushing aggressively for, and a third and fourth that we've discussed.

There are Other Things in development as well.

Plus two full sets, all of which are in sculpting or sculpt approvals.

My current thinking is that encounter packs are the best place for Huge figures. This is not an ideal solution, but the way they were implemented in Rise of the Runelords leaves room for improvement. The silver bullet on this hasn't been fired yet.

Great to hear an encounter pack is coming, and I hope you get way with the others.

Other Things? This has the potential to be very interesting...do tell (he says in vain hope.)

Love to see Huges in ecounter packs - as long as they are new ones (like the hite drahon or cloud giant left off Runelords). This could be a better way to do if people actually put their money where their mouth is and buy them (I know I would). Just the ability to fill out a few needed huges would be enough for me. I sure there is a thread somewhere that list people ideal huges.

Runelords method wasn't ideal, but I actuallyfound it fine - I got the minis I wanted out of a case, but only because I bought a case. Individually random huges are too much outlay for a potential (and random) reward. Shame really because the standard oif those huge minis was fantastic, and the line just seems to be upping this standard. I have only praise for you and wizkids for the mini line.

That all sounds awesome. Especially the "Other Things". :)

I dont know how free the information is, but fwiw when the (rejigged?) encounter packs are announced, I'd appreciate any insight you can provide about the decision making process behind it all. The comments you've shared previously about rarities/set sizes/etcetera have given me a much better understanding about the prepainted minis market than I could deduce on my own.

.
I have to confess that I'm a slightly sad, nerdy accountant who enjoys some of the behind the scenes business stuff just as much as the actual product. :/

The story is probably less interesting that you might imagine.

Erik Mona wrote:

Interesting is in the eye of the beholder. I spent the weekend reconciling the FTE outlays of a major hospital's medicine department and separating out rostered overtime from non-rostered. (Not for money, just for interest). :p

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

(Right now, I'm on-board the kickstarter for $5 plus the $100 Print Pack.) It looks like the miniatures are available at the $100 level, with an additional set of the nine figures as a $50 add-on.

Sorry. They do look fun, but I'm not interested in spending an additional $95 for nine alternate paint miniatures (plus a lot of other stuff I won't use). That's just way too high a price point.

Sczarni

Chris Mortika - might want to keep watching.... if we get to 1.1 million, another mini will be added, and rumor is there is a possibility for this to be a new scuplt... and this will continue every 100K... so if the bubble keeps going, the '$95' may be for as much as 12-15 figures in the long run, which about the same as the $5 a figure we've been seeing for convention exclusives after the convention is over. Also if you go to Gencon, you get a free convention exclusive figure instead of having to pay for it, and all of the PDF pack PDFs that you don't have.

Grand Lodge

Congrats on funding the MMO. I look forward to the repaints.

Mazra wrote:

I agree, figures, Game PDFs, a super dungeon, and a computer game on top of it all. Well done.

I'm happy to support whatever gets more Huge (or larger) figures out there... but I was very pleased with the RotR distribution. I got 2 of each of the models I was hoping to. However, if I ever wanted more of the Demon (which is a distinct possibility), it is a little problematic because I'd end up with some useless Karzoug statues or I'd have to buy them (more expensively) as singles.

Would the encounter packs help with this? I guess where I'm getting at with this is like I could buy a case or two, then singles of the ones I need more for. Would that really be less expensive than buying them, in effect, as all singles in the encounter packs?

Maybe I'm a fringe case in your overall marketing plan but I seek enough miniatures to run any (reasonable) encounter in the adventure paths. So sometimes I really do need a lot of minis!

I noticed the remaining images of the miniatures in the Shattered Star set are all viewable in the galleries. Thanks for sharing all of the images in advance of the release.

Portioque, Grub Swarm, Tower Girl, both Medium and Large Air Elementals, Cleric of Zon-Kuthon, Ardathanatus, Sheila Heidmarch, all look great and very usable in play.

I need to see these in hand to tell if they will be useful or not: Clockwork Soldier, Xulgath, Shriezyx, and Dullahan.

A couple questions:
Is Dullahan a headless horseman?

What are Xulgath and Shriezyx?

Thanks.

Dulluhan is the Irish myth the headless horseman is based on. Was originally fey rather than undead, but close enough. :P

I seem to notice that the "human" miniatures look much better than in the previous 2 sets - finally! :-)

Is there any news on the availability of the Pathfinder Online exclusive miniatures for those of us that didn't back the Kickstarter? I'm still hoping there will be enough extras to purchase a set from the Paizo store once all the pledgers have gotten their fill.

Sczarni

I don't see getting them to be that much of an issue, I'm sure there will be extras, and I know a fair number of the contributors that were MMO players only that were planning on ebaying theirs. But, they most likely won't be available to backers for over a year from now. I don't expect them to be available to non backers until a few months after that

That was what i thought as well. Sometime in 2014 we will find out.
