They're moving about, but have total cover, so you can't see them at the moment. Their positions on the map is where they were last seen.

In that case I can't reach anything...so double move again. At least I can give a flank this way.

Unable to find anything to sink her pick into, Ghorza was once again forced to reposition herself.

I thought I had to move in order to avoid an AoO. I'll have Celi stay put outside the grease then.

"I'm sorry! I've only been practicing with the crossbow for a couple weeks!" Celi learned how to use a crossbow when she was much younger, but she hadn't bothered to keep up with it until recently. She can't think of anything else to do, though, so she reloads and shoots at the creature fighting Rose.

Round 4 Wrap-Up

Adolina rushes to help Rose, thrusting easily into the tiny monster's side, though it is able to twist just enough that she misses its vulnerable stomach, and her rapier fails to pierce as well as she'd like. Still, the force is enough to send it swirling through the air for a moment.

Ghorza leaps to their aid as quickly as her legs will take her, but can't quite get a swing in before Celi's bolt goes high overhead, sparking off the distant wall - as she pulls her shot up because of the intervening bodies. She'd have actually hit had it not had soft cover from you folks, amusingly.

Rose dismisses the urge to go after her rapier, and instead thrusts accurately at the creature's throat with her dagger. It dodges just enough to catch the blade with its arm, but that's still too much for the now-badly injured monster, which topples to the ground.

One of the two hidden creatures lined in black emerges from the wall, flying towards Celi and screeching something in its strange language. With her hands on her crossbow, the gnome wizard isn't ready to strike at it as it flies far too close for comfort and chomps at her with oversized snaggle-teeth. Fortunately, the gnome is quick enough to dodge out of the way of the gnashing (if puny) maw.
Black-Lined Bite vs. Celi: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

The other lined in orange bursts out of the far western wall and coughs, vomiting up a surge of bile at Ghorza. Though the dwarf isn't quick enough to dodge out of the way, she manages to fight of the sheer visceral disgust that comes from being covered (again!) in vile fluids.
Orange-Lined Touch vs. Ghorza: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Ghorza Fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Rexus attempts a careful step north, towards Celi, then grimaces. "Hold on, Miss Wordsmith!" With that, he takes a few careful thrusts at the creature. However, rather than trying to attack it directly, he seems to be ushering it away from her.
Acrobatics vs. DC 10: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Aid Another: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 Celi gets +2 AC vs. the black-lined creature's next attack, if it survives that long.

Round 5 Midpoint

Black-lined is on top of Celi - it's in her space.

Ghorza rushes the vile creature that spat its bile at her, swinging down with a brutal strike on the thing. Though her pick doesn't quite pierce the creature as well as she feels it should, she still tears it out of the air and sends it splatting to the ground helplessly.

Adolina rushes around the slick floors left behind by the grease, getting close to the gnome's attacker. As she does so, Celi retreats away from it, not giving it the chance to attack her, but her bolt again goes wide as she fires at the tiny critter.

Rose, seeing as orange-lined is down takes the chance to get a little closer to the final creature, then hurls her dagger expertly at it. The attack hits it square in the back of the head... only to clatter uselessly to the ground.

The sole remaining creature looks around, its expression comically alarmed, and tries to make good an escape from both Rexus and Adolina. The nobleman is first to land the blow, stabbing it in the back, and as it attempts to get into the wall, Adolina stabs it again, sending it twisting through the air before it scrambles desperately into the wall.

After as long as it takes for the group to realize the creature isn't returning, Rexus speaks up. "Well," he says, breathing heavily, "that was unexpected." An extreme understatement. "I have no idea what those things were, nor why they were here... but if this is the sort of thing that have come to occupy this place, no wonder people think it's haunted."

Let me know who's searching the room, if anyone, and how.

With the fighting over, Ghorza held up a hand and stumbled over to a corner. There, she fought the urge to empty the contents of her stomach, the smell and texture of the goo that covered her being almost too much to handle. Barely keeping control of the urge to vomit, she took a deep breath to calm herself.

”Does anyone have any magic to clean this shyt off?” She asked, looking hopefully at her companions.

"Unfortunately, magic is not my forte," Rose replies as she picks up her dagger and returns it to its sheath.

Turning to Adolina, she gives a slight bow. "You displayed most excellent form, My Lady," she offers. "Whoever trained you is obviously a master and you were quite a receptive student."

Her praise delivered, the vigilante returns to where her own rapier still rests on the ground and carefully retrieves it, paying mind to any remaining magic upon the blade.

Taking an additional moment to study the room that they're in, Rose speaks up again, "Shall we see what lies behind us here? Or shall we descend the stairs to whatever threats await us below?"

To the west or down the stairs?

"Sorry." Adolina replies, shaking her head briefly and not meeting Ghorza's eyes. Not being able to help makes her want to turn away and avoid the awkwardness, which simply puts her face to face with Rose and her... compliments.

"I... umm..." But thankfully the vigilante turns away and Adolina gets a moment to breathe and let the adrenaline rushing through her chest dissipate somewhat.

Once that's done she sets to work on a thorough investigation of the room, since she has suffered no injury.

Rexus coughs, sheathing his sword into its cane. "Of course, my apologies Miss Thursisdottir." He steps forward, chanting a quick spell, and the foul substances dissipate off of her.

Spellcraft DC 15:
That's prestidigitation, alright.

The nobleman looks to Rose. "I'd imagine that whatever lies below is where we'll find the legacy of the Silver Ravens my mother urged us to seek out." He looks towards the western wall. "If it leads further towards the west, I suggest we turn back, but checking won't hurt."

Fortunately for Rexus, the decision is rendered moot - the small area behind the greater wall is... just another wall. [b]"Well, that's a relief.

Adolina's first, brief search reveals that among the foul-smelling nest of blankets and pillows, there's a significant haul of coins and other shiny bits. Aside from the coinage that's 12 gp, 185 sp, 342 cp, there are a pair of quartz earrings, and a set of nine silver buttons - probably from a coat.

Celi:
Those buttons look like they'd be worth a fair bit more than their weight in silver. Say five gold per button?

Ghorza:
The earrings are nice enough to be worth about 20 gold pieces for the pair... though her aunt would probably be able to negotiate for more than that.

Appraise Rolls:

Generally, I'm going to assume you scan for magic after the end of a fight, but in this case - it being fairly early on in your adventuring careers, I'll let you all decide whether or not you do so.

"Hm, permit me to try, Adolina..." Rexus casts his own spell, studying the item with a frown, then shakes his head. "I'm afraid I'm a bit at a loss, myself."

Celi, however, has more luck, and she's able to figure out that it's enchanted to help keep one resistant to outside forces. It's a cloak of resistance +1. You probably want to clean it off before wearing it, though.

After thanking Rexus for his assistance (that alone endeared him to her immensely), she picked up the earrings and whistled. ”Look at these.” She said, her previous anger forgotten. ”Worth at least twenty crowns. I know someone who could get more for it, but probably not worth her cut.” She mused. Seeing that a magical cloak was found as well, she smiled. ”This is turning out to be quite profitable.”

This is the first time that I’ve seen appraise be used. Moving forward, is it a skill that will be worth taking?

Encounter Maps | Dramatis Personae | Kintargo Gazeteer | Loot List

In the short term, sure. You'll probably be able to outsource it to your allies once you've managed to wrangle some, though that would also probably come with an expectation of donating some of the profits to the Ravens' organization.

Rexus rubs his chin as he gazes at the gate that bars the way downwards. "I don't suppose the key we found upstairs is able to open that?" He suggests, likely recalling that no one has any experience in unlocking such devices.

Ghorza:
For a moment, the smith hears something in the distance - a strange, haunting song, as though played on panpipes. Is this what Rose had heard earlier- and it's gone before she can get a stronger sense of where it's coming from. Definitely sounds like it came from beyond the gate, though.

I'm going to let you folks decide how quickly you want to move forwards. If you're going to try the key, read the spoiler below. Otherwise, you can keep chatting.

Unlocking the Gate:
It takes significantly longer than it should, but eventually the rusty lock clicks open, and the gate swings open. This close to the stairs, it somehow reeks even worse than the rat's nest and the foul piles that the creatures earlier claimed.

"Ugh." Rexus rubs his nose ferociously, trying to ignore the potent stench. "Gods, I can smell that even with my nose partially blocked. I've never wished that I got more congested before..." He chuckles dryly. "If this is what it's like bringing a rebellion about, then I'll have to get used to it."

”Anyone else hear that?” Ghorza asked, her voice wary. ”Beyond the gates. A song…haunting…” Knowing that they had to advance, she moved forward to unlock the gate. It took far longer than expected to get it open, and when she did the *smell* hit them. Gagging she staggered away from it, her eyes watering.

All of the women see (in varying levels of dim light) that the stairs lead down to a pair of double-doors, both fully shut. Evidently, whatever those creatures were either didn't bother heading there, or didn't bother keeping them wedged open in the way they had the trapdoor.

The Ravens arrive at the door, which, unlike the gate above, is unlocked and easily opened. The corridor ahead curves slowly northwards, while a ten-foot gap opens up on the left side of the hallway. The reek is even worse, nearly intolerable, but still, the Ravens must press onwards.

Peeking into the vast, circular chamber proves to be, if not quite a mistake, at least deeply unpleasant. A vast pool which the non-humans see is roughly 50' in diameter of rancid brown slurry fills the center of the room, and chunks of plaster have fallen off of the walls and ceiling, leaving mounds of rubble on the floor.

Every inch of what little space remains on the walls are covered with crude drawings and sinister symbols, and greasy chains connect the walls to four stout pillars that rise from the muck.

Knowledge (history) DC 15:
This looks like architecture from some centuries ago, back before the city council decided to raise the street level to reduce flooding on Argos Isle. They capped the reservoir and turned many of the old streets into sewers and the first floors of buildings into basements. This was probably a fountain, once, beautiful and clean. Now, however, all that is left is a polluted cesspool.

Knowledge (planes) or Knowledge (arcana) DC 15:
The runes and carvings on the wall look hauntingly familiar. It takes a moment, but then the woman identifies them. Those are definitely an attempt to open a portal to Hell - probably using the pool as a focus. It might actually have worked, once - if only briefly. Now, however, some of the key symbols are missing, and if she had to guess, there isn't any magic left in the runes.

More importantly, two hideously deformed piles of flesh lurch about in the filthy waters. The benefits of living in Cheliax are few, but in this case they are present - those are lemures, the least of devilkind!

Knowledge (planes) DC 11 - Lemures:
Lemures, as all Chelaxian citizens are aware, are the least of devils, used for materials in Hell and as the second most basic diabolic summons. As with most devils, they are resistant to non-silver weapons, but in their case, weapons aligned to the celestial planes also affect them normally. They are entirely mindless, and only barely capable of obedience to a summoner or greater devils. They cannot be burned by fire or poisoned, and it is difficult to freeze them or burn them with acid. Other than those factors, they are fairly straightforward as combatants go - they wield no innate magics, nor do they have any unusual abilities.

Noticing both the light and (perhaps) Ghorza's footsteps, they turn to look at the Ravens, dumb malice in their gazes.

Initiative:

Adolina: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Ghorza: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Celi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Rose: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Rexus: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Lemures: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Round 1

The devils slop slowly out of the muck, advancing towards the Ravens with surprising speed. The first to reach them lined in red doesn't seem to notice Rose, and instead lunges past her towards Ghorza. Although its unpleasantly solid claws tear at her, the dwarf's armor keeps her flesh safe from its desperate attacks.
Red-lined Claw vs. Ghorza, flat-footed: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

The second lined in yellow advances as well, moving forwards until it reaches the group, and - unlike its counterpart - does notice Rose's presence. This one slashes at her with its claws. Although she's caught slightly off-guard, Rose's own armor saves her from the shredding infernal claws.
Yellow-lined Claw vs. Rose, flat-footed: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Initiative order is lemures, Rose, Adolina, Celi, Ghorza, Rexus. I've swapped Rose & the lemures so that we don't have to wait on me between Rose and the rest of the group. Everyone is up.

Round 1 Wrap-Up

Rose circles swiftly around the devils, dancing between them to launch a pair of swift strikes on the one threatening Ghorza. Though she is unskilled in fighting with a weapon in both hands, she (perhaps surprisingly) manages to land both attacks. Her rapier sinks only slightly into the slimy devil's surface, but the knife she received the day before from Rexus rips through the fiend with precise ease - though she doesn't quite get its eye, it's near enough that the creature flails and shrieks.

Ghorza swings her pick in a single mighty blow, piercing the creature's head (such as it is) and setting it splattering across the ground. Although it (probably) isn't dead yet, it's definitely in no state to fight back any more.

Adolina takes the initiative to defend Rexus, stepping up to stab at the remaining lemure. Despite the fact that she's fighting it around a corner and thus it has partial cover her training pulls through, and she lands a swift gash across its shoulder. Of course, it's far shallower than it should have been - another manifestation of the devils' resistance to normal weapons.

Celi fires her crossbow at the devil, but thanks to its position and the fact that it's currently far too close to her comrades, the bolt deflects off the nearby wall.

"Wait, what else is here?" Rexus asks plaintively, then reaches out and lays a hand on Adolina's back. The noblewoman feels a swelling of certainty, a feeling of destined triumph. Touch of Destiny +1 again.

Round 2

Perhaps a smarter creature would retreat, or at least attempt to move tactically. However, the lemure is not nearly intelligent enough to realize it's in danger, and turns to claw at the closest of the women - Rose - with a savage ferocity. The half-elf isn't quick enough to defend herself against this new threat, and it rips through her armor and flesh. Hot blood flows out of wounds across her torso and legs, but Rose only feels it distantly, as pain whirls up to consume her, stars dancing before her eyes.

Round 2 Wrap-Up

Ghorza swings her mighty pick at the devil, but slips on the remnants of its companion, which brings the weapon wide. It sparks off of the floor, ringing pleasantly.

Adolina rushes out of the way of the lemure, giving it the chance to strike at her as she leaves - although it does so, the blow catches only air, leaving her able to heal Rose, whose injuries fade away with the noblewoman's soothing touch.
Lemure AoO vs. Adolina: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Celi, now with a clearer shot at the lemure, fires her crossbow once more. This time, though, the wall gets just enough in the way that the deflects off of it and clatters to the floor.

Rose, now at least somewhat less hurt, strikes wide with her rapier and showing the air above the devil's head exactly what she thinks of it.

Rexus takes a careful step into the hallway, drawing his sword cane as he does so. "What the-? A devil, here?" Though he sounds incredibly worried, the man doesn't let it distract him from the task at hand, and he stabs with surprising speed and skill at the lemure, trying to distract it to help keep Rose from being hurt.
Rexus Aid Rose: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 Just barely. Rose gains +2 AC vs. the lemure's next attack.

Round 3 Wrap-Up

Ghorza sidesteps, swinging another unfortunately ineffective attack at the devil, who doesn't seem to register her as a threat.

Rose takes advantage of this circling to flank the lemure with the smith. She continues her impromptu display of dual-wielding, thrusting her rapier over the fiend's head (and demonstrating her continued dislike of the air there), but her dagger manages to slip a slash in that slices a chunk off of the devil's flesh. It wails wordlessly, shuddering.

Celi's crossbow bolt flies wide as she has to avoid hitting Ghorza. It sails off into the dark of the circular chamber, and there's a brief plop as it falls into the foul liquid in the central basin.

Rexus steps in between the two non-human women, touching Ghorza's shoulder. "We won't fall here, friends!" He declares firmly, and the dwarf quickly grows certain of its truth. "Now, we just need to slay this thing and recover what we came here for."

Ghorza has touch of destiny +1.

Round 4

Mindless though it is, the lemure's primitive instincts do register that it's being very threatened by the fact that it is surrounded. It shuffles back, retreating from Ghorza, and then unleashes its full fury on Rose once more. Although she's able to deflect the first attack - just barely - the second manages to carve a chunk from her side, sending a jolt of pain through her again.

Feeling the touch of destiny upon her, Ghorza squared herself and solidified her grip on her weapon. There was no battle cry upon her lips, nor did she deign to say anything to the outsider. Rather, she merely glared at it with eyes full of determination, as she swung her pick around and into its' side. The weapon went in one side and out the other, only to send the devil flying away, such was the force of the blow. It landed hard, and did not rise.

Rose gives Ghorza a nod, the mask on her face concealing her grimace of pain.

"Thank you so much, Miss Thursisdottir," she says with a slight bow. "If you'll pardon me for a moment ..." She turns away from the group. Lifting her mask just enough she downs a potion she pulls from her small bag. The bitter taste betrayed the potion's age, but it provided some relief at least.

Potion of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Readjusting her mask she turns back to the others. "So ... Shall we see what was so important as to summon a couple of devils to protect?" she asks.
