For all of those new to Mutants and Masterminds, feel free to ask for help with builds.

It is an easy system to play, but character creation can be challenging. Several of us in this thread are old pals in the system who would love to bring new people in.

I would love to try and have my hand at a simple heroine with Jumping as her main power and the rest her gadgetry of special Juggling balls as a daughter of gadget based supervillians in the circus of crime.

Or Blue Beetle/Ant Man mash up would be interesting too.

I am not familiar with M&M 3rd edition but played 1st. So making a character is a bit taxing. Still I think my preliminary backstory will be interesting along side going into more detail as I figured the Circus of Crime would tie in with Bat Man's lore as well as Oliver Queen.

Well, I'm going to be a former circus performer who joined the Bat-family. There's lots of ways that we could have linked backstories. just spitballing ideas:

Your family could have killed my family. I was adopted by the Flying Graysons, and then adopted by Batman after they died.

Or your family was working with the same circus as the Flying Graysons. They turned to crime to get revenge for the massacre at the circus.

The Circus of Crime was fighting the Batfamily and we ended up separated from the others. This is when something worse came along and we had to team up to deal with the greater threat. This could have led to a friendship or even star-crossed romance.

Okay, I've wrangled a version of Nightwing here.

Description:

When not using his image inducer, Nightwing is a figure in black armor with a blue V across the chest. While it covers all of his skin, you can see that his proportions are off and he has a tail. His hands and feet have three long agile digits. A tactical harness is designed for quick access to a number of devices. Wrapped over his shoulder is a weighted chain that is his signature weapon.

Only the rare people that he trusts get to see Kurt Grayson outside of the armor, and then only is a secure location. Without the suit, his odd proportions are more obvious. He has dark blue fur all over his body, yellow eyes, and small fangs. He's usually smiling and joking around when he's in such a safe space. Still, signs of danger cause him to react quickly. A common trait among people connected to the Bat.

History (subject to change):

Kurt doesn't know about his parents. As a newborn he was found abandoned at the circus. Being blue and having a tail explained the abandonment, but circus folk tended to make a place for outsiders. John and Mary Grayson took in the baby and named him Kurt. He was about the same age as their son Dick. It wasn't ever a formal adoption, as he was never registered.

Kurt grew up very talented and joined the act once he was old enough. He wore a full suit, skin-colored mask, and hid his tail in the act. He still looked a little odd, but up in the air it was hard to tell why. Kurt accepted this as that was all he knew. But hard times were ahead as the circus went into debt. Eventually the mobsters took their revenge with a massacre of the circus folk and customers. Kurt learned to teleport when the bomb went off. He tried to hide, but as Batman was looking for evidence, he was found. Until he teleported away. It took a while for Batman to calm Kurt down and explain what happened.

Bruce knew what it was like to be an orphan of violence. And he knew that a mutant wouldn't do well in an orphanage, so he invited Kurt home. Bruce kept this secret because Kurt didn't want attention. But Kurt wanted to learn to fight crime. So later, Kurt became Raven, sidekick to Batman. He grew up as a vigilante. Batman trained him to use his powers and how to deal without any powers.

But eventually people need space. Kurt struck out on his own to work independently.

Is there an in universe explanation as to why there is no magic, supernaturals, returning from the dead, etc?

Also, I noticed in the timeline that you only mention DC cities. Is that the official setting? Are the cities from Marvel/the real world not in use, or are they just far less important?

So Mariner is a hybrid of Storm and Aquaman without the fish-talking from a power set point of view.

Then I was thinking that Atlantis could be an underwater refuge of mutants. Instead of Morlocks in the sewers, these recluse mutants would be called Atlanteans. Storm has that relationship with the Morlocks, and Aquaman obviously has the connection with Atlantis.

Need to understand what their relationship is with Sinister. He’s either the sponsor, or it’s where his rejects of experiments escape to. Maybe Tony Stark is a sponsor allowing him to isolate the mutant population and potentially study them. Just spitballing here.

Cheers

I can see tweaking it a bit for her to end up being apart of the Circus of Crime thanks to the whole massacre. Her parents Having used the circus as a staging ground to steal from others. This provoked the Mob that lead to Mob coming after the circus. Then they fled to another Circus of nothing but "super criminals" that is where Oddball 2 learned a variety of things from an eceltic group of criminals. Ring Master(White Rabbit/Penguin), Oddball(OddBall/ The Card Throwing Villain), Princess Python(Princess Python/Killer Croc), Eggspert(Egghead/Calculator)

Make her a good mix of gadgeteer with one simple power leaping
The rest her homemade suit and Juggling Balls

Critzible, give me some benchmarks and details and I'll see what I can do.

We are making Power Level 12 characters, which is usually pretty powerful.

How far can she leap? How fast is she? Superhuman or awesome human?

What do these balls do? Do they fly on their own? Cameras for remote viewing? Sticky webbing type stuff?

And what does her suit do other than provide protection? Senses? Wall crawling?

Is she a super acrobat? Can she tame reptiles?

All of these things and more are possible.

If you could give a sense of she is tough as Spiderman, dexterous as Nightwing, not a great hand to hand fighter, relies on ranged, that would help me dial her in.

Also, is she a gadgeteer in the sense that she can make things on the fly, or builds other gadgets?

Superhuman leaps think Marvel's Richocet style

I mean the balls should be mostly weapons, but I like the Mr.Terrific Angle a self propelled camera ect. Would be cool

The other more combat ones would be hard rubber strikers, A snare one, a shock/stun, maybe an explosive.

I'm working in acrobat and maybe some animal training.

She focuses on thrown weapons and her gadgets.

Suit would offer some basic protection, and wall crawling. She has had to pull her materials together to build the stuff. As well as trying to go to college in the big city to hopefully get a degree in engineering

My first take on Oddball 2:
This is a look at what you could do. It is currently 2 points over. I sort of mashed up some Hawkeye/Green Arrow builds with some high agility mutants. I went a little bit in the direction of being a support character, someone who makes their team better with assists and whatnot. That could easily be stripped out to shore up other weaknesses. Also, some skills are probably higher than needed and those points could be spread out.

So if we're doing combinations laced with homage to both franchises, I will create the speedster. Combining Northstar & Johnny Quick, he can be an energy controller who controls kinetic energy. The homage can be his name: Speed Force.

Crunch later, after I get it all into Hero Lab.

I'm still doing a lot of reading and research, but I am looking at blending The Hand and The League of Shadows/Assassins as part of my backstory. Probably going to include several other criminal groups, but twist them more towards vigilantism /anti heroism than actual evil.

Okay, this is awesome: I had come up with idea of fusing Ra's al Ghul and Apocalypse, only to just find out that Amalgam did the exact same thing.

Definitely going with the name Ra's al Nur, though this is *not* my PC. Rather he is part of my backstory.

Now back to more reading and research! I'm gettin hype AF for this character however.

Thinking off some sort of Jason Todd Bat-brat but since the Joker gets killed in Arkham instead of being killed by the Joker, Jason begins to develop mutant powers after the whole Legion/Pheonix situation. This leads to Sinister capturing Jason to experiment on him. Bit of a rough idea.

I'm gonna need some input from Reckless(and any others who want to help out) but this what I've got so far:

Ra's al Nur, is sort of the mutant counterpart to Vandal Savage. Maybe he helps manipulate 'mutant history' for his survival of the fittest vision. At some point, he becomes a rival to Sinister & Stark, as they are both opposed to mutants.

One of his daughters, Felicia al Nur(combining Black Cat and Talia al Ghul) marries not Bruce Wayne/Batman, but Remy LeBeau aka Gambit, who is the leader of the Thieves' Court(Court of Thieves?) a merging of the Thieves Guild Gambit grew up in, and the Court of Owls.

They have a child Damian LeBeau, which is my PC.

Some things I need some help with:

I want to also merge somebody with Gambit, but unsure who. I would like it to be some type of powered character who sort of fits into the above rough backstory.

I'm thinking the Hand of Shadows(Shadow's Hand?) is more akin to the version of the Hand when Daredevil was the leader during the Shadowland story arc. Aka, they are more of a force for good, but due to the other aspects I mentioned above, they are mostly used to combat Sinister/Stark/the Men of Steel and fight for mutant rights. However, they are still kinda 'dark' in alignment.

I also need help in actually building my PC. I'm kinda envisioning him to be a blend of Damian Wayne, Gambit, and Longshot(I think this might be his code name, just for funsies).

I'm thinking maybe some sort of acrobatic assassin base, with some luck based powers. Beyond that, unsure, exactly.

Any thoughts, feedback, critiques, suggestions, etc are most welcome!

TIA!

I could see it being a skill-based hero, like Batwoman. If you are looking at probability manipulation, most of the women are on the Marvel side (Scarlet Witch and Domino being the big ones). Jinx is the main one I know of on DC. Technically she is magical, but it could be flavored as mutant ability.

But I do want to ask something of you. If you do the accent, please either keep it under control or provide a translation in spoilers. I have nightmares about an online game where it took 20 minutes to figure out the dialogue from somebody who went overboard with a version of Gambit.

So...it's a protect Gotham game?

Seeing as how Reckless stated this is to be a global game, I think you're fine with not having any ties whatsoever to Gotham.

I haven't really figured out where my PC actually hails from or where they currently live. Part of the reason why I asked if the default setting is DC(Gotham, Metropolis, etc) or if the real world cities of Marvel are present as well...

Mine can Be more connected to speedster making her the daughter of the Trickster meets Oddball and the Circus of crime. Though the Circus of Crime is a classic villian team of Marvel like the Royal Flush gang

In the second, I'm considering running an M&M campaign for my next home game so I'd really like to get some experience with it. All my superhero experience is with older editions of Champions.

Classic Donald Blake style except in this version it's Donna Prince who taps her bracelets together to become the Power Princess. A woman who was ship wrecked and nearly died but was saved by The Amazon's. She lived there for years after World War One and then re-emerge with the bracelets that allowed her to walk and be an Amazon but now in the modern day. She though loses her ability to walk(the magic only working for a limited amount of time)

In Universe? Magic is phony sleight of hand BS. Vampires don't exist. Werewolves are fictional nonsense. The gods are just stories people told to explain natural phenomena, or maybe they were early mutants or visiting aliens or some such. But actual gods? Nah. Other dimensions? None that science has been able to penetrate. This universe has been completely isolated from the rest of the Multiverse should such a thing actually exist. Best people have been able to do is small pocket dimensions, and that has only been a mutant or inhuman creation.

Cities: In this setting, Metropolis was essentially a replacement Detroit. Gotham is a replacement NY. Most other 'real life' cities will retain their normal name, with the exception of Seattle being "Emerald City" and Atlantic City being "Starling City".

Unfortunately, magic doesn't work at all. It could be something chemical that wear off after a time or something like that (maybe a rare herbal mixture that only grows on the island.)

I liked Oddball 2, by the way, but want you to play with something you'll be happy with.

I'm just going to repeat that the heroes you create do not need to be a mix of DC and Marvel, could be from either one separately or your own creation completely. But I understand the fun of mixing and matching origins and/or powers.

To be clear, I know that a guy with a time-ship would be game breaking. But I'm hoping to do a guy who uses "time" as power. Holds, slows, Do-Overs (e.g., Hero Points), plus future tech. No actual "Back to the Future" shenanigans.

M&M Experts:

What does it mean when a character has two figures for an ability? For instance, in the link above for characters made to PL10, Martian Manhunter has a Strength of 12/6 and The Vision has a Strength of 10/4.

EDIT: NM. I figured it out: Density.

Sometimes you will also see that notation for things like Enhanced Ability power (where the character has some Strength, for example, and then some super strength). The Enhanced Ability can be nullified by the nullify power, where the inherent strength (or any ability) can't.

Also you might see it for something like Growth or similar powers.

Okay. Here is my Hourman/The Vision mix-up. If the Hourman thing is confusing, it refers to the third Hourman, a robot from the 852nd century made by the time-traveling original Hourman. This version doesn't have The Vision's ability to walk through walls, but does have some interesting time-stopping abilities.

I hope I haven't tried to do to much with the time travel and robot themes, but here goes!

When Tony Stark wanted to create his "Shield Around the World", he began to build Project Ultron. Stark was a genius, but the project went very wrong.

Separately, the original Hourman (Rex Tyler) had been blacking out and traveling into the far future to the 852nd Century, where he built a super-advanced robot and downloaded his own consciousness into it, naming it Matt Tyler.

Back in the 21st Century an aging Rex Tyler was killed in Metropolis during the battle between Clark Kent and Phoenix. In the moment of Phoenix's death, the robot Matt Tyler was able to return in his timeship and engage in the battle, becoming fused with Ultron by the titanic energies released during the battle. This catastrophe both destroyed his timeship and prevented Matt Tyler from being present at Rex Tyler's death and thus many of Rex's memories remain vague.

Since the battle, Matt has carried on as a lonely superhero named The Vision. He hopes to live up to Hourman's legacy.

If you want help with the crunch here I'd love to see if I can toss together a base for you to go from!

Also, a resource I found that I think helps a lot if you want to learn the system for character generation but are newer to the system is...

Maybe cuz it's 5:30am and my brain isn't super functional atm, but that spreadsheet you linked appears to be view only.

Acquisitives

@Reckless: I have points allocated for a minion and/or sidekick. (I keep thinking of that bodyguard/secretary that Lex was always shown with in the cartoon.) Is it okay if I promise to have them fully stated out if selected? If I put all the polish on them that I'm thinking of but then I'm not picked that would just break my heart. ^_^

I used to think that people who made up descriptions and backstories for every little power on their character sheets were weird. I don't think that anymore.
This character is so speaking to me that I gave a name to what is in essence a 1-point alternate attack.

sniper rifle:

WHM-6R Warhammer gaussian sniper rifle. The true genius behind the Warhammer is not that it exists, it's the miniaturization that went into it's making. What used to take a battleship to carry has been made small enough to fit unnoticeably on a man-scale. The minimum barrel fires a 1-gram aluminum slug at near-light speeds, allowing for unerring accuracy on any target within a straight-line sight.

It is, cause that’s the master copy! You can make a copy of it using the file function then edit it for your character!
