Venture-Captain Bjersig Torrsen has set out the call for a group of Pathfinders to compete in a race known as the Balgirdtrek. Taking place in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, this race is an annual event that includes participants from both the Varki and Ulfen people of the region. Bjersig hopes that by having the PCs participate, they might not only bolster the Society's reputation in the Saga Lands, but also document this exciting event. Although the Society has the organizers' official permission, some of the Ulfen competitors in particular see the Pathfinders' participation as an intrusion on their time-honored pastime. The true challenge of this race is not monsters or villains, but the harsh nature of the grueling marathon itself.

The port city of Iceferry sits on the bank of the icy-cold Rimeflow River in the Saga lands, a region known as the Land of the Linnorm Kings. You’ve been visiting the Pathfinder Society’s regional base of operations, the Iceferry Lodge, on your own business. Iceferry Lodge is no simple outpost for adventurers and archaeologists: Venture-Captain Bjersig Torrsen has assembled one of the foremost libraries in all the Saga Lands — it contains a written collection of Varki and Erutaki lore is second to none, and the lodge’s staff includes some of the Inner Sea region’s preeminent specialists on creatures and hazards of the Crown of the World.

The morning air chill enough to see your breath, the windows are rimed in frost, and a layer of deathly cold fog covers the berg-encrusted river. The locals consider the weather “mild.”

You're gathering at the Iceferry Lodge at the behest of Venture-Captain Bjersig Torrsen… you've heard rumors there's some big overland race coming up, and you can't help but wonder if that's your next assignment. There are racks of snowshoes, skis, and poles leaning against the lodge's outer wall; sled dogs bark in the distance.

You notice some other Pathfinders going the same way you are. Perhaps these are your teammates — best to introduce yourself! Art of the lodge's exterior on slide 1.

______

Now is the time for character intros! You are standing just outside the lodge. If you need a prompt, how do you feel about the cold? What is your PC doing this far North — perhaps they're interested in the scholarship offered here, or the frontier adventure.

You can buy whatever you need in town after the briefing, so don’t worry about that right now. Let's just get to know one another before the mission briefing.

Tumarea shivers and wraps his wings more tightly around himself. He wonders, not for the first time, at the strange series of events that led from Devil's Perch to the frozen north.

By the sun, it's cold! Still, I suppose every mile away from Cheliax is a good one. Anyway, I suppose I'd better go introduce myself...

"Greetings" the lithe, winged man calls out, his breath steaming as he strides briskly over. He walks holding a long staff, and wears no armor. His movements are quick and deliberate. "They seem to be assembling a number of us. My name is Tumarea. I'm fairly new to the Society myself. Some agents liberated me a while back from a Chelaxian circus, and joining up seemed like the quickest way to put some miles between myself and that miserable place."

Tumarea is a strix monk with the Staff Acrobat dedication (via a chronicle boon).

Estelia wraps her veil around her head as tightly as she can, shivering slightly in the cold air, but holding herself still positive. Her vibrant, multicolored scarf stands out against the mostly white frozen land. While she carries only a small knife as a weapon, her belt seems to be full of various baubles, including what appears to be several packets to hold decks of cards.

She breathes out a puff in the freezing air and tries her best to smile. "I am Estelia. I am a fortune teller in my native Varisia. I am quite skilled at my craft, and trained for years learning how to read Harrow, the stars, crystal balls, and whatever other unique methods people have used to divine. I have joined the pathfinders because I know that whatever destiny I am looking for, for myself lies elsewhere in this world, so I'm traveling with this Society to see where I might share my services while I search for my place."

By the step leading up into a carriage stood a young sailor, resplendent in uniform, conversing with a small lean woman, muffled up to the ears, of whom nothing was visible but a frost-tipped nose and the two points of her button ears. “You have saved us, ma chère,” said the sailor emotionally, his great white moustache trembling as he spoke. “You have averted much bloodshed! How can I thank you for —”

For once, Darlington thought to herself, she would love to take passage on a vessel and enjoy her downtime without another conspiracy of murder playing out before her. The passengers would have simply gotten away with it, had they not had the misfortune of the Dandy Detective pulling some favours to book passage up north at the last minute. Alas, solving another mystery served to stimulate her little grey cells on the voyage.

The Dutchess excuses herself then approaches the assembled group. Daisy politely nods to each of you individually. She manages a polite "Bonjour" through her scarf, then allows a shiver as gracefully as she can manage. “Perhaps this Venture-Captain Bjersig Torrsen would be kind enough to put on a pot of tea for us —”, then turning to the ranger to second his suggestion, “inside.”

“Weather not cold at all. Very mild,” she says as shakes her head, one of the scarves flapping about as she does so. “You can call me Gri. Not my full name, that’s a secret, but it's a good enough name. I am a Frostfur goblin and we’ve had many colder days, even in the current season.”

She takes a moment to appraise the rest of the group, and that, despite her reassurance, they still look cold. ”Fine. Inside.” She nods after speaking and trudges off in the direction of the lodge’s entrance.

You step inside at the Frostfur goblin's behest. Inside there's a cozy fire and books stacked around. Venture Captain Bjersig Torrsen, his friendly dog Mahki, and the gnomish Pathfinder Lirall are sitting at a table nearby. Art on slide 2.

Lirall is an enthusiastic-looking gnome with ink-stained hands wearing numerous furs and brightly colored scarves. Bjersig is a self-assured half-orc, dressed in a thick wool tunic, hide pants and furred boots. He speaks occasionally but primarily signs, punctuating some words with particular expressions and hand gestures.

Bjersig gives you a smile and a salute. "Hello!" translates Lirall. Bjersig continues to sign. "Welcome! How are you enjoying Iceferry? Cold enough for you? Well, perhaps not for all of you! Bjersig smiles at Gri. "Here, sit by the fire." Mahki runs happily through your group, searching for pets and treats. Eventually, she settles in front of the hearth, ears still perked and tail wagging across the rug. The venture captain pours you hot tea just like Duchess Daisy Darlington hoped. And iced tea for Gri.

"It's good to see new agents coming out here. I think I've put together quite a good team for this mission. Estelia may have seen it in her harrow deck, but there's cold in your future too — you see, you've been called here to compete in a historic overland race known as the Balgirdtrek! I expect that you will find it an excellent test of your capabilities, and one not many Pathfinders will be able to boast of.”

After signing this last bit Bjersig unfurls a map across the table — it shows a route going across hundreds of miles of tundra from Kalsgard (across the river from Iceferry) to Icemark. Along the way there are flag markers. Map is on slide 1.

He adds some notes. “This handful of documents is all the information the Society has collected on the Balgirdtrek up to this point. I doubt it’s something you’ve heard of unless you’re from the area like Gri. It is an overland race some 200 miles long, from Frostgarten in Icemark to Kalsgard, just over the river. It is performed each year, honoring the deeds of Balgird Bluetongue when he slew a tarn linnorm centuries ago, but this year’s race promises to be quite unique.”

“As you may know, the Varki have been the source of quite the commotion among the Ulfen lately, largely in positive ways." The Varki are the first people of this land; in some ways analogous to the real-world Inuit.

"Their ranger, Nankou, slew a linnorm some time ago and has been officially recognized as a linnorm king. A new linnorm king is always newsworthy, but a Varki linnorm king is unprecedented. In recognition of Nankou and his diplomatic efforts between the Ulfen and Varki peoples, the officials have decided that the Balgirdtrek will be held in reverse this year. You see, the Varki have always bristled a bit at some of the ideas inherent in the Balgirdtrek. Ulfen have often discussed it as a race from the ‘savage wilderness’ back into the arms of civilization, not something that has promoted constructive relationships between the two. It’s good that the officials seem to have broadened their horizons.” Some art of Nankou and his bear companion T’kamo, who each gave an eye fighting their taiga linnorm. Now they have matching eyepatches! <3

Bjersig continues. “What’s more, there are two new teams joining the race this year. First, Nankou has hand-picked a group of Varki to compete. This is the first time Varki have competed in the race and from what I’ve heard, the Ulfen participants are excited to see what they bring to the competition."

Bjersig smiles broadly. "If you haven’t guessed by now, you all are the second new team. I’ve managed to secure your entry with the approval of the race officials. You can thank me later.”

He stands and places a sealed envelope and a small purse on the table. “There you’ll find your entry letter accompanied by my letter of introduction for you. The purse contains a few coins to help you purchase some gear. Once the race is over, the Society will also compensate you for your efforts. Expect a hefty bonus if you actually manage to win! There is a sleigh carrying the other teams to the starting area. It will stop here in Iceferry to pick you up in an hour, don’t be late. To be allowed to compete is a great honor, so please remember that you represent the best qualities of the Pathfinder Society at all times. Take notes, and learn whatever you can from the other teams. The Balgirdtrek is supposed to be a friendly competition after all. If you have any questions, make them quick, otherwise good luck to you all. I don’t expect you to win, but I hope you’ll at least make a good show of it.”

Darlington maintains her posture as she sips her tea and internally laments the idea of leaving the warmth of the Iceferry Lodge’s roaring fire that she has quickly become accustomed to. Let alone the posh bed in her first class cabin up here. As always, she finds it better to instead turn her focus onto the task at hand. An ounce of prevention and all that.

As it happens, I did serendipitously overhear a bit of gossip about one team in my passage up here.” She shares what she knows about the Two Houses team. She then looks up from the papers, raising an eye towards Bjersig, “Any particular dangers we should be aware of or local customs that we should be careful to adhere to?”

Bjersig forms his left hand into a fist with the thumb under his chin as he begins to sign his response to the Duchess. "Not odd at all. this is an opportunity for us to learn firsthand!"

"As to dangers: the weather will be the greatest foe you should face along the way. In winter, temperatures can change quickly, and storms are not infrequent occurrences. As a Frostfur Gri probably knows all about the cold."

"Aside from that, the trail should be clear of any dangerous wildlife. Be wary nonetheless. With the trail cut to accommodate the new route, there may be a few more animals on the trek than usual.”

Inside, two groups sit, anxious for the sleighs to get moving.

One team sits at the far end of the cart: An older Ulfen ranger and what looks to be his son and daughter, and an unwashed cleric who wears a thick greasy bear hide. They glower at you mumbling to one another about "outsiders."

The other team is composed of two couples, and they sit in the middle of the sleigh. They're dressed in fine clothes, almost like they're going on a vacation. Bluetongue's Brawlers:
This group seems rather friendly. This team is made up of four burly Ulfen: Jori (female human), Sigurd (male human), Sigrun (female human), and Baltus (male human).

It looks like their strategy sheer brute force, not because they lack any particular wit or cunning, but simply to see if their physiques can handle the punishment of the course.

The Varki team chosen by Nankou to compete. The team consists of twin hunters Marbin Slickhide (male human) and Ylva Tunnelwalker (female human), Runa Frostleaf (agender human), and Olin Tuskbinder (male half-orc).

They also seem friendly, well-prepared, and excited to be a part of the race.

They seem neutral towards you, and rile each other up with tall tales about exploits past.

Without Trace or Fail:
This is a group of three Ulfen rangers and their cleric companion.

The rangers are Ostog Oakfeller (male human), a powerfully built man in his early fifties, his adult son Hjeldr (male human), and his adopted daughter Signe (female human). The cleric, Gruen Storval (male human), wears a bear hide.

They don't seem to like you.

Wyrding Wayfinders:
The aging but well-known champion, Faergim Axebinder (female human) wears the iconography of Cayden Cailean. She has arrived at the Balgirdtrek with her two squires. The squires, Thosse (female halfling) and Rikkun (human male), are also accompanied by the bard Sassa Ringbreaker (female human).

They seem indifferent to your presence.

Slide 2 updated with teams, attitudes, and mostly unofficial art.

______
You have three hours of downtime to gather supplies and interact with the other teams before reporting to the starting line for the beginning of the race.

What will you do for these three hours? Are you going to try and talk to a particular team? Shop for any particular supplies?

Estelia takes some time to collect herself, she's still not used to weather like this, but the early morning sky is a comforting presences as it always is.

Remembering that her fortune favored cooperation as the means of success she decides to make an effort to try and speak with another of the teams and garner some allies. As a collector of lore and culture she finds herself intrigued and steps up to Faergim Axebinder.

"I have yet to meet many heroes yet in my time, my career as a traveling adventurer is just beginning, so I am honored to meet you! May I ask about what it's like being a champion of such an important cultural tradition?"

Whether by their obvious physical prowess or by the sense of showmanship, Tumarea is drawn to the Bluetongue Brawlers. "You must be confident in your abilities to take such a direct approach to this challenge. Have you been in training long?"

Faergim is carrying a stack of crates to her sled; she won't let her squires or the bard help. Estelia can see the old woman is very muscular. "Oh, thank you for asking, dearie! Aren't you nice. I plan to do homage to the Accidental God by surmounting most of the trials myself. My squires here are still learning the ways, and the bard here is chronicling my adventures. So really, I'm attempting a solo Balgirdtrek."

"Why, a few years ago… was it '20 or '21? Well, that year I crossed the finish carrying Thosse under one arm and towing the Rikkun in the sled behind me. Won that year too." She stares at Estelia's vibrant scarf and deck of cards. "Young people just can't handle the cold anymore. Back in my day it snowed a lot more too. I wish it did nowadays, so the Balgirdtrek would be even harder than it is now."

"I'll sign your logbook if you like, dearie. Don't forget: wax your skis regularly on the course."

Jori is doing handstand pushups, Sigurd is doing squats with a big rock, Sigrun has a 3" thick shipping rope looped around a tree and is slapping the loose ends against the ground, and Baltus is doing deadlifts with two fully-load sleds — including passengers — hooked to either side of a pole.

Jori, upside down, pauses and gazes up at Tumarea. "Oh yeah, we've developed a whole routine — high intensity, low duration. If you are not feeling nauseated or ill by the end of your daily workout, then you are not living up to Bluetongue Brawler standards!"

"You look like you've had some training. Come on! Try one out! Just do a handstand and then 100 or so pushups, until you can barely see straight." If he's willing, the Brawlers teach Tumarea their daily tundra workout. It gets the blood flowing!

Daisy is grateful for the winter clothes Colin secured for her earlier.

She’ll watch her fellow agents to see if any of them go about requisitioning the suggested items on the list. If not, that will be her top priority. Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, afterall.

If that is being secured, she will instead approach the other team of “outsiders”, although they have much more of a right to be here than the Pathfinders, let alone a Shoony duchess from the south.

Bonjour, Fangs of the Remorhaz. I am Daisy Darlington, from the Pathfinder Society team, Just here for the Meatloaf. As I understand it, this is also your first race here as well, no? My colleagues are acquiring some last minute items, but you seem quite prepared already! I look forward to seeing you out there. Bonne chance.

If appropriate, Daisy will pursue a lead by studying one of the team members as they talk in case they/we get lost along the way. I will determine randomly by the order you listed the team members:
Randomly select a Fang of the Remorhaz: 1d4 ⇒ 3 Runa Frostleaf it is.

Regardless, Daisy will attempt to discreetly pick up their scents in case she has to rely on her Bloodhound Shoony ability later in the race.

Runa smiles at the Duchess. His pet baby polar bear sits on the ground munches on a chunk of seal fat. "We're excited to be here! It's history in the making, Duchess Daisy. We only hope to represent the Varki people well. Much like you, I am sure."

Daisy can see that her lead glances constantly at the other Ulfen (which are all the other teams but his and yours). He seems apprehensive about them. understandable, considering the cultural context of the region.

Runa looks over. "Say do you have any of this 'meatloaf'? I'm interested in trying out foreign food. We can trade some rations, if you like! I have seal liver, whale blubber, and crowberries."

Investigator stuff noted.

Pardon, Runa,” replied Darlington. “Pray forgive I do not have any loafs of meat on my person at this time. For that is why we race, you see? I have it on good authority that the ‘continental breakfast’ at the Linnorm’s Curse that we are all racing towards boasts having the most magnifique meatloaf in all the North!"

"This seal liver you offer sounds intriguing though, perhaps we can attempt to create a pâté de foie at camp? I shall see if any of these fine vendors can sell us some crackers.” The Duchess excuses herself to visit the wilderness vendors to acquire some thin bread and charcuterie.

Duchess has a difficult time finding charcuterie but does find bacon, ham, and sausage which can be sliced and placed on a platter with crackers. It will do, once you're in camp.

Tumarea gladly joins the Bluetongue Brawlers in a workout. As he falls to the ground exhausted after the 100th handstand pushup, he grins up at Jori, looming beside him with her hands on her head. "• You must complete the course within four days.
• Don’t injure your competitors.
• Don’t bypass any of the checkpoints.

"Each day of the race will consist of overland travel, and then an obstacle. traveling fast will help you win, as will completing obstacles. Do you have any questions?"

See Slide 3 for a handout on Race Logistics and mechanics. Every day, including today, you will be asked to make an Overland Travel check modified by the weather. You can sell me on an appropriate skill if you don't want to use the ones listed. At the end of the day, you will have a challenge to overcome and a scene with the other racers.

You can spend this last hour using diplomacy (or other skill if you have a feat) to make an impression on one team. The DC is 15 for most teams.

Those who posted RP with a team can make a check against those teams. Those who have not posted yet can choose a team and make the check.

”Just Here for the Meatloaf. Just Here for the Meatloaf! JUST HERE FOR THE MEATLOAF!” Gri shouts, getting a taste for how it feels to yell.

Seemingly satisfied after the third yell, she turns towards the sled to help finish packing and making sure the group has the recommended supplies - and then hears her teammates chattering with other teams.

She shrugs, if everyone else has time to scope out the competition, she can find time to chat.

She wanders over to the Two Houses, figuring that the team that won last year seems like a good place to start, and she tries to talk to Oluf, “Your talk about meatloaf at the finish line already gave us our team name, so any other obscure tips we should know?”
