Okay! Our Illustrious GM has approved the Broad Strokes background, so I'm sharing it with the rest of you all so you know what you're getting into.
I'm going to preface this by saying he's not blind, or at least won't be as soon as his eyes heal, which will likely happen just before you all meet him...
Born Hiro, he was a gifted son of the Dragon's Investigator family until some manner of training accident cost him his sight recently. It will never fully recover.
Concurrently, the Scorpion Clan had been in negotiations with the Dragon on an unrelated treaty matter & had petitioned as a sign of good will for a marriage between a Scorpion & a Dragon
According to old lore, the Kitsuki Daimyo at this time hates the Scorpion clan. Unfortunately for him, Togashi basically said 'Suck it up, there's reasons. This son of your House will still be serving my will in this.'
To which the Kitsuki daimyo effectively replied 'Fine, but I don't have to like it! What about Hiro, he's blind now so it's not like he can do anything anymore?' And Togashi just smiles enigmatically...
So the Scorpion find out too late to do anything about it that the guy they're getting is blind, but they are now also not happy, so they marry him off to some technically spinster, almost-ready-to-retire-to-an-abbey, Soshi; but the important thing is he is now subordinate to the Scorpion & will to the best of his ability sniff things out for them now.
Something about how he carried himself through all the b&+&~!#% involved gets back to the Hantei (on a good day) & impresses him enough that he both invites Hiro to Otosan Uchi & makes it known that he's a 'good boy' & nobody gets to f%!# with him, in a nutshell.

Monsters (oni) loose within the empire, rampaging enough to cause warnings to travelers, are a far bigger threat than a ronin violating honor.

Bandits and other people behaving badly are the most common opponents within the Empire's borders. Taint, Maho users, willing servants of Fu Leng are the normal opposition. Ghosts or other more private unexpected or unknown creatures are next. One of the Black Scrolls could be the fuel for a full campaign. Oni crossing into the Empire (across the Wall, requiring the Crab fail in their Duty) is HUGE. There is more itme spent attempting to accomplish tasks in the Shadowlands than there is dealing with Oni within the Empire.

I read your review. It was interesting. I did have to look up that the book was written 22 years ago. I would have added some information on how difficult or easy it would be to convert it to 4th or 5e.

It hasn't been established that she is a cultist in game yet. She might have a twin(?) sister who is part of the cult. What is known is that she's a Heimen (half-person), she isn't a dirty eta (non-person). The cult is definitely in the village, though, thanks for events that happened earlier.
I guess me as a player is not so familiar with blood cults. Miramuto if you want to put these people to the sword. I have no qualms about running these folks through.

The greatest non-oni villian in the setting was the original bloodspeaker, Iuchiban, if I remember correctly. This was why I wanted to go and find them immediately to prevent them from escaping.

I know this will come as a shock. But . . .
My cousin, Eric Gibbons (Soulcleave) has died. And I'll be going to his funeral (Celebration of Life). Since I was his best friend. I don't know the date of his viewing or his funeral, but it's sometime this week.
I won't be posting much during that day, or I might not at all that day. It's been a time of ups and downs. I'll get his RPG library, so that's a plus.
I am sorry to hear about it. I guess try to reminisce about the good times.

The funeral for my cousin Soulcleave was great. There weren't any flowers, but my mom had a tree planted. Also, a lot of people got up to speak about their memories of my cousin. I did too. There was a lunch, plus I got to take home a miniature -- and of course I got his big, red, fire breathing dragon.
